As soon as Shang Jinshen entered, his eyes fell on Ji Yan lying on the sofa.
His face sank. “What’s going on?”
Mrs. Shang immediately went up to greet him. She turned to look at Ji Yan and avoided the question.
“Oh, son, I can smell the alcohol on your body. Did you go out to socialize and drink again?”
Mrs. Shang held Shang Jinshen’s face and turned to look at Madam Zhang, ordering, “Hurry up, make some sobering soup for the Young Master.”
Hearing it, Madam Zhang first looked at Ji Yan uneasily. In the end, she went to the kitchen.
Shang Jinshen raised his hand and flung away Mrs. Shang’s enthusiasm. “Mom, what the h*ll is going on?”
He pointed at Ji Yan, who had fainted on the sofa. There was a little dissatisfaction in his tone. “She was fine when I went out.” Shang Jinshen looked at Mrs. Shang. “Did you make trouble again?”
“No!” Mrs. Shang walked back with an unhappy face. “How can I argue with her? But my son, what do you mean by letting her poor relatives come to our house?”
As she spoke, Mrs. Shang sat on the sofa and glanced at Ji Yan with a disgusted face.
The cold-faced assistant pushed Shang Jinshen over. Shang Jinshen raised his hand. Then the assistant walked to Ji Yan and picked her up, heading to the bedroom on the second floor.
“Mom, it was my idea.”
Shang Jinshen held Mrs. Shang’s hand. “Ji Yan had a small surgery in the afternoon. Her mother called, so I asked her to visit Ji Yan.”
Seeing that her son’s attitude had eased, Mrs. Shang didn’t say anything else and held his hand instead.
“Son, on this trip I went with your dad, I’m guessing that he wants to expand the overseas market,” Mrs. Shang said, holding Shang Jinshen’s hand. “I don’t know what the old man is thinking now. If he leaves the overseas market to that illegitimate son…”
Mrs. Shang paused for a moment after she spoke then let out a slight sigh.
“He won’t!” Shang Jinshen was certain. “Even if he wants to, he has to ask if my legs will agree.” He gave Mrs. Shang a meaningful look. “Don’t worry too much. I’ll be all you need in the business.”
At the same time, Madam Zhang came out with a bowl of sobering soup. Mrs. Shang took it and handed it to Shang Jinshen.
“Drink it!” Mrs. Shang’s face was full of smiles. “My good son, if you can let your father hold a grandson at this time, we will have a reassurance.”
Shang Jinshen’s hand, which was holding the soup meant for sobering up, shook slightly. Then he gulped down the soup in one go.
After that, he returned to his bedroom.
Looking at Ji Yan lying on the bed, Shang Jinshen suddenly became sober. He rolled the wheelchair to Ji Yan’s side. Under the light of the yellow wall lamp, the fingerprints on Ji Yan’s face appeared indistinctly.
Shang Jinshen felt a sting in his heart. This stupid woman! How did she get hurt again when he was only out of the house for a while?
With these thoughts in mind, Shang Jinshen went into the bathroom and turned on the water tap.
Looking at the water gushing out, Shang Jinshen thought of the scene in the afternoon when Ji Yan jumped into the river. He shook his head and put the towel in the water.
When he returned to Ji Yan’s side, he carefully covered the fingerprint on Ji Yan’s face with the towel in his hand.
Staring at Ji Yan’s eyelashes, which were as thick as butterfly wings, Shang Jinshen’s heart inexplicably softened. He thought of the softness of her body and the despair in her eyes.
His hand started shaking and Shang Jinshen was in a panic. How could he feel anything for a woman who only cared about her own interests?
With this in mind, Shang Jinshen immediately withdrew his hand and threw the towel on the bedside table.
In the middle of the night, Ji Yan woke up in a trance. She struggled to lift her body and leaned against the bedpost.
She habitually looked at the window, only to find that Shang Jinshen came back at some point.
“Hey, why don’t you go to bed?”
As Ji Yan spoke, she subconsciously pulled open the quilt and walked over.
When she walked to Shang Jinshen, Ji Yan found that he was already asleep in a wheelchair. It was still raining outside when she glanced out of the window. Ji Yan wanted to wake him up, but her hand stopped in the air.
She smelled the faint scent of alcohol on Shang Jinshen’s body.
Therefore, to prevent waking Shang Jinshen up, Ji Yan opened the cabinet, took a velvet blanket from it, and wanted to cover his body with it.
Ji Yan looked at Shang Jinshen’s firm but disfigured face and her heart throbbed. She thought that Shang Jinshen wasn’t actually as cold-hearted as he looked, was he?
What exactly did Shang Jinshen look like in the past?
She gently covered his body with the velvet blanket as she thought about it.
“It seems that you are used to my face.”
Shang Jinshen suddenly opened his eyes and stared at Ji Yan. Ji Yan was so frightened that she trembled and almost fell to the ground. However, Shang Jinshen reacted quickly and grabbed her. Shang Jinshen turned the wheelchair so that she fell into his arms.
“Well, you… Were you not asleep?” Ji Yan asked in a thin voice.
“I was asleep! But I woke up because of your good intention,” Shang Jinshen said, glancing at Ji Yan’s bare feet, and then frowned. “You’d better let me feel assured.”
Before Ji Yan could react to Shang Jinshen’s words, he held her in his arms then threw her directly on the bed.
Holding the quilt and glancing at Shang Jinshen, who was about to leave, Ji Yan couldn’t help but open her mouth again.
“Aren’t you going to sleep?”
Shang Jinshen raised his eyebrows and slid the wheelchair close to Ji Yan. “Why? Did you miss me?”
Shang Jinshen reached out to pinch Ji Yan’s chin but Ji Yan instinctively dodged.
“Well, you should sleep here. I’ll sleep inside,” Ji Yan said as she got up and was ready to go to her own small bed.
“No need!” Shang Jinshen’s voice dropped a few degrees as compared to before. He immediately met Ji Yan’s gaze and pointed to the bed. “It’s dirty.”
After that, Shang Jinshen pushed his wheelchair out of the bedroom.
Ji Yan was stunned and froze on the bed. Then her red eyes stared at the newly changed bed sheet. After a long while, she hugged the quilt tightly. The blood in the afternoon appeared again in front of her. She looked up and wanted to hold back her tears, but the pain from her abdomen made her bend down.
Ji Yan buried her face in the quilt. Finally, she couldn’t bear it anymore and burst into tears.
Shang Jinshen, who had been waiting outside the bedroom, frowned and clenched his fists secretly when he heard the crying sounds coming from inside. Was this the result he wanted?
He forced himself to calm down, then slid into his wheelchair and went straight to the study. No matter how aggrieved this stupid woman was, he had already done his utmost for her.
After all, she chose her own life!
