As he lay on his bed to sleep, all he could think about was Kathryn. She was hiding a lot from him, and it hurt him to know this. He ran his fingers through his hair as he got off his bed. Where could she have gotten those injuries from? It was fine if she didn’t trust him enough to actually tell him things; he didn’t have a problem with it, but what he wasn’t fine with were those injuries.
What sort of monster would do that to her? Whoever it was, they surely didn’t have any conscience to be willing to do something like that to her. He took a deep inhale. It was raining, and it was very cold.
He knew he couldn’t go to sleep without making sure she was fine, but then she was in the rain, and from what he had come to know about her, she really loved being in the rain. He sighed, “I just hope whatever you’re hiding from me won’t ruin our friendship, Kathryn. I’ve gone through betrayal a lot in life, and it has even come from family. I won’t be able to take it if the woman I love also betrays me.” He told himself as he closed his eyes, forcing himself to drift to sleep.
He groaned on the bed as he slowly moved. His hand was still hurting, but not as bad as it had been the previous day, and he took a deep inhale. He ran his fingers through his hair as he stared at the wall clock; it was already past ten.
“Damn!” He cursed under his breath. How could he have slept for so long? He sighed. The doctor did tell him that the drugs would make him feel very sleepy. Maybe that was the main reason he had slept so much.
He shook his head as he got off the bed, going straight to the bathroom to freshen up. After getting dressed, he decided to order food. Kathryn wouldn’t be able to cook, not in that condition, and even if she wanted to, there was no way he would ever allow her to.
He sighed as he walked out of the room. He had left her in the rain the previous night and, as such, didn’t know if she was even able to sleep. He stood outside her door. “Kathryn!” He called as he knocked.
“Come, I’ll order breakfast. You’ll have to eat, and then we’ll go to the hospital to check up on your wounds.” He said as he knocked, but then didn’t get any response.
He furrowed his brows. Even if she was asleep, she wasn’t such a deep sleeper that he would be knocking so much and she wouldn’t respond.
“Are you in there?” He asked as he continued to knock, and after knocking for some time without getting any response, he walked into the room, and that was it; the room was exactly the way it was the previous day.
He dashed out of the house immediately, and there, in the garden, he found her laying on the floor. He rushed to her immediately. “Kathryn!” He called. What was she doing there?
Didn’t she say she would go in after enjoying the weather? He placed his hand on her, and the moment he did that, he realized how feverish she was feeling.
He tapped her face as he called out to her, but then she didn’t wake up. Due to the rain, all the treatments he had done for her wounds were of no use as they had been washed away.
He rolled his eyes as he immediately carried her inside the house, calling for the doctor straight up as he placed her on his bed. He rubbed her hands as he stared at her.
What was she doing all night in the rain, and how did this happen to her? He took a deep breath as he stared at her. “Oh my, she seems to be getting worse by the second.” He spoke as he called the doctor again, but this time, the doctor didn’t take his call.
Before he could make out what was happening, there was a knock at the door, and the moment he opened the door, it was the doctor. He heaved a sigh of relief as he led the doctor to Kathryn immediately.
“There she is, doctor. I don’t know; she hasn’t regained consciousness since this morning.” He told the doctor, who nodded his head as he examined her.
“She has a fever, and it’s severe. This kind doesn’t just come with the rain, Mr. Lopez. It’s something else.” He told Daniel, who stared at him, shocked and even more confused.
“What do you mean?” He asked the doctor, who chuckled slightly.
“Sir, first of all, from what I’m seeing, she has been sick for some time now. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress. Hold on, I’ll check her.” He said that, and Daniel stood there.
What could be wrong with her?
“Tell me, sir. How did she sustain these wounds? Was she in a fight?” The doctor asked him, and he shook his head.
“I don’t know; she refused to tell me how she got those wounds.” He told the doctor, who nodded.
After examining Kathryn, he got off the bed. “Here are some drugs for her; I’ll take her samples to the hospital and then check what is wrong with her. I should get back to you in a few hours, or even minutes.” He told Daniel, who nodded as he shook his hand.
“Thank you, doctor.” He told the doctor, who nodded.
“You’re welcome, sir.” He said that, and with that, he walked to the door.
The moment Daniel returned to the room, he walked to the bed as he caressed her hair slowly. “What’s wrong with you, Kathryn? Why do I feel like I don’t even know you?” He asked a sleeping Kathryn.
For the next few hours, she still didn’t regain consciousness, and even though he was worried, the doctor told him she would be fine. He sighed; he didn’t even leave her side for once, as he was afraid she would need something when she woke up.
After some time, the doctor called to inform him of the results.
“Tell me, doctor, what’s wrong with her?” He asked the doctor.
“Pneumonia and a little bit of poisoning.” The doctor said that, and he staggered back in shock.
