As she limped out of the building, more tears streamed down her cheeks. She never thought it would get to this; she never thought that one day her deadlines would come so easily. She had thought that, like all the other ones she had done, finishing Daniel off would be so easy, but then it wasn’t.
She wiped her tears, and just then, she spotted someone. “Martha?” She called, shocked, as she walked towards her.
“Tell me, what are you doing here?” She asked her, and she burst into laughter.
“What did you think? That we would let you stay in Daniel’s house without keeping a spy?” Martha asked, and her eyes widened in shock.
“You work for the godfather?” She asked, and Martha nodded.
“Yes, and I’m the one who reports every single thing you do to him. I…” Without even letting her speak even more, Kathryn gave her a slap across the face in anger.
“How dare you? How could you betray him like that? He gave you a job, Martha. He even let you stay in his house, and this is what you do to him?” She asked angrily as she started to hit Martha even more, but then she wouldn’t have it anymore, and as such, she pushed her to the floor.
“He didn’t give me a job; the agency did. Listen to me well, Kathryn. You’re only there to kill him. Do your job well, and we’ll cover for you. Everything is set; no one will blame you for his death. Just finish him off and let us handle the rest.” Martha said, and Kathryn stared at her, disgusted.
“You’re evil, Martha. You’re evil!” She yelled, and Martha just burst into even more laughter.
“If being evil means making lots of money and getting to live your life out loud, then of course, Kathryn. I’m gladly going to be evil.” She said that, and with that, she helped Kathryn up as she pushed her into a car that was waiting for her.
“Don’t try to act smart, Kathryn. We’re watching you.” She told her with a smirk on her face, and Kathryn wiped her tears.
“You won’t ever forgive yourself, Martha. You’ll be judged for this, and trust me, it’ll happen.” She said that, and Martha just rolled her eyes.
“Maybe you should die with Daniel. We don’t need you anymore.” She said that, and before Kathryn could even speak, the car drove off.
She rested her head as she closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks. She was willing to die; she had committed many mistakes after all, but killing Daniel felt like the biggest mistake she could make in her whole life. But what could she do? The child’s life was in danger; she couldn’t risk it.
She buried her face in her hands. How would she ever be able to live with herself if she ever pulled through with this?
She was dropped out of the house and contemplated leaving, just so she wouldn’t hurt him, when suddenly a video was shown to her.
It was of a little girl; she had been tied up, and she was being hurt badly. Her eyes widened in shock as she grabbed the phone.
“You monster! What are you doing to her? She is but a child; leave her alone!” She screamed in pain as she stared at the little girl being tortured.
“Hi, Kathryn.” Martha spoke on the phone with a smile on her face.
“This is just a kind reminder; I’m not going to spare you if you do anything to hurt Kathryn. Let her go. It’s me you want, right? Take me, just leave her alone!” Kathryn yelled, and Martha burst into laughter.
“I should let her go? Listen, Kat. I know you don’t care about your life. All you care about is the one you love, and that’s this child. She is the only way we can get you to end him, so go on. Kill him, and once you’re done, you’ll get the child. After six long years, Kathryn You’re finally going to have Kathryn in your arms again.” Martha said, and Kathryn dropped the phone as she rushed into the house.
She held on to her chest, closing her eyes as a wave of guilt flushed through her. She walked into the house, and there Daniel was. She stared at him. This was the night; it was the night that she would end him.
She walked to him as she took his hand in hers. “Daniel, I’m so sorry.” She told him as she embraced him, and he stared at her, shocked.
What had happened to her? He patted her back slowly and asked, “What are you sorry for? What’s wrong?” He asked her, and she wiped her tears.
“You’ve been a good friend to me, yet I’ve been a jerk. Forgive me, I only do what I do because… Before she could complete her statement, he placed his index finger over her lips.
“Don’t say anything, Kathryn. You’re not a jerk. I know you’re not.” He told her.
He managed to soothe her, telling her she was a good person and all that, and even though his words only made her feel even more guilt-stricken, she smiled. She had to cherish these memories; after all, they were the last.
She asked him to sleep beside her as she was feeling scared, and he agreed.
In the middle of the night…
She slowly opened her eyes as she stared at him. She picked up the knife beside the bed as she wiped her tears. She had to do this for the sake of the child.
Those people were monsters; they didn’t care about the lives of anyone, and it was only one that she realized it, but it was too late; she had no other choice but to do it.
She raised the knife, closed her eyes, and in a go, she stabbed him, and he screamed as his eyes immediately shot open.
“Daniel, I’m sorry.” She cried at him as he started to bleed from the stab.
“You did this?” He asked her, and she shook her head in tears.
“I have to save Kathryn; I’m so sorry.” She begged him as she rested her head on his chest. “Please forgive me!” She told him in tears.
“I’ll never forgive you for this, Kathryn, never!” He told her as he started to gasp, and it didn’t take long before he closed his eyes.
The moment he closed his eyes, hers widened in shock as she placed her head to his chest again, and now his heart was no longer beating. She shook her head. “No, this couldn’t be happening.
What had she just done? “Daniel, please wake up. Daniel!” She screamed in tears.
“Kathryn! Kathryn! Are you okay?” She heard a voice asking her as she was shaken, and she shook her head only to see Daniel holding on to her.
She stared at him, shocked, as she moved back, falling off the bed. She stared at him, and he didn’t have a wound from the stab.
“Are you alright? You’ve been calling my name since.” He told her, and she wiped her tears immediately.
It had all been a dream!
