At the hospital
The surgery was done successfully, and I’m glad to be a father, not just a father, but to a set of twins. Yes! Ariel gave me a set of girl twins, and they are so pretty. Gosh! I have to be the happiest man on earth right now. Although I can’t touch the babies yet, since they are incubated, but still, I can’t help but be really excited. My biggest happiness is my woman making it out of that operation room alive, because why not?
She has been sleeping the whole day after the operation, and the doctor told me not to worry about anything since she was sedated, that it was the reason she was still sleeping, and guess what? I can’t wait for her to be awake so I can break the news of our child to her.
As I step out of the ward, I stop on my track when I hear Mr. Daniel and Ariel’s mom arguing. I haven’t talked about this, but it feels crazy that Ariel turned out to be this man’s daughter. That plot twist was what I never imagined in my lifetime, although she told me she haven’t seen her father since the day she was born.
“I’m really sorry… Why are you hesitating to forgive me?” The man looks sincere as he pleads with her. I don’t know what might’ve transpired between them in the past, but with the look in his eyes, I know he must’ve felt really guilty about it.
“What do you want me to do? I told you that I already forgive you, Daniel… You want me to jump into your arms and find solace in them? You want me to come crawling back to you?” She scoffs as she crosses her arms on her chest, and I sigh briefly. Now, I’m glad I never let Ariel go. If I had, maybe one day in the future, we would’ve been having this argument, and maybe live the rest of my life without her. At this point, that is like a punishment from God that I won’t ever want to experience. Not in my lifetime, please.
I sigh briefly as I turn and walk away. Since they are trying to sort things out, it wouldn’t be nice to just walk in on them and get them distracted. I just hope that they are able to sort things out and be happy with each other, if not for anything, but for the sake of their daughter, Ariel.
I wanted to go inside the ward, but my phone suddenly starts ringing, and I bring it out of my pocket to see that it was a strange number. I slide the answer button, heading to the balcony of the hospital to talk to whoever the person is.
“Hello, is this Maxwell Dante I’m speaking with?” The feminine voice sounds terrified over the phone, and I check the screen to be sure that it’s really my phone, but my reaction is fucking crazy, especially knowing that she called my name.
“Who is this?” I ask, confused.
“This is Elizabeth, your mom’s childhood friend. There is something you need to know, please. Let’s meet later. I will send you the address,” The person utters before the call drops dead, and I crease my eyebrows as waves of confusion shoot through me. What the hell was that?
My phone suddenly beeps, and I check the screen to see the address from the person. We are supposed to meet in a remote area where there is just a few houses there, and this is getting me confused.
Still trying to comprehend what the hell just happened, my phone suddenly starts ringing with Alex’s number displayed on the screen. I quickly slide the answer button.
“There is a problem, Max. I followed Dennis secretly and found out he was following Alicia. You need to protect Mr. Daniel and his family… Dennis asked Alicia to kill the whole family and get his property. Ariel is not safe too. You need to protect them for now, while I look into how I can keep Alicia distracted,” My heart sinks into my stomach and my mouth drops open in shock when Alex breaks the news to me.
“Why would he ask that? Should we involve the police?” I wanted to ask him, but I know that I really need to sort this out personally, especially in a case where there is no evidence against them.
“Alright. I will do that,” I reply to him. I sigh briefly, thinking whether I should tell him about the call, but on second thought, I feel that there is no need for him to know about it since he is birthed by a different mom. I mean, I don’t want to bother him, since he already has too much on his plate.
“I am still trying to follow Dad up… I think he is up to something, or maybe hiding something from us. You have nothing to worry about, Max. I will handle it. Just make sure that Ariel and her family are fine. Don’t allow her to get hurt, please,” He utters before the call ends, not after I promised him that I will do as he said, although it’s going to be difficult. I mean it’s going to be hard trying to balance between sorting this shit out, and staying by her side always, since she has to stay in the hospital for two months before she will be discharged. Secondly, it’s going to be difficult to protect her family too, especially in a case where I don’t want to tell them what is happening. I don’t also want to involve the authorities until I’m able to get the whole picture of everything happening now. But in all, I know that this is something I really need to do, and I’m going to do it, anyway.
Taking a deep breath, I turn and walk back to the ward to stay with Ariel, but with many thoughts lingering on my mind. Will this ever end? Will I ever get to breathe again and have nothing to worry about? Where the hell did all these even start from in the first place? Those are the questions I keep asking myself as I stare at Ariel, as if the answers are written on her face. Well, sadly, I can’t even provide the answers as usual, so I just have to give up asking myself…
