Glancing at him, Summer sounded serious. “I’m not getting down. They’re bullying you. But fret not, I’m here!”
By then, Carl had sneaked up to them. Hearing what Summer said, he chuckled. Leonardo had always been the bully, not the other way round.
Summer continued to look at those men. “Did you all hear me clearly? Now, come and kowtow to me!”
Never had a woman dare start a fight with them. The men rolled up their sleeves and approached Summer, wanting to give her some “good news”. Just then, Tim arrived with a group of bodyguards and quickly contained the situation.
Going up to Leonardo, Tim asked, “Young Master, what should we do with these guys?”
Leonardo glanced over at Summer, who was still cheering like a possessed woman with a broken bottle in her hand. He said, “Have them kowtow and apologize to her.”
“What?” Tim thought he heard wrongly. Later, a scene unfolded in the pub where a group of men was on their knees, kowtowing to Summer while apologizing, “Madam, it was our bad.”
…
On the way home, Tim was behind the wheel. Looking in the rearview mirror, he could see Leonardo sitting at the back and holding Summer as she slept soundly in his arms.
Tim could not really make out his expression, but from the looks of things in the cabin, he could sense that the young master was in a very good mood. That one thing puzzled him; what could have put the young master in such a mood?
It did not take long before they arrived at the mansion. Leonardo carried Summer out of the vehicle and headed directly upstairs. He stopped in front of his bedroom and hesitated for a while before he proceeded to Summer’s room.
She had made a scene in the pub earlier, and she looked so much lovelier in her sleep. He wondered who she learned the yelling and bottle smashing schtick from.
He looked at her; he could sense her breathing and her lustrous lips parting slightly as if they were welcoming him. Leonardo leaned over and stared at her for a few seconds, but resistance was futile. He kissed her.
“She stinks!” he muttered hoarsely to himself as he lifted his lips from hers.
He left after he turned on the heater and put the quilt over her.
…
The next day when Summer woke up, she had a bad hangover. Her head was spinning.
Closing her eyes again, she waited for a while and let her head do its job.
She only opened her eyes again after that and felt better. Propping herself up on her bed, she looked around the familiar bedroom. She got out of bed and entered the bathroom.
How did she come home last night? She remembered that “Douglas” dropped by the pub to look for her. They got drunk together, then she blacked out… She could remember nothing.
She sorted herself out, opened the door, and went downstairs. A few paces down, she started to tiptoe like a thief and looked around sheepishly.
Jessica, the only other person who had ever drunk with her, told her that she behaved like a different person whenever she got plastered.
She was now unsure whether she had done anything improper to “Douglas” last night. Summer breathed a sigh of relief when she discovered that “Douglas” was not in the living room.
“Good morning!”
A voice struck her out of the blue. Summer nearly jumped out of her skin. She looked in the direction of the voice and saw “Douglas” sauntering out from the kitchen with a glass of water in his hand.
“Good-Good morning,” Summer greeted back.
Leonardo walked up to her. Seeing that she was full of beans, there was a not-too-happy undertone in his voice. “You had a good sleep last night?”
“It was okay…” Summer answered.
Leonardo sneered as he walked past her. While she slept soundly, he had a wet dream all night long.
Summer caught up with him and cautiously said, “Thank you for last night… for drinking with me.”
While she spoke, she tried to observe the changes in his expression. She could not recall anything after her blackout last night. Leonardo looked at her; seeing that there was nothing off with her expression, he figured that she could not recall the previous night’s events.
He then said meaningfully, “Don’t drink next time. You were lucky this time because of me. Otherwise…”
He stopped there and let it hang. That made Summer’s heart sink. What did she do last night? She must have done something unbecoming judging from his hesitation. But she dared not ask, fearing that it would only embarrass herself.
Satisfied with Summer’s reaction, Leonardo went upstairs with his glass of water. The woman was a surprise.
He did not know that Summer, who looked like a soft and composed lady, would be so brutal when drunk.
She was lucky that he was there last night. Otherwise, who would have helped her clean up the mess she left behind?
Summer was sad the day before. As Jessica was away working, she did not want to bother her with her own problems.
She had no one to turn and could only drink her sorrows away. Come to think of it, she started to find herself useless.
She bet that Karen still did not realize how she had wronged her; she could only withdraw into herself and lick her own wounds.
Summer had a clear idea of what she wanted. She either liked something or hated it. There was never a middle ground. She was obedient to Karen previously because she yearned for her love and attention. But now, she had gotten wise, realizing that she could never get the slightest sympathy from Karen.
Furthermore, the enmity between her and Vicky had grown deeper. Vicky would surely want her revenge, and so did she. They had made use of her, squeezing every last drop from her. She would not grin and bear it anymore.
…
When Summer arrived at the Jarrett Group, she went straight into Lynn’s office. Lynn frowned upon seeing her, his voice filled with irritation. “Can I help you?”
“I can’t work as a market surveyor. I’d like to join the Project Division and learn from Sis.” Summer put on a sincere look, giving Lynn a hard time to make out her real intentions.
Market surveying was a lower-rung job while the Project Division was the most important part of the company. Lynn’s purpose for arranging Summer to work in the Marketing Department was to keep her away from the projects. That way, she would not be able to do him any damage even if she held the shares in the Jarrett Group.
“You can’t even do your job as a market surveyor. What makes you think you can handle the work in the Project Division and learn from Vicky?” Lynn gave it a thought and figured that he could not trust Summer.
Summer smiled, looking determined. “Well, I think Elder Sis has been outstanding in her work. I just want to follow her, and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from her. I’ve admired her ability since I was young. As you know, I’ve always listened to her and liked her all along. Just that recently… It was all my fault…” Summer began to lower her voice and managed two drops of tears from her eyes.
