Jessica picked up Summer to go to the Golden Cauldron.
The moment Summer got into the car, she asked Jessica, “What happened? You look pale.”
Summer had less contact with Jessica but could see that she was an outgoing person. But now Jessica’s face had tensed up, looking anxious.
“I’m just a little anxious.” Jessica shook her head.
She thought for a while, then added. “I’ve got a very important thing to tell you. You’ve got to… Never mind. I will tell you later.”
Seeing her expression, Summer nodded and did not ask any further.
They both went into the Golden Cauldron. Jessica put the menu in front of Summer.
“Would you like to drink anything? Are you hungry?”
Summer felt she needed neither of them. But seeing the anxious look of Jessica, she ordered a cup of coffee.
“Have you recalled anything recently?” Jessica sounded her out.
“No.”
Summer’s expression dimmed. When she went for her follow-up medical checkup a few days ago, the doctor told her she was recovering well. But even the doctor could do nothing to help her remember anything. Without the memories of the past, she felt scared, as if she was suspended in the air, her life feeling surreal. Sometimes, she even questioned herself if she was still alive.
Jessica pressed her lips together and put her mobile phone in front of Summer. “Do you recognize this person?”
The screen showed the photo of a man who was none other than Leonardo.
“I know him. He is Leonardo.” Summer was struck dumb. “Why are you showing me his photo?”
Jessica ignored the last part of her sentence but was shocked. “You know him? Then why did you say you remember nothing?”
“He is the president of Emerson Corporation. Anyone who read the financial news should have known who he is, I guess?” Summer felt Jessica was much ado about nothing.
“That’s it?”
“Uh-huh…” Summer hesitated for a while, then continued. “He moved into the same apartment as mine yesterday. He has a daughter.”
“Your apartment?” Jessica felt as if she was a repeater. She was so shocked that she had to repeat every sentence that Summer said.
Seeing Jessica’s surprised look, she said, “And… he is staying in the unit right opposite mine.”
“Opposite what?”
Jessica ran her fingers through her hair in disbelief. What was going on? Did they both not lose their memories? She tried to collect herself.
“That means you two have met?”
“Uh-huh. They even came to my house and dined with us last night…” Summer thought of the scene last night and could not help shaking her head. She then told Jessica, “Please don’t tell others about it.”
“You saw his daughter? Isn’t she adorable?” Jessica swirled the glass of water in her hand to conceal her emotions.
“Yeah, she is super adorable.” Speaking of Rosie, Summer could not help but smile.
Jessica took a sip of the water as if she had made up her mind, her voice serious. “She is your daughter.”
Seconds had passed, and there was a strange silence at the dining table. Summer did not know how long it had been when she finally found her voice.
“Jessica… are you kidding me?” Summer recovered from her shock but did not believe what Jessica told her.
Jessica knew Summer would not believe her outright. Taking a deep breath, Jessica said again, “Nope. I’m serious.”
Summer looked at Jessica, whose expression told her it was not a prank. But still, it sounded ridiculous. Rosie was the daughter of Leonardo and his fiancée. How could Rosie be her daughter? She and Leonardo? For god’s sake, she had a fiancé, Stanley. Was Stanley lying to her?
“Rosie is my daughter?” Summer pressed her lips together and thought for a moment. “You mean Leonardo and I used to be…”
“A couple,” Jessica chimed in.
Summer accidentally hit the cup in front of her and spilled the brown coffee onto the Beige plaid tablecloth, leaving behind a streak of dark stain. After a while, Summer found her voice again.
“Although I don’t think you’re lying, this is too…”
Before she could finish her sentence, a high-pitch voice interrupted her.
“Summer?”
The voice was followed by the click-clack of high heels.
Jessica looked up and saw Vicky walking toward them. Vicky looked dead at Summer with deep-seated hatred in her eyes.
Jessica could not help but swear. “F*ck! What is she doing here?”
Summer looked back and saw a woman with heavy makeup and an aggressive manner coming in her direction.
When Vicky saw Summer’s face, she was wide-eyed. Her heavy makeup made her look even more hideous than she originally was.
“You are still alive? You are still alive?” Vicky came in front of her, reaching to grab Summer by the lapel, the antipathy in her seemingly leaking out of her eyes.
Summer could not remember who Vicky was. But an inborn sense of disdain told her she and this woman were not best buddies.
Jessica got to her feet and pushed Vicky away. “Vicky, what do you want?”
Not seeing it coming, and also because the force Jessica had used, Vicky fell straight to the floor. Despite that, her eyes still stared dead at Summer.
“Leonardo is not dead. And you, too, aren’t dead! Why didn’t you all die? Yet he has to die?”
Summer could not make head or tail of what she said but could feel the hatred Vicky had toward her.
Seeing Vicky made Jessica’s hackles rise. “Adams deserves it. No one owns him and you anything!”
Vicky did not give a hoot about Jessica, her viper-like eyes still staring at Summer.
“You all have to pay for it! None of you are going to go unpunished!”
Jessica came up and stood between Summer and Vicky. “Vicky, go see a doctor if you’re sick! Don’t be mad here!”
Just then, Vicky’s manager arrived at the scene.
“Vicky, what are you doing here?” The manager quickly held her up from the floor. “Aren’t you afraid of being photographed? It would ruin your image.”
“Let them do whatever they like. All they could do is badmouth me. Other than that, what else could they do to me?” Vicky got up and just did not give a damn.
The manager, who scrambled to sort Vicky’s clothes out, knew Jessica too and greeted her, “Ms. Patel.”
“Keep an eye on your artist.” Jessica broke into a half-smile.
The manager smiled back but said nothing, just quickly taking Vicky away. Before leaving, Vicky looked back at Summer with the same vicious look.
