The doctor wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and cautiously said, “She has a deep wound and been anesthetized.”
Leonardo’s expression had not eased up, still looking as if he would burst out anytime. “How long before she wakes up?”
“Depending on her body. Should be soon…” The doctor felt more cold sweat on his forehead.
“How soon is soon?” Leonardo was not happy with the doctor’s answer.
“It’s…” It scared the wits out of the doctor, who was afraid of getting rapped by this dark-face King of Hell in front of him.
Carl had just come in time. Seeing that Leonardo could be going violent at any time, he ran up to him. “How is Summer?”
“Still unconscious.” Leonardo’s voice sounded depressed.
Carl turned to ask the doctor. After the doctor explained the situation, he gave Leonardo an ill-humored look. “It is not life-threatening. Just that her wound is a little deep, and she has been anesthetized. You don’t have to threaten the doctor.”
Leonardo glanced at Carl as if he was assessing whether what Carl said was trustable. After two seconds, he leaned forward and pushed Summer to the ward.
“Let me give you a hand,” Carl came up and said.
But before his hands could get near, Leonardo flung his hands away. “Don’t touch.”
Carl pressed his lips together, indignant. “I just want to help…”
But Leonardo would not give him a hoot as he pushed Summer into a VIP ward. Later when Carl came in, he saw that Leonardo was carefully transferring Summer to the bed, his face so grave as if he was negotiating a multi-billion-dollar contract.
Other than the medical stuff, Carl had seen no one on his way here. So he asked, “Did you ask them to vacate the entire VIP floor?”
Leonardo put the blanket over Summer’s body, then turned to look at Carl, frowning. “Get out. You are too noisy.”
Carl could not find a word to respond. But Leonardo could not have cared about Carl’s reaction. He turned around again and sat down on the edge of the bed, waiting for Summer to wake up.
Carl did not leave, his voice a few octaves lower now. “Don’t put on that sorrowful look. Summer is just wounded, not life-threatening. You—”
Leonardo shot him a glance, and Carl mimed a zipping motion with his hand across his mouth. He stared at Leonardo for a few more seconds before leaving.
After a while, Carl came back in with a bag in his hand and a nurse behind him. He tossed the bag at Leonardo. “Get changed, then let the nurse attend to your wound.”
“No need.” Leonardo did not catch the bag, his entire world was all about Summer now.
“Do you want Summer to wake up and see you in this state?” Carl scanned Leonardo and shook his head. “Women are particular about appearance, and you are a mess now. You would be an eyesore to her when she wakes up later…”
Before Carl finished, Leonardo picked up the bag and turned to look at him. “I will get changed.”
“Go. I will look after Summer.” Carl never expected that it only took a few words to move him.
Leonardo glanced at him, then leaned forward to move the chair two meters back, away from the bed. Carl was wide-eyed. What would he do to Summer even if he were to sit beside the bed?
“Sit here.” Leonardo pointed at the chair.
Probably because of the side effect of long-term oppression by Leonardo, Carl instinctively obeyed his words and sat down as he was told. Only then Leonardo went into the washroom to get changed.
After Leonardo shut the door, Carl looked over at the nurse. “What do you think of him; is Leonardo sick?”
The nurse hesitated for a second, then spoke quietly. “He is handsome…”
Carl had no word for it.
Leonardo was only suffering from minor cuts and bruises. After he got changed, Carl had him sitting down on the chair as the nurse dressed his wounds. As soon as that was done, Summer was waking up.
Her face was as pale as snow, her voice so soft that she could only be heard at close range. Emerson
“Are you okay?”
“I’m okay.” Leonardo held her hand tightly, his voice hoarse.
Summer let out a smile, but probably because she was still too weak, her cat’s eyes that looked beautiful on normal days lacked the luster. She looked like a fragile doll that would fall at the touch of a hand.
Leonardo was trying to hold back his emotion, his eyes red as he gritted his teeth. “Summer, I will snap your leg if you dare to do this thing to hurt yourself again!”
She always thought Leonardo was a man of his word. But that was not entirely accurate. Because all the threats he made against her had never materialized. He was fierce as a lion when he was angry, but this lion had never used its claws against her.
Summer said nothing, just chuckling.
“Don’t laugh.” Leonardo ordered.
She could not help herself. But she still felt weak when she tried to speak. “Don’t get so worked up, I was just trying to… protect you…”
She might not be as smart, wealthy, and powerful as he was—she even looked vulnerable in front of him, but she still wanted to do something for him. While Leonardo had his unique way of loving her, she insisted on having her own way.
Leonardo looked at her silently. After a long while, he said, “Protect me by protecting yourself. I’ve told you before; don’t turn a deaf ear to what I say.”
Summer thought of what Leonardo had said before: “I will be fine as long as you are fine. If something were to happen to you, it will be as good as killing me.” But she could not sit by and watch while Adams threatened him. She could bring herself to think of her own safety only. Especially when those whom Leonardo had once held close to his heart had all betrayed him. It ached her heart every time she thought of that. So she wanted to show him more care and love. A lot of things came to mind, but she still nodded her head at last.
“Where is Adams?” she asked.
Just then, Carl came in and answered that question on behalf of Leonardo. “He got away.”
The situation at the time was chaotic. Leonardo was too occupied with Summer’s condition and could not spare his time to deal with Adams.
