“You’ve gone through a lot more than the rest of us could Emily.” Kelvin chuckled out as he ran a hand through his hair, completely taken aback with her story as she nodded at his words with a shrug of her shoulders.
“Well I ran away from it eventually, so there’s no saying I was strong enough to endure it like someone else would.” She chuckled and Kelvin shook his head in denial.
“I would have probably always been crying every single day. Plus the fact that you managed to escape a rapist, that’s…. Really something not many four year olds could run away from.” He pointed out as she smiled slightly with a small nod of her head.
“Well, I was so used to being beaten up so I just assumed he wanted to hurt me, that’s why I ran away.” She chuckled out lowly. “I knew it was bad, but not many four year olds could think it was bad before it hurts them.”
“Didn’t your parents ever ask about you?” He asked as she clenched his fists. “I mean… Do you think they tried looking for you one day?”
“I doubt they did.” She shrugged her shoulders and glanced up at the ceiling, feeling her stomach tighten at the thought. “They never got a divorce but both went their separate ways and none of them wanted to have a child tagging along. My father just doesn’t know I had been given up though, maybe he still thinks I’m with my mother somewhere. But he wouldn’t care much. It’s been a lot of years, he would have found out then.”
“What if he tried looking for you?” He asked with a softer tone, not wanting to sound off. “Would you forgive him if he apologized?” With that question, she glanced away and clenched her jaw.
Despite the fact that her father was also brutal, he wasn’t that intense as her mother, he wasn’t usually around to beat her up anyway. He was usually at work and his women. He would mostly threaten her and that was it.
“I wouldn’t forgive either of them.” She shook her head in denial as she clenched her jaw tightly. “Not even as they die.”
“Why not?” Kelvin asked. “What if they are truly sorry for what they did? What if they regret every second of the day they spent beating you up and want to love you as their child?”
“Because they accused me of being the cause of their problems. They accused a child that they brought to his world. They hated a child that they themselves made and forced into this world. I didn’t ask to be born, it just happened and being punished for being born is hurtful and very painful to bear.” She hissed out as she glared at Kelvin who was completely taken aback. “A four year old didn’t understand what she did wrong. She just wanted to have a father and mother that cared about her, but she was so used to being tortured that she didn’t even know what being loved even meant. She didn’t want the toys she begged for, or any of the fancy clothes, she just wanted her mother and father to hug her and tell her everything was going to be okay.” She sighed out as she glanced towards the ground. “My parents now gave me more than I had asked for. Then Jason showed up, someone I wouldn’t call family, so I easily fell in love with him.” She shrugged her shoulders as Kelvin nodded slowly and stood up from the couch.
“We should get going if we need to find Jason. Come on, Emily.” He smiled weakly as she glanced up at him.
“Jason wants to divorce me.” Melanie suddenly pointed out as she stood from the couch and glanced down at Emily who widened her eyes in terror. “Is it because of you?”
“N-No!” Emily stammered as she stepped back, too afraid to stare into her eyes directly. “He told me before anything happened.”
“He thinks I’m a selfish woman.” She chuckled out, pinching the bridge of her nose as she leaned on the armrest of the couch with a smirk on her lips. “He thinks I’m materialistic. Maybe I am. Maybe he’s just not good enough of a man to keep a woman expensive as me.” She laughed out hysterically as she walked around the room, throwing her arms around the place. “Did he promise to marry you Emily?” She asked with an odd smile on her face as she walked to Emily, only to have Kelvin step in between them, stopping her from getting closer to Emily.
“Don’t get that close, you look like you could choke her.” Kelvin hissed as he glared down at Melanie who sighed with a roll of her eyes. “Plus he didn’t promise her anything. I heard he just rushed out of the mansion in the morning before Emily got up. Probably trying to avoid her. That’s why we’re looking for him.” Kelvin explained as Melanie raised her brows at him.
“I’m surprised you’re helping her with another man who might actually steal her from you.” She said as she placed her arms on her hips with furrowed brows. “You do realize you could lose?”
“Emily doesn’t really like me that much right now. If Jason can tell her he’s not into her then she will probably come to me.” He grinned out as Emily furrowed her brows at him but didn’t say a thing, knowing too well Melanie would try to strangle her if she defended Jason and claims he loves her.
“You’re so confident it irritates me.” Melanie sighed out, running a hand through her hair as she glanced around the room. “Jason may sound like a Knight in shining armor, Emily.” Melanie started as she turned to Emily who raised her brows. “You like him because he acts really nicely around you. But Jason is a really unreadable man, so don’t be surprised when he lets you down like he’s done to me right now. Marry Kelvin, he’s your age, Jason’s lived much longer than the both of you to know how things work in life. You’re just children. You shouldn’t be falling in love with an older man right now.”
“It’s okay.” Emily shrugged her shoulders with an assuring smile on her lips. “I don’t really mind…” She paused she was just about to start blabbering out about Jason.
