EPISODE HUNDRED AND FORTY SEVEN
THEME: Right suspicion
MOON STONE FORTRESS
“Why isn’t he picking?” Claire grumbled as she bit hard on her lips.
She had been trying to reach Rex since dinner ended but as always he wasn’t exactly picking her calls. Claire couldn’t blame him, she was known to keep dropping messages that appears disturbing to Rex. He was still not respondent on her intention towards him.
However, it was entirely different this time around. Deep within her, she feels unsettled which was really new to her. The need to ensure she was just being paranoid for nothing nagged at the back of her mind.
‘Oh my goodness, I thought you would never pick up!’ Claire said, sounding relieved when Rex voice came in.
Rex rolled his eyes on the other end. ‘My schedule is quite tight, Claire. Why are you calling me this late night?’
‘I have something important to tell you and I promise it has nothing to do with me. Please.’
After a long pause he finally replied. ‘Do you need me to come over to the pack house?’
‘That would be really nice, thank you. It’s quite urgent please.’
The call ended leaving Rex in a state of discomfort. He had been trying to ignore Claire’s call, but her persistence had made him give in. There was a whole lot that he had been trying to sort, something didn’t feel right with the extreme silence around the Fortress coupled with the fact that Jayden was in cohort with the Rogues. It has been more than two weeks since he left the Fortress. Being the Alpha source of information, Rex knew there was no way he could act on impulse and to avoid causing any unnecessary trouble.
Deciding to heed Claire’s call, he got into his car and drove down to the pack house. Claire was waiting outside for him, judging by her look he could tell whatever she had to say wasn’t really about her. As he neared her, he took his time to admire her features. Claire indeed is beautiful and she is the exact female version of her brothers. Good looks definitely runs in their gene. Shaking his head, he tried to clear the images trying to form in his head.
“Don’t do this, Rex.” He cautioned himself.
The moment Rex parked the car, Claire jumped in the front seat like a gangster that she wasn’t. Rex had an amused look on his face. “This isn’t actually a fast and furious game. Did you have to jump at the car like that?”
She raised a stern brow, making his grin fall into an uncomfortable clearing of throat.
“I don’t want anyone to notice us meeting up cause they might rebuke me for what I am about to do. But I have never felt this certain about something and my wolf instincts don’t go wrong when they keep insisting on something.”
Rex sat up now, realizing the situation isn’t exactly as he had envisioned. “What’s going on Claire?”
Claire sniffed. She pulled out her phone and she tapped on what appeared to be a video and showed it to Rex. It was Juno searching through the deep shelves fervently, while turning her head around to ensure no one was coming in.
“What exactly is hidden in that study? This is the second time I have seen her lurking around, looking extremely tensed. I would have ignored it, but Juno has never been interested in going to the study coupled with the fact that only my closest family and people like you go into it the most. The first time I had told Jaylen about it, he downplayed it. I am not usually a poke nose but she was too obvious.”
Rex tried to think of what might possibly be of interest to Juno in there. His eyes shone when it clicked after some minutes of silence. “Fuck! The Map of the Fortress Secret Passage is kept in the study!”
Claire stared in confusion at him. “Why would Juno want that?”
“She is the Fortress warrior! But hold on…what the hell is going on? It can’t possibly be that she is trying to hurt the Fortress.” Rex added.
“So, what do you think we should do now?”
“Do my duty as it is. I need to be sure it is the secret map she is really after. You can go back in Claire, I would call you to let you know whatever I find.”
Claire shook her head as she got out of the car. Her heart beat pace increased as the suspicions were beginning to appear strong and she hoped it wouldn’t breed another trouble for her family.
Driving through the path that leads to the Force Base, Rex tried to find a way to catch up with her. Checking his time, it was just past nine which meant if Juno would still be at the force she would be clocking out around ten. Rex picked up his phone to dial someone.
‘Is Juno still around the base?’ He said into the receiver.
‘She clocked out a bit early, said she needed to be out of the Fortress for some family deals.’
‘What time?’
‘Around six.’
Rex thought for a moment, that must be when she had gone for dinner at the pack house. ‘Thanks.’ He said before hanging up.
He dialed Claire again. ‘What time did dinner end at your place?’
‘We didn’t finish until about 8:45 p. m.’ Claire responded.
‘What time did Juno leave?’
“I wouldn’t be certain, but I do know she was kept in for a while by my mom. I left them after that. Is everything okay? Did you find anything?’
‘Not yet, I would get back to you.’
Rex turned on the ignition and made his way towards Juno’s home. He hoped he catches her on time. He got near the house just in time to find Juno about to head out. She had on a black hoodie and trousers and before getting into her car, her eyes scanned the entire area. Rex tried to stay as discreet as he can.
The moment Juno stepped onto the pedal and headed towards the road leading out of the Fortress, Rex knew it was the right time to follow her. He ensured his light wasn’t giving him away. He followed behind her, hoping for the good of the both of them that Juno wasn’t up to something image tarnishing. The last thing he needed was to have to prosecute someone respected in the Fortress.
