The next morning, it was almost eight when Ji Yan woke up. She was shocked. Regardless of the pain in her abdomen, she put on her slippers and ran downstairs hurriedly.
However, it was too late. Shang Jinshen and Mrs. Shang were already sitting at the dining table and having breakfast.
Seeing this, Ji Yan pretended to be calm and went back to the bedroom. After quickly washing up, she changed her clothes and went downstairs.
“Come, son. Have more dishes.”
Mrs. Shang put the food into Shang Jinshen’s bowl with a smile. She snorted when she saw Ji Yan come down.
“Oh, it seems that it’s better to be the Young Madam. No one will care even if she sleeps until the sun is hung high in the sky.”
Ji Yan calmly walked to Shang Jinshen and sat down beside him. She took the bread on the table and prepared to spread some butter on it for Shang Jinshen.
“Mom, I knew that Ji Yan had an operation yesterday, so I advised her to sleep a little longer in the morning.”
Shang Jinshen took a sip of the milk on the table and then looked at Ji Yan.
“How do you feel today?”
Ji Yan looked at Shang Jinshen and shook her head nervously. She suddenly thought about something and nodded her head instead.
“Are you mute?” Mrs. Shang placed her chopsticks heavily on the table in anger. “You shook your head and then nodded. You don’t speak human language, do you?”
Ji Yan took a deep breath and looked at Shang Jinshen. “Jinshen, I feel much better. Can I… Can I go to work today?”
Ji Yan handed the bread in her hand to Shang Jinshen.
Shang Jinshen took the bread and looked at Ji Yan with a cold smile. “Are you sure that your body is fine now?”
“Of course!” Ji Yan answered in a hurry. “Besides, I am responsible for a few projects in the company. It’s time to go and have a look today.”
Before Shang Jinshen could answer, Mrs. Shang shook her head and sneered. “You should resign from your little design job as soon as possible. If you work outside, people will think that we can’t afford to have a daughter-in-law!”
“Mom, that’s not what I meant!”
As soon as Mrs. Shang heard the address, she immediately glared at Ji Yan. Her eyes shot daggers at her.
Ji Yan gulped and continued to explain, “Mom, others won’t think so.” After saying that, she looked at Shang Jinshen for help.
But Shang Jinshen only lowered his head and ate his bread elegantly. He had no intention of lending a hand at all.
Ji Yan had no choice but to also lower her head and eat.
“I don’t care what you mean.” Mrs. Shang picked up the milk and took a sip. “I only know that since you have entered our family, you have to abide by our rules. As the Young Madam, your urgent task is to produce an heir quickly.”
Ji Yan felt a sudden pain in her heart when she heard Mrs. Shang’s words and she almost dropped the bread in her hand on the ground.
“Mother, we have our plans,” Shang Jinshen said as he glanced at Ji Yan, “I’m going to work. Have you finished?”
Ji Yan threw down the remaining bread in her hand and stood up immediately. “I’m done!”
Shang Jinshen rolled his eyes at Ji Yan and pushed his wheelchair toward the door.
Ji Yan was smart this time. She picked up her bag from the sofa, followed Shang Jinshen, and got into the car.
In the large manor, all that was left were Mrs. Shang and the leftovers on the table.
After getting in the car, Ji Yan fidgetted with her pocket, glancing at Shang Jinshen from time to time. Shang Jinshen was staring at his laptop screen while looking at the stock market.
“Spit it out if you have anything to say!”
After feeling Ji Yan’s gaze on him from time to time, Shang Jinshen closed his laptop and spoke in a cold voice.
“Well!” Ji Yan took out Shang Jinshen’s handkerchief from her pocket. “Thank you for yesterday. I’ve washed the handkerchief. I’m returning it to you now.”
Shang Yang took a deep look at the square handkerchief she had folded and reached out to pick it up.
Just as Ji Yan breathed a sigh of relief, Shang Jinshen rolled down the window and let go of the handkerchief in his hand.
“I’m sorry. I never use anything that someone else has used.”
“You!” Ji Yan forced herself to calm down. “Shang Jinshen, am I someone else? I am your wife.”
“Wife?” Shang Jinshen looked at Ji Yan and smiled sarcastically. “I didn’t expect you to be quite involved in this play. However, when did I admit it?”
Ji Yan felt a buzz in her head and she clenched her fists. A rush of anger flooded her, then she also felt a burst of pain in her abdomen.
“You don’t need to do such useless things in the future.”
Shang Jinshen opened the laptop again.
Ji Yan pressed a hand on her stomach, took a deep breath, and leaned back in the seat. “I know. In addition, I will pay you back the money I owe you.”
Shang Jinshen felt like he had heard a joke. He turned his face and looked at Ji Yan.
“I won’t take back the money that I, Shang Jinshen, have given away,” Shang Jinshen said and touched his chin with one hand. “Stupid woman, did you think you can return the money to me and your dignity?”
“Shang Jinshen!”
Ji Yan couldn’t bear it anymore and she yelled out in tears.
“Shang Jinshen, can’t you say something nice? Yes, I admit that I am poor, I admit that I can sacrifice my life for money, but I still think that I am prouder than you, a pitiful man with a ruined appearance!”
When the assistant driving the car heard Ji Yan’s words, he reflexively stopped on the side of the road.
“Ouch!”
Ji Yan bumped her head on the seat due to inertia. But then she pulled open the car door and jumped out without thinking.
The assistant looked at Shang Jinshen. His face was cold and no emotions could be seen on it.
“Mr. Shang, what…”
“Don’t worry about her. Go to the company.”
Shang Jinshen leaned against the back of the seat and shut his eyes with trembling eyelashes. Ji Yan’s arrogant appearance came to his mind again. It turned out that in the heart of that stupid woman, he was merely a pitiful person.
Shang Jinshen took a deep breath as blue veins stood out on his forehead and hands.
In this case, he wanted to see how this woman would beg him, the pitiful one, to take pity on her!
Ji Yan walked in the bleak autumn wind. Although she had covered herself with her coat as much as possible, the cold breeze still seeped in. She couldn’t help shaking.
Ji Yan took out her phone to check the time. She was late anyway. So she sat down on the bench in the garden with her hands on her stomach.
The fragrance of coffee mixed with bread from the nearby cafe drifted in the air with the cool autumn breeze. As soon as Ji Yan smelled it, her stomach immediately growled.
She rummaged through her pockets and her bag. Somewhat upset, she finally confirmed that as the Young Madam of the Shang family, she did not have a penny on her.
Tears rolled down her cheeks and Ji Yan wiped them off without saying anything. Looking at the crowd of people coming and going in a hurry, Ji Yan bitterly thought that she was the pitiful one in reality.
