Chapter Forty-Two – Scolded.
A minute passed between them with Arya wondering if he’d knock her out and kidnap her or just let her go but then he rolled his eyes.
“You’re not that pretty on closer look.” He deadpanned.
She sighed and her eyes narrowed on him. Did she look like she cared what he thought of her, especially at that moment?
He didn’t even look like he had good taste. “I don’t care what you think, just leave me alone.”
The boy didn’t look familiar so she knew she never offended him. And Damien said something about him being from China. She had never been there before.
He had also added that the boy shouldn’t take orders from some bitch. This bitch could be the one who asked for her death. “Stop wasting your life trying to help a bitch.”
“What do you know.” Chen gestured dismissively and began walking out. “And marrying a powerful man doesn’t make you powerful. Make yourself useful in his life or he’d discard you.”
His words stabbed at Arya’s heart. That was just one of the ways people had called her a gold digger. She hated these scenarios.
“I should get used to it. They have no idea this is an arranged marriage.” she spoke through gritted teeth.
She frowned at the boy leaving and shouted. “I’ll be expecting my sister and Mrs. Wade returned safely. If there’s a scratch on them, you know what Damien will do to you.”
Chen stopped walking and looked over his shoulders. “Don’t dare threaten me with your husband. I’d return them because of him, not you.” He scaled the fence and disappeared.
Arya’s fists clenched tighter. He shouldn’t fear her, she didn’t need his fear. His respect wouldn’t be bad anyway.
A sigh left her lips as she dragged her feet towards the car. That was enough drama for a day. She tried opening the car door and then realized it was locked in.
“Huh?”
She tried pulling again then peeked inside. Everywhere was shut in, windows up and Connor was inside. Could he breathe?
Her mind went back to Damien telling her not to leave the car, she wasn’t with the keys so he’d be. He’d surely know she left the car now. “Damn it!” she cursed, kicking the tyre.
Damien walked down shortly, looking around at the mess down where the balcony at Selena’s room had fallen too. He took out his phone to dial the police.
“Arya? What’s she doing outside?” he wondered too himself seeing her leaning on the car.
Hadn’t Chen walked out there? Why was she risking her safety? Chen was unpredictable and could decide to hurt her even if he doesn’t kidnap her.
“Oh you’re back?” Arya smiled nervously on seeing him.
A hand was on his waist, while the other held up his phone on his ear. The hand on his waist was a subconscious act. Arya looked down feeling like her mother was about scolding her.
“The car got locked before I came in.” she murmured.
“If you were inside, that wouldn’t be a problem.” Damien replied almost immediately.
She sulked.
The police department picked Damien’s call and he tossed the car key to Arya, she caught it just in time. “Please, get in and leave with Connor. The police will be here soon.”
A brow of Arya’s raised questioningly. “Didn’t you say the police shouldn’t be involved?”
“With the damages done now, they should. It’s not like they’d catch Chen anyway. And I need my insurance company to fix this so I’m not keeping quiet about it.” He smirked.
Arya had a smug grin as she got into the car. She was stunned when the car started when she turned the keys. Maybe she could handle cars more than she thought.
“Well then. Be safe and thanks for protecting my sister and I.”
Damien smiled. “You’re family, it’s no problem.”
His words made butterflies move around in Arya’s stomach, she internally frowned at her reaction before reversing the car and leaving the building.
It hasn’t been up to three minutes since she left the estate that Connor sprang up from the back seat.
She glared at him from the side mirror. “Don’t tell me you’ve been awake all these while?”
“Not all the while but certainly for the past ten minutes.” He replied, scratching his head.
“What! Then didn’t you hear me struggling to open the car down and hitting the tyre. Why didn’t you open it from the inside?” she turned to him.
A smirk was on his face. “You came out of your own accord, worried for your husband. Well, I knew it wouldn’t sit well with him so I looked forward to seeing him scold you.”
Arya’s eyes widened as she looked back on the road. “You must have enjoyed seeing it then.”
But Connor tsked. “He didn’t scold you. Just said one line and that’s all. When my cousin scolds someone, then shit their pants; not cause of his words, but his glare.”
A glare was passed to him by Arya but since it wasn’t half as intimidating as the ones he’s used to, Connor didn’t notice and kept on ranting.
“When I mess up big time, I lock myself in my room and wait for him to scold me through the door. Then I don’t get to see the glare. He’s really scary when he’s mad.” Connor chuckled.
Just then he noticed the side eye Arya has been giving him. “Um… I’m not trying to say he’s a bad person, just that he’s a strict man but I doubt you’d really see that side of him.”
Arya didn’t know she had exhaled in relief. She shook Connor’s words off her head.
So far, she’s deemed Damien as a gentle man who smiled a lot and was a really good business man.
But she wasn’t stupid to think that were all the sides to him but if those were the sides he’d like to show during their contract marriage, then it’s okay by her.
She did have a feeling that she might have seen another side of Damien that could be scarier than seeing him being strict.
Like how he said he’d known her for ten years. And how he tracked every gift he got her. And how’d he was sometimes possessive over her around strangers.
If she was stupid, she’d not notice but she did cos she wasn’t.
Unless he was a creepy person, the only other explanation would be that – he was playing the role of a husband and the marriage wasn’t a contracted one for him.
“Ugh… me and my overthinking again.” Arya sighed to herself then pushed her last five minutes thoughts to the back of her damn head.
