CH 54.
“Andrianne, are you okay?” Lucas asked weakly.
“I’m fine, but you’re hurt. Let me call an ambulance,” Andrianne said as she reached for her phone.
“No, don’t,” Lucas said, grabbing her hand. “We can’t involve the police. Remember what that caller said? We have to find a way to handle this on our own.”
Andrianne hesitated. She knew that Lucas was right. If they involved the police, they could risk losing Lucas forever. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.
“Okay, but we have to get you some medical attention. Let me get a first aid kit,” Andrianne said, getting up from the ground.
As she rummaged through the kit, she couldn’t help but feel guilty about what had just happened. She had just killed a man, even if it was in self-defense. She knew that she would have to live with that for the rest of her life.
When she turned back to Lucas, she saw that he had passed out. She panicked and tried to wake him up, but he didn’t respond. She felt for his pulse and breathed a sigh of relief when she felt it beating weakly. She knew that she had to get him to a hospital, but she couldn’t do it alone.
She looked around the room and saw that there was no one there to help her. She felt alone and scared, but she knew that she had to be strong for Lucas. She lifted him up in her arms and started to make her way out of the building.
Andrianne felt her heart racing as she drove Lucas to the hospital. Her mind was in a whirlwind of thoughts as she tried to come up with a plan on how to explain what had happened without implicating herself.
As they approached the checkpoint, she could feel her anxiety rising. She knew that her bloodstained clothes and Lucas’s injuries would make it difficult for her to convince the police of her innocence.
Suddenly, she heard Lucas’s weak voice beside her, “Tell them you’re my wife.”
Andrianne’s heart skipped a beat. She knew that Lucas was trying to protect her, but she couldn’t bear to lie to the police.
“Lucas, I can’t lie to them,” she said, her voice trembling.
But Lucas was insistent. “Please, Andrianne. It’s the only way they’ll let you take me to the hospital.”
Andrianne hesitated for a moment, but ultimately decided to follow Lucas’s advice. As they approached the checkpoint, she rolled down her window and tried to keep her voice steady as she spoke to the police.
“Officer, please let us through. I’m Lucas’s wife and he’s been injured. We need to get him to the hospital,” she said, her heart racing.
The police officer looked skeptical as he looked at Andrianne’s bloodstained clothes and Lucas’s injuries. “What happened here?” he asked, eyeing her suspiciously.
Andrianne felt a lump form in her throat. She knew that she had to come up with a convincing story, and fast.
“We were attacked by some men, and Lucas was badly beaten,” she said, hoping that her voice sounded convincing enough.
The officer looked at her for a few moments before finally nodding. “Alright, you can go through. But we’ll need to take your statement once you get to the hospital,” he said.
Andrianne felt a wave of relief wash over her as she drove through the checkpoint and towards the hospital. Lucas was still barely conscious beside her, and she could see that he was struggling to stay awake.
As they finally arrived at the hospital, Andrianne felt her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that they still had a long way to go before everything was sorted out, but for now, she just needed to focus on getting Lucas the help he needed.
She rushed him inside, and the medical staff immediately sprang into action, whisking him away to the emergency room. Andrianne stood outside, watching anxiously as they worked to save his life.
As she waited, she couldn’t help but think back on everything that had happened. From Steve’s obsession with her to Lucas’s kidnapping, it all felt like a nightmare that she couldn’t wake up from.
But despite everything, she knew that she had to be strong. For Lucas’s sake, and for her own. She took a deep breath and braced herself for the difficult road ahead.
