Chapter Forty-Six – A job.
It was the third in a row. The third bottle of alcohol Lucy was downing in her stomach out of frustration. She just received her third rejection in a row. No one wanted her ‘expertise’.
She was only twenty-two but was expected to have at least seven years of experience to work at the big shots companies.
“How was that supposed to happen?!” she yelled to the cloud as she chugged another cup of alcohol. She grunted, smashing the cup on the ground when it was empty.
Envy and annoyance filled her heart. Her colleagues working in those companies had connections, their dads knew the right persons.
But in her case, she barely knew her father. And her uncle was as useless as a rock to her. Her mother was also slowly becoming an embarrassment to her.
Lucy hated everything about her. She had no one to turn to!
Just then, she received a beep call. Then a message.
“This is Damien, your in-law, can I call?”
Lucy sat straight, rereading the message. Wasn’t this from Arya’s husband? What could he want to talk to her about?
Her hands ran through her hair in confusion. Being slightly drunk, she had totally forgotten about Anna and Damien’s promise to let her know when things are settled.
“My voice is quite hoarse now. I don’t want a call. Should I act like I didn’t see his text?” she wondered out loud.
Her phone began vibrating and she shrieked, picking it up then sending it to her ears immediately. “Oh, Sir Damien, I’m sorry for not replying immediately. I’m quite drunk now.”
There was silence at the other side.
“Sir Damien? Drunk? Lucy, what are you talking about?”
Lucy pulled the phone from her ears and looked at it. The caller was her mother. She rolled her eyes hard before placing the phone on her ears again.
“Forget that. I thought you were an acquaintance. What did you call for?” she asked.
Ms. Jenna couldn’t forget it. Sir Damien was Arya’s husband who was very rich. He was meant to be a source of income as Arya was married to him but Arya wasn’t cooperating.
If her daughter and such man were acquaintances, then it’s a marvelous thing. Still Ms. Jenna noticed her daughter’s tone wasn’t good so she didn’t bother ask more.
“Oh, right. And you’re drunk? I told you to drop those habits. What happened…”
“Why do you care? Leave me be, mom. I got rejected three times in a row for stupid reasons. I have no one to help me.” Lucy lamented.
She sighed, deeming her lament futile since her mother couldn’t possibly help her no matter how much she cried.
“I wished Aunty Rebecca was still alive. She worked with the government so would have surely gotten me a job.”
Ms. Jenna’s face squeezed angrily. She took the phone from her ears and breathed in and out before taking it up again.
“Lucy, honey, don’t try to compare me and my sister, okay? She’s dead now and I’m the one with you.” She said that with the calmest voice she could possibly muster.
Why would her daughter of all people be the one who constantly reminded her of how great her sister was? Her own daughter who should support her?
“And what job is it this time that you can’t get? If the requirements are too high, go for another. Don’t blame me or yourself, dear.”
“It’s not about requirements. Which world do you live in? As long as you know the right person, one can easily get the job I want. It’s not even a big job.” Lucy scoffed bitterly.
At the other side of the call, Ms. Jenna was once again texting Arya to send her some money. She’d need cash to bribe whoever that was stopping her child from being happy.
Just then, she dropped the phone on her laps and smirked to herself. “Well, that was a very random idea.”
“Mom? Mom? Good, she finally shut up.” Ms. Jenna overheard her daughter mumbling on the phone.
“Watch your mouth, Lucy!” she warned. “Instead of crying to me, who you’ve deemed unworthy to help you, why not meet Sir Damien, your acquaintance? I know who he is.”
Lucy’s eyes widened. Her mother knew who Sir Damien was? Because she was married to Arya? Since when did her mother care about what happened to her nieces?
“I am not on such level with Damien yet.” She replied.
Her mother tsked. “Then become on such level then. What’s stopping you?”
“We had met at a restaurant. Arya and I got into a fight and I basically embarrassed myself. He was only being nice because I’m his in law so there’s no….” she trailed off.
The dizziness in her head cleared off and she remembered why Damien would want to call her. “Oh, I have a reason to call him. Though I don’t think he can help me with the job.”
“What other reason is there? Don’t be direct with him yet.”
Lucy glared at her phone. Why would her mother think she’d go for a relationship with Damien?
After studying him, Lucy has decided he would be a man she can just flirt with and fantasize about.
She had no chance in hell with him. Their social status was too different and he was already into Arya, she could see it.
“Not that. Earlier, we deduced that someone kidnapped Anna and threatened to harm Arya. I thought hard on it and with the latest news, I think it’s an enemy of Sir Damien.” She said.
Ms. Jenna’s mouth dropped. She remembered hearing of some CEO’s house being attacked but she didn’t pay attention to the details. “Oh, I get it now. This is your chance then.”
“Yeah, I guess. He texted recently asking if he should call. But mom, I don’t know how to break it to him about the job…”
“Honey, aren’t you desperate? Tell him! Goodness, if Arya can’t send me money, the least she can do is have her husband help you get a job!” Her mother retorted.
An eyebrow of Lucy’s raised when her mother spoke of Arya not sending her money.
She shook her head. “Sir Damien is definitely more approachable than Arya. I’d find a way to talk him into it.”
Ms. Jenna smiled. “You better.”
