Ji Yan didn’t know how long she had been sitting on the bench. It wasn’t until her phone rang that she came to her senses.
The person who called was her company’s manager. Ji Yan took a deep breath and immediately adjusted her mentality.
“Manager, I’m on my way now. I’ll be there soon. I encountered something on the way, so I haven’t arrived at the company yet.”
Ji Yan hurried to explain while holding her phone, for fear that the manager would be pissed off.
“Miss Ji!”
The manager’s tone was oddly respectful as if he was not talking to his subordinate at all.
“It doesn’t matter. There’s nothing to do in the morning as well. If it’s inconvenient for you, you can come later,” The manager said then laughed on the other end of the phone.
“Miss Ji, I called you with some good news.”
“Good news?” Ji Yan looked up at the clear sky. She might be the one who needed some good news to save her the most in the world.
“Go ahead!”
“Here’s the thing. We just received an invitation from the headquarters yesterday. It was said that there would be an international competition hosted by GN Corp. and the headquarters hope that we can find a representative to participate in it.”
“GN Corp?” Ji Yan repeated in excitement, “Manager, are you talking about the one in Pearsonland?”
The manager heard Ji Yan’s voice and laughed. “Miss Ji, there is only one GN Corp. that is related to the designing field in the world.”
“Okay, I’ll come to the company right away.”
Ji Yan got up and planned to walk to the company, but the pain in her abdomen made her frown again. At this time, a taxi was driving over. Ji Yan instinctively wanted to wave at it, but when she thought of her penniless pocket, she gritted her teeth and put down her hand.
“Ji Yan?”
A bright voice sounded behind Ji Yan. She turned around and saw a girl with a round face and vaguely mushroom-like hair appearing in front of her.
Her brain was spinning rapidly, but after rummaging through her memory, she still found nothing.
“Ji Yan, don’t you remember me?” The girl came over and took Ji Yan’s hand. “I’m Li Wenjing.”
The girl said as she moved her face closer to Ji Yan. “Don’t you remember? We were in the same club in college.”
Ji Yan’s memory was instantly awakened and a long-lost smile appeared on her face.
“I remember now. You’re the one who insisted on learning design despite your talent in maths, aren’t you?”
Ji Yan smiled, but then there was another sting in her abdomen. She hissed and covered her stomach.
Li Wenjing had sharp eyes. She looked at Ji Yan’s pale face and showed concern. “Ji Yan, are you all right? Why do you look a little pale?”
“It’s nothing, I’m fine.”
Ji Yan struggled to wave her hand, feeling that her fortune was coming.
The old friends were happy to see each other, so the two of them talked and laughed while walking. At the end of the conversation, they were surprised to find that they were now working in the same building.
The difference was that Ji Yan works in a first-class design company, while Li Wenjing was a copywriter in a third-rate advertising company.
Li Wenjing shook her head and stuffed Ji Yan into the taxi while sighing about the unfairness of fate.
“Ji Yan, do you think I’m a failed work of God? That’s why He’s always been too lazy to bother about me,” Li Wenjing said, smiling bitterly at Ji Yan. “Who would have thought that after learning design, the past mathematics genius would be working in copywriting now?”
“Don’t be discouraged. We are still young! Anyway, you returned from overseas.”
Ji Yan patted Li Wenjing’s head to comfort her.
“Wenjing, if you don’t like your current job, why don’t you take an accounting exam as soon as possible so that you can make use of your mathematical talent?”
Li Wenjing stared at Ji Yan with her eyes wide open. For a moment, she was enlightened.
“Ji Yan, you’re my savior. You’ve just woke me up,” Li Wenjing said happily as she put her arms around Ji Yan’s neck. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Ji Yan was stunned by Li Wenjing’s sudden hug. She could even feel her breath! She could not remember how long it has been since she experienced a wonderful friendship.
Ji Yan smiled and pinched Li Wenjing’s round face. “Because there was only food on your brain!”
After that, they looked at each other and laughed.
“Ji Yan, shall we have dinner together tonight? It’s my treat.” Li Wenjing looked at Ji Yan with a smile. “By the way, are you married? If you need to accompany your husband, I can line up!”
Hearing the word “husband”, Ji Yan immediately thought of Shang Jinshen’s terrifying face.
“Let’s talk about it after work. We’ll talk on WeChat later!”
“Okay, I’ll wait for your news.”
As soon as Ji Yan entered the company, she felt that something was wrong with the atmosphere. Her colleagues, who usually treated her coldly in daily life, smiled at her with a flattering face.
When she sat down in the office, the manager pushed the door open and came in.
“Miss Ji!” The manager walked to the chair opposite Ji Yan and sat down with a smile. “Oh, you don’t look well.”
Ji Yan touched her pale and cold face guiltily. “I don’t feel comfortable today.”
“Miss Ji, the burden on your shoulders is not light. You must take care of yourself.”
Ji Yan was a little confused when she heard the manager’s words. The manager had never been so enthusiastic and thoughtful to her, even when she won an award. What had happened in the past two days?
Was it because of Shang Yu An? Ji Yan remembered that Shang Yu An had once told her he would help if there were trouble. Did he secretly ask the manager to take care of her?
“Miss Ji?” The manager reached out and waved in front of Ji Yan. “What are you thinking about?”
Ji Yan was embarrassed and came to her senses. “Nothing! Manager, if you have something to say, just say it.”
The manager looked at Ji Yan in surprise. “Okay, then I won’t beat around the bush.”
As he spoke, he took out a paper bag and placed it on the table.
“Miss Ji, you did a good job for our company when you won the award last time. So, according to the group’s decision, you will be in charge of designing and leading the team.”
Ji Yan looked at the manager’s mouth opening and closing and suddenly felt unreal.
“Manager, are you kidding me?”
Ji Yan pointed at her nose and then blinked in disbelief.
“Although I won a prize, in terms of the company’s current situation, no one would agree with me being the lead designer. How could I…”
The manager stood up and looked at Ji Yan with a meaningful smile.
“Miss Ji, what era is it now? In the past, young people didn’t have many opportunities because of limited social resources. But now, it’s very different.”
“Social resources?” Ji Yan murmured in her heart.
“In this society, whoever has strength and resources is most likely to have it all,” The manager said as he patted the paper bag on the table. “Miss Ji, fortunately, you have both of them.”
