“Tell me, Eva. What was that? Why were you looking at him that way?” James asked her, and she crossed her legs in front of him as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
She took out a pack of cigarettes from her bag as she started to smoke.
“There’s something about him; he is different from all the men I’ve ever met.” She told him, and he chuckled as he took the seat opposite her.
“I hope it’s not what I’m thinking, because if it is, you’re just wasting your time. He is just a cool guy; these things don’t affect him. He is not the type for this.” James told her, and she shook her head.
“He has got to be. He could even be a playboy; who knows?” She asked with a smile, and he shook his head.
“He’s not even a playboy. He used to be a don, but now he’s not. He is an honest businessman now. I wonder what changed him.” James told her, and she shook her head.
“Don’t worry, I want him, and trust me, I’ll get him for myself. I have to get to work now; excuse me.” She told him, and with that, she left.
The moment she left, James chuckled. “Ridiculous of her to think she can ever win Daniel. I wonder if he even likes women anymore.”
.
Daniel walked into the garden as he stared at the sky. He didn’t know what to think anymore. He loved her; he knew he did, and these things weren’t what he wanted for her.
All he wanted was to just confess his love to her, and then she’d accept and they’d be a couple, but with their many secrets, he didn’t think that was possible.
He sighed. “Why are you doing this, Kathryn? You’ve turned me into this now; you’ve turned me into a man who doesn’t even trust you, not as a friend, employee, or even someone deserving to be loved.” He spoke as he hurled his face into his hands, memories of the blank file and James’ words coming to mind again.
Kathryn Wilson didn’t exist; no one had been born with that name. As much as he wanted to believe his friend was lying, he couldn’t. All her words from the past just didn’t let him believe his friend was a liar.
He kicked against the garden bench angrily. “Damn you!” He yelled in anger as he fell to the ground.
TWO DAYS LATER…
“Are you sure about that?” He asked Eva as he took the file from her, and she nodded.
“Yes, I did extra research about this, and the results still came out positive. You know, cases like this aren’t rare. You know, ones where you can’t get a single trace of the person. It’s not rare; in fact, it’s possible, 100 percent.” She told him, and he stared at her.
“What do you mean?” He asked her, hoping that perhaps Kathryn wasn’t a bad person like he thought she was.
“Take me, for instance; it wasn’t till I joined James in this job at seventeen that I actually became someone. I was born into a very poor family; they couldn’t take my mom to the hospital when I was born, so she gave birth at home, and as such, I didn’t have a birth certificate. Two years later, my family began to have some money, and my mom died. The others left me alone, along with my dad and that drunkard. He was a gambler too, and one day he hit it big. He managed to become so rich that he forgot he even had a daughter, and I was left to fend for myself. When I was born, I was named Jennifer Gomez, but with all that happened to me, it felt like that name was bad luck, so what did I do? I changed my name; I changed it to one that would bring me good luck, and look at me now.” She told him with a smile on her face, and he started to understand where she was headed.
He had been jumping to conclusions, and he didn’t want to do it again. “So tell me, what do you mean?” He asked her, and she chuckled as she took out a file.
“That’s a file for Jennifer Gomez; she doesn’t exist. Even though I’m her, it states that she doesn’t exist because she was never registered. What I’m trying to say is that Kathryn Wilson could be like that. Maybe she never got registered, but unlike me, she never changed her name.” She told him, and he stared at her.
As he stared at her, he started to feel dizzy, and that was because he had too much to drink.
“Are you alright?” She asked him as she started to lead him to his car.
“Leave me; I’m fine.” He told her as he pushed her away, and she clenched her fists as she stared at him.
“Fine, go home yourself.” She told him, and he scoffed.
What a fool!
.
“Godfather, please. Don’t do this to me, I beg of you!” Kathryn screamed in tears as the hot iron rod was brought closer to her legs, which were now tied upside down.
She had received torture for a lifetime in just one day, but it didn’t seem to be enough for the godfather, as he wanted to punish her more.
“You’re a spy, Kathryn. You had just one job, and that was to get to Daniel Lopez and his godfather and then kill them. But what did you do? You fell for him!” He yelled as he pressed the iron against her skin while she cried out in pain and agony.
“Kill me instead; just please, let her go. Let Daniel be, please. He is a good person.” She cried out as he continued to hit her.
“You have till tonight, Kathryn. Kill Daniel, or watch me kill her.” He told her, and her eyes, which had now run dry of tears, widened in shock.
“Please don’t; I beg of you, don’t hurt her. She is just a child.” She cried out in pain, and he chuckled.
“We’ll then have no extension of deadlines. End him today.” He told her, and with that, he cut the ropes, causing her to fall to the ground.
