Chapter 109 The Slip Off
MYSTIC SHADOWS FORTRESS
Kyrian watched as Logan fussed over the documents on his table, mumbling incoherent words to himself. The moment Logan had arrived looking like a sour ball, Kyrian knew the day would only have to be saved by a miracle to not end up being disastrous.
“What exactly are you searching for?” He asked.
Logan hissed out loud as he facepalmed himself. “I forgot the document for the contract deal we are to have with the Arabian company at home.”
Kyrian stared at his wristwatch instinctively. They have less than an hour to get the meeting started and one thing about these new partners of theirs; they don’t take lateness or clumsiness lightly. Logan kept muttering profanities that weren’t so colorful to the ears. Kyrian was surprised at how clumsy he had become all of a sudden.
“What do you intend to do now?” Kyrian asked.
“I can’t have any of us go back home, knowing when they come around they would like to see the both of us on seat. So do me a favor, get the fastest amongst the drivers for me and ask him to drive to the Fortress house I would make a call.” Logan ordered.
Kyrian shook his head in acknowledgment before he stepped out of the office. Logan picked up his phone, trying his hardest to search for Jovy’s number. If she can get the document before the driver’s arrival, he would be able to make it back just in time before the meeting goes far. He couldn’t find any contact that had her name on it and his anger fueled at the realization. He threw the phone at the wall in anger almost meeting Kyrian’s face but he was quick to dodge it.
“What the hell man?!” Kyrian blurted.
“Where the hell is the driver?!” Logan asked, not bothering to apologize.
“He should be halfway to the Fortress house now.”
“Do you have Jovy’s contact with you?”
Amusement danced in Kyrian’s eyes. “Why exactly would a husband not have his wife’s contact?”
Logan cut him a vicious glare. “Will you mind your business and call the damn number?”
“Fine.” He tapped on this phone, dialed Jovy and put it on loudspeaker. Jovy picked on the first ring.
‘Jovy.’ Kyrian called out.
‘Beta Kyrian.’ Jovy’s excited voice erupted from the other line.
Logan felt irritated at the tune and he eyed Kyrian. He turned the phone towards himself. ‘Jovy…’
There was a long pause on the other line. ‘I know you can hear me, run upstairs to the study and get me a brown folder on the table. Do not open the folder and hand it over to the driver that would be coming home now. Mind you try your very best to keep those legs of yours running and don’t soil my documents if you still want to have a chance at breathing.’ Logan threatened before hanging up.
“How about you just sign up to become an assassin since you enjoy threatening people with death so much.” Kyrian snort in annoyance.
“I don’t want to have any altercation with you right now, Kyrian.” Logan said in a muffled tone. The both of them had only recently got talking again after a whole month of staying away from each other which was all because of Jovy.
“Do whatever it is you want. Shall we go through the files again?” Kyrian asked. Logan shook his head in agreement. The both of them sat down burying their nose in work.
Jovy didn’t know if she should feel relevant or happy that Logan for the first time in two months since the pregnancy incidence had just said some meaningful words to her. She couldn’t remember the last time she set her eyes on him despite living in the same space. Standing up in a hurry from the bed, she tried to put on something decent to cover up the underwear she had on. She had just pulled her jean on when a knock came on her door. It was one of the young maids in the Fortress house.
“Good morning, Luna. There is a driver at the foot of the stairs waiting for you.” The maid said, holding onto a mop.
“Alright, Diane. I would be right out. Are you about to clean the hall way?” Jovy asked.
“Yes, ma’am. And I intend to use one of the surface cleanser sir Arlo brought in days ago. It smells really nice.” Diane grinned.
“Alright. Be careful not to slip off while working.” Jovy smiled back at her as she stepped out of the room in a rush.
Jovy went towards the study, the brown folder was on the table just as Logan had described and she grabbed onto the file. Jovy exited the study and ran towards the stairs.
Diane who was standing by the side saw her coming, “Easy there, Luna. I just added the liquid to the fl-”
She didn’t get to finish her caution message as Jovy had moved a bit too fast and missed her footing over the slippery floor. She rolled down the stairs while still clutching the folder. Diane screamed loud which caused the driver to run towards a falling Jovy. Jovy had landed on the floor with blood oozing out of the side of her head.
“Somebody help!” Diane wailed loudly trying to call on the others to come around to help her out. She took out her phone to call the emergency line but the phone rang consistently without a response. The driver lifted Jovy with the intention of getting her to the hospital. He was confused. He didn’t know whether to take the file to the office first or drive to the hospital. Knowing how wild the Alpha can get when angry, he put an unconscious Jovy in the back seat with the help of the guards in the Fortress house. The driver’s phone beeped as he was about to start the car and he picked.
‘Why the hell are you not picking your calls? Where is my goddamn file?!’ Logan roared into the receiver.
The poor man stuttered on the phone. ‘I…I…am so sorry…I…have the file sir…but the Luna fell off the stairs. It is quite serious and she is unconscious.’
Logan let out a string of curse. ‘Do I look like I care about that? If you don’t get me my file and reach here in the next few minutes consider yourself a dead meat.’ He bellowed hanging up.
The driver was torn in between saving the Luna’s life and taking the blood stained folder to the Alpha. Every of the maids and guards standing out stared at him pitifully. They were just as handicapped as he was and none of them wants to be subjected to the wrath of the Alpha.
‘The drivers are not around…and we don’t have access to the other cars. How about you call, sir Arlo?’ Diane suggested.
The driver nodded in a hurry as he dialed the number Diane called out. Arlo wasn’t picking. “You know what I would take the risk and take her with me. If nothing is done she might die. I would call sir Arlo on the way and hope he meets me on the way back.” He said.
“Alright. Please be careful.”
He drove like a maniac out of the Fortress house while trying to keep an eye on Jovy whose blood was soaking into the car seat. He kept dialing Arlo and a sigh of relief escaped his lips when Arlo eventually picked.
‘Hello who is this?’ Arlo’s voice boomed from the other end of the line.
With a shaky voice the driver tried to talk while keeping an eye on the road. ‘Please sir, I need you to meet me by the mall. The Luna is terribly wounded and the Alpha has my movement timed. Please hurry, she might never be able to make it if anymore time is wasted.’ He rushed out his words at a goal.
Not waiting to hear more the line dropped. The driver felt relaxed that Arlo would show up. He checked his time and glanced at Jovy again. The elderly man pressed on the pedal hoping that he would be able to make it just in time to save her life.
**********************
Arlo couldn’t believe his ears when he received the call. He almost passed out when he met with the driver to find a bloody looking Jovy in his hands. Without waiting to ask any questions, he took Jovy from him, placed her in his car and drove wildly to the nearest hospital. Tears trailed his face as Arlo couldn’t stand seeing Jovy so helpless. She had been in the same helpless state two months ago and now he can only hope she survives the fall.
“We are trying our best to stabilize her but she needs a blood transfusion urgently.” A nurse said to him after he had been probed on what had gone wrong with her exactly.
Arlo stared dumbfounded for a second before calling himself back to order. “I am really sorry, you were saying something.”
The nurse gave a small smile. “I understand how you must be feeling at the moment but I need you to focus now. She needs a blood transfusion which means we would need a donor.”
He wiped at his face quickly. “I can be a blood donor. Where do I need to go?”
“Come with me.” She said.
The blood test went smoothly and luckily Arlo’s blood was just right for Jovy. Despite his weak state, Arlo couldn’t stay put in a place as it turned out she might be needing surgery due to the deep gash in the head. It worried Arlo considering her recent encounter with the operation room.
“Please sit, sir. You aren’t too fit to stress yourself please.” One of the nurses pleaded with him.
Taking a deep breath, Arlo searched his pocket for his phone only to realize he had left it in the car. His heart skipped at the thought that his uncle Kyrian or Alpha Logan would have been trying to reach him.
“Do I need to sign any paper right now?” He asked her.
“You don’t have to worry now sir. She is in the ICU at the moment and I can assure you that she is being looked after. You might need to change your cloth.” She said.
Arlo looked down at his bloodied T-shirt and immediately sense the smell of the blood stench. His eyes darted around the room. “Here have some water.” The kind nurse handed him a bottle.
Arlo nodded towards her in appreciation before he hastened his pace out of the hospital. Opening the car, he checked his phone only to find it dead. “Shit!” He cursed out in irritation.
Arlo pulled off his clothes and he threw it into the trash can few meters from him. Thankfully he had one of his shirts laying around in the car. Arlo checked his wrist watch, he calculated thirty minutes to get to Logan’s office and back to the hospital. Arlo kick started the car and he drove like a maniac through the busy road.
Kyrian rubbed at his forehead feeling exhaustion resting on the tip of his shoulder. The driver had returned just two minutes late and it would have been better if the file cover hadn’t been soiled in blood.
“You bloody bastard! What in the world were you thinking getting all of your blood on my file?” Logan yelled in anger. His eyes looked scary.
The driver cowered towards the door in fear with his wolf whimpering. “It is not my blood, Alpha. It’s that of the Luna. I told you she fell off the stairs while getting me the file.”
Kyrian stood upright at the news with his eyes darting towards the files again. “And you left her alone?” He blurted.
“He is smart enough to not play hero. I would have had you pulled off work right this minute.” Logan scoffed. “Get the hell out!” He bickered at the poor man.
Kyrian stared in shock as he tried to get his thoughts together. “Wait a minute Logan, did I just hear you talk about Jovy getting into an accident so casually?”
Logan glanced up at him with a blank face. “It is a mere domestic accident. That young girl is dramatic.”
“What the hell-”
The door opened cutting Kyrian short in the response he intended to give. A distort looking Arlo walked in while Kyrian ran towards his nephew.
“Where is Jovy?” He inquired.
Arlo sniffed. “She is being treated at the moment. She lost so much blood due to the gash in her head.”
A gasp escape Kyrian’s lips with his eyes darting towards Logan who looked unbothered. “Did you hear Arlo, Logan?”
Focusing on the file in front of him, Logan kissed his teeth. “We have an important meeting to attend Kyrian and for your own good it will be nice to drop all your emotions at the door and focus on getting this deal.” Packing up the files, he stood up and passed by the brothers. “Meet me in the conference room in three minutes.”
Arlo and Kyrian watched in horror as Logan walked out on them. Tears lingered at the back of Arlo’s eyes. There is no way in his right mind would he let Jovy stay back with Logan after she recovers.
“I am so sorry about this, Arlo.” Kyrian mumbled.
Arlo nodded slowly as he let out a dry chuckle. “And here I was thinking you both might be worried about how she might be doing. I should have known that would never happen!” He gritted his teeth.
Kyrian placed both of his hands on Arlo’s shoulder. “I promise to come around champ. Pardon me this one time.” He said.
After Kyrian left, a wave of loneliness consumed Arlo and he wondered how Jovy must be feeling. He had thought of calling Alice but knowing how crazy she can get, he decided to leave it all till after Jovy’s surgery. Running back out, he returned to his car and drove back to the hospital. Arlo was almost out of breath when he stood in front of the nurse while panting loudly.
“How is she?” He asked.
The nurse smiled gently at him. “It wasn’t much of surgery just major stitching but she is fine now and recuperating well. She is by the third room on your left and mind you, the doctor said to inform you that she would be spending some time here to fully recover.”
Arlo nodded weakly as he headed to the direction of the room. Standing by the door that had a transparent glass on it, he chose to watch her there and his heart skipped at the sight of Jovy looking lifeless on the bed. A tear drop escaped his eyes but he wiped them off.
Arlo made a silent promise to himself. Jovy was definitely leaving this miserable life behind the moment she wakes up.
