Leonardo stared at Summer, his face looking like frozen water. “You’re blaming me?”
She indeed blamed him earlier because he had been so late. But after he explained, she had forgiven him. The only thing that pricked her was his tone of voice.
“No.” Summer did not want to talk any further. She got out of bed, carried her clothes, and entered the bathroom.
Earlier, Leonardo made it sound as if she liked to be a trending topic with Adams. She was just kidding when she said she may as well make a debut on stage if the same thing kept happening.
Summer was not feeling too happy about him. After cleaning herself up and putting on her clothes, she went straight downstairs without talking to him. Breakfast was a silent affair too. Later, they left for work separately.
The moment Summer arrived at Tip Top Entertainment, she saw Jessica.
Jessica walked her aside and asked, “You and Adams were dining together?”
Jessica must have seen the trending topic since she asked the question. Summer nodded, a little out of spirits. “Leonardo, Adams, and I were supposed to have dinner together. Leonardo was at the office, and I went there early,” she briefly explained to Jessica what happened the night before.
Jessica grabbed her hair, not bothered with how she may have looked. “But how could Adams be so careless? This is not the first time he’s been photographed…”
After spending ten years in the entertainment industry, Adams was supposed to be very vigilant of paparazzi. Yet, he was getting photographed multiple times, not to mention the photos were clear and sharp. The more she thought about it, the weirder she felt.
She and Jessica talked as they walked toward the elevator. As the elevator doors opened, Adams and his manager, Sophie stepped out. Seeing that there were no outsiders around, Adams greeted Summer with a smile.
Summer just acknowledged with an “Mm” that sounded distant. She glanced at him, her emotions complicated.
Adams could feel it, but he said nothing.
Just as Adams turned and left, she suddenly called him out, “Adams, did you see anyone secretly photographing us in the Golden Cauldron last night?”
His back was facing her, and he did not look back, apparently startled by her question.
Sophie, who was walking beside him, glanced back at her, also looking surprised.
It took Adams two seconds before he looked back and appeared apologetic. “I’m sorry. I was too careless, but I’ll fix the problem.”
His voice and smile were still gentle, but Summer frowned when she heard what he said.
After Adams left, Jessica leaned closer and spoke into Summer’s ear. “A superstar is a superstar. He’s gentle and magnanimous, he’s boyfriend material.”
“I don’t think so.” Summer took her eyes off him and shook her head.
“Of course, you don’t think so; you have our big boss.”
Jessica kept babbling, but she did not listen. Her mind was elsewhere.
When she first met Adams, she felt that he was gentle and magnanimous.
It gave her a good feeling about him, and it made her want to get close to him.
Recently, however, she had found Adams weird.
Thinking of it, she only realized now that she had never seen him get angry.
He never even showed any expression that suggested so.
He always had a smile on his face, as though he never got angry no matter what happened.
He always looked calm, and no one knew exactly if there was anything that could make his hackles rise, except for that one time when she saw him in front of the teahouse.
She began to realize that Adams had been different since she last saw him at the teahouse.
He was still wearing that gentle smile when he met people, but her gut feeling told her that something was off. Was it all in her head because what she saw at the teahouse bothered her?
…
Summer was at odds with Leonardo in the morning because of the trending topic.
They had been busy the whole day, and no one had time to call the other.
As always, Leonardo only came home after Summer had fallen asleep at night.
He entered the bedroom, very careful not to make a sound, and saw Summer’s hand dangling by the bed.
Her mobile phone was just next to her hand. She must have fallen asleep while looking at her mobile phone.
Putting her mobile phone away and placing her hand back on the bed, he sat on the edge of the bed, staring at her for a while.
Only then did he get up and go into the bathroom.
Hearing the closing of the bathroom door, Summer suddenly woke up from her sleep, her eyes wide open.
Leonardo had asked her not to wait for him because he was always coming home late recently. But she still waited for him instinctively. She could not really sleep in peace. In her shallow sleep, any sound would easily wake her up.
She flipped over, her back facing the bathroom, and continued to sleep. But when she closed her eyes, she got more awake.
Not long after, Leonardo came out of the bathroom. Not wanting to disturb Summer’s sleep, he just turned on the small wall lamp when he came home just now. The room was dim, but he had noticed that Summer had turned her body.
He tucked the duvet over her and climbed on the bed from the other side, habitually drawing her into his arms as he lay down.
He felt her body stiffening. She must have been awake by now, but he did not make a sound.
After a while, Summer could not stand it. Pretending to roll in her sleep to face the other side, away from his arms.
With his arms empty now, Leonardo felt not very happy about it.
Apparently, the woman was in a sulk. He reached to hug her again.
But a moment later, Summer played the same old trick again. After this went on a few times, Leonardo lost his patience.
“Summer, what’s the matter with you?” he asked in the dark with his low and cold voice.
“Nothing.” Her voice was indifferent. She did not bother to pretend asleep again.
Both of them sounded fully awake.
They did not look like ones who were sleeping.
Leonardo was silent.
After a while, he said, “I’ve been busy lately. I hope you understand.”
“You think I’m not understanding enough?” Summer sneered. “I’m busy too, mind you.”
The misunderstanding in the morning was not even a quarrel.
It was not really a big deal. Had Leonardo made some effort to coax her, things would have been over.
But the way he talked sounded as if he was blaming her.
Sometimes, when a misunderstanding deepened, it was difficult to sort out who was right and who was wrong.
They both had been busy lately, he was coming home late, and she did not get to sleep any better. Was it not enough that she did not make a fuss of things? He just wanted more understanding from her. But why could he not make an effort to cajole her?
Anger was brewing. Summer whipped the duvet off her and got out of bed. “I’ll sleep next door. We need a break.”
