Chapter 80 Up To No Good

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

Lynn had been spoiling Vicky to the bone. Hearing compliments about Vicky from others was feeding his feel-good mindset. In simple terms, to the Jarrett family, Summer had been no less obedient than a dog all these years. So, Lynn began to fall for the trap. The straw that broke the camel’s back was her manufactured tears. His guard finally crumbled.
“Okay, I’ll transfer you over there. But if I see that you can’t cope, I’ll transfer you back to the Marketing Department.”
“Thank you, Dad!”
Summer broke into a sweet smile. Human preference for beauty was inherent. As Summer had become pretty, Lynn began to find her more pleasing to the eyes. That was further aided by the “Thank you, Dad”.
“First, go back to your place. I’ll tell Vicky about it and let you know when to move over.”
Out of Lynn’s office, Summer’s expression changed. She wiped her tears away, and there was a sly smile on her lips.

After Summer left, Lynn called Vicky on the intercom. She came in, appearing impatient. “Dad, what’s up? I have a lot of work to do.”
Not bothered by her attitude, Lynn gently said, “Summer just came to see me. She asked to be transferred to your division, wanting to learn from you. What do you think?”
“She asked?” Vicky was in disbelief.
“Yes, she asked.”
“Do you think she’s sincere about wanting to learn from me? She must be up to no good,” Vicky sneered, her voice adamant. “Daddy, don’t transfer her over. Just looking at her face gets on my nerves.”
Initially, Lynn wanted to consult with Vicky about it, but when she made a hard stance on the matter, Vicky only showed her disrespect for him. So, of course, he was cheesed off.
“Vicky! No matter what, you two are sisters. Besides, I still need her to talk Leonardo into investing in our company. I’ve already decided, and I will transfer her to your department. Take care of her.”
“Daddy! How could you do that? I told you I’m not going to accept her into my department. Didn’t you hear?”
“How dare you, Vicky!” Lynn chided.
“Fine, fine! Whatever!”
Sensing his anger, Vicky had no choice but to give in. She then barged out of his office, slamming the door shut behind her. Lynn frowned and started to question if he had spoiled her, so much so that all she knew was to throw a tantrum in front of him.

It did not take long before Summer received a memo, informing her about the transfer. She packed her things up in a box, not that there were many. After she said goodbye to the few colleagues she was acquainted with, she carried the box and headed to the Project Department.
Arriving before Vicky’s office, she gave it two knocks. It did not take long for Vicky’s voice to be heard. “Come in.”
All smiles, Summer opened the door and walked in. “Here I am, Elder Sis. I’m glad we can work together.”
“You should address me as Ms. Jarrett in the office.” Vicky’s face darkened when she saw Summer.
“Hi, Ms. Jarrett,” Summer greeted smilingly.
Seeing her smile, Vicky could not help but feel like she was being sandbagged. So, she instructed someone to bring Summer a large carton of documents.
She then told her to photocopy and put them into the shredder. Basically, that was what Summer did the entire day.
She thought Summer would get angry after a while. Little did she expect, Summer kept calm and steady, finishing the job without a single word of complaint.
Vicky found it incredible. Did Summer have a change of heart? She had just come into her office and almost beat her up the day before. No, she refused to believe that Summer had a change of heart.
In the evening, right before the day ended, Vicky instructed someone to deliver another carton of documents to Summer. While everyone had left, Summer was still photocopying the documents.
Vicky went to check her out in the photocopy room. Seeing Summer still doing her job there, she approached her and squinted.
“Summer, what are you up to this time? You can fool my dad, but you won’t fool me.”
“I didn’t fool you about anything. I really think you’re awesome, and I’m here to learn from you.” Summer suddenly changed her tone of voice. “If I don’t learn anything here, I wonder what people will think about you. Will they think you’re inept?”
“I knew you were up to no good!” Vicky sneered.
Summer shot her a glance and ignored her from then on as she continued to sort out the documents. She heard a long time ago that Vicky had accomplished nothing in her position as the project manager and all she knew was to take credit from her subordinates.
“As long as Dad knows that I’m sincere about learning from you, is it important whether I’m up to no good?” Summer sneered, retrieving the last piece of document from the photocopy machine. She then turned around and left.

The last light always came early in the winter. By the time Summer walked out from the Jarrett Group, the sky had turned dark and Tim had been waiting for quite a while.
She got into the vehicle and said to Tim, “You don’t have to pick me up every day. I can take a cab home.”
She had never received such privileged treatment with a chauffeur service and the like previously. Although she knew that it was out of Leonardo’s kindness, she just could not get used to it. However, Tim’s reply was just as solemn as ever.
“It’s the young master’s instruction. I’m just doing my job.”
Back at the mansion, Summer suddenly thought of the Black Card that “Douglas” had given her. Putting down her handbag and taking the Black Card with her, she went to look for Leonardo in the study room.
When Leonardo was at home, he spent most of his time in the study room, seemingly always busy with something. Like before, he sat with his back to her, voice hoarse.
“Anything?”
“I found a Black Card on the floor. I reckon it must belong to you.” Summer did not dare tell him it was “Douglas” who gave it to her.
Leonardo only spoke after a long while. “Since you found it on the floor, just keep it.”
“But I hear that it’s expensive…” It was so expensive that it knocked Jerome and Vicky’s socks off.
“As expensive as it is, it will only be useful if you use it.”
Leonardo’s voice lacked any emotional changes, but his reply left Summer transfixed for a second because she felt that he had a point and she could not find a word to respond. As Leonardo said nothing more, Summer turned around and left.
At night, Jessica rang her up to tell her that she was coming home tomorrow. “Let’s book a place and have dinner together.”
Summer glanced at the Black Card in her handbag and said, “Let’s dine at the Golden Cauldron.”
“Did you just win the five-million-yuan lottery or what?”
“Sort of…” Since Leonardo told her that despite how expensive it was, it would only be useful if it was used, she decided to give it a shot.
