Chapter 260: Testing

“What was I thinking?”
After getting off work and returning home, Elise rubbed her forehead. She didn’t know why she had these two thoughts. One was her constant feeling that Mr. X could solve everything, an inexplicable belief.
The second was her constant feeling that Mr. X was Robin.
The first seemed possible, but the second seemed very unrealistic.
The probability was too small.
“Never mind, we’ll test it tonight.”
Elise shook her head, having worked all day. When she couldn’t figure it out, she went straight upstairs to find her daughter, preparing for the upcoming ball.
At this time, Karen came upstairs, cautiously entering the room and said with a smile, “Elise.”
Ever since the last time Karen betrayed Elise, she was always very careful around Elise, fearing that Mr. X would come knocking again.
“Mom, what’s up?”
Although Karen had betrayed Elise last time, she was still her mother, so Elise didn’t hold a grudge and still affectionately called her ‘Mom.’
“Elise, are you going to the ball tonight? I heard that Mr. X is attending too. Let me tell you, last time it was Mr. X who saved you, Robin just took advantage of the situation. From that incident, you can see the difference in their abilities and their love for you.”
“Mr. X truly loves you, otherwise he wouldn’t have offended so many people for you, and protected you time and time again. He even gave you a luxury car, didn’t he?”
“As for Robin, he’s disappeared and probably won’t come back. What use is a husband like that? At tonight’s ball, you must seize the opportunity. Don’t worry, I’ll handle Robin. I’ll make sure he doesn’t dare set foot in this house again.”
Karen said excitedly.
Though she was frightened by Mr. X last time, she realized this might be a good thing. If Mr. X really fancied her daughter, then that would be something. Mr. X was a big figure in Stillwater, far better than someone like Penn Wraith.
He could buy her many, many designer bags!
Such a son-in-law was the ideal partner for her daughter.
However, despite her long speech, Elise just calmly looked at her. Karen felt a bit uneasy and hurriedly asked, “Elise, what do you…”
“Mom, I haven’t forgotten about last time,” Elise said slowly. As soon as she spoke, the atmosphere between the two of them became quiet. After all, what happened last time was real, but Elise hadn’t mentioned it because they were mother and daughter. However, this time, Elise had to bring it up.
Upon hearing this, Karen felt embarrassed. “I’ll come back next time.” Frightened at the thought of Mr. X coming to settle the score with her again, Karen hastily retreated, not wanting to offend Elise any further.
“Ah,” sighed Elise, shaking her head and deciding not to pay her mother any more attention.
“Come on, sweetheart, I bought you a little dress. Let’s put it on and go to a ball tonight, okay?” Elise took out a small dress.
“Okay.” Leslie, like a doll, didn’t know what a ball was, but if her mom said they were going, then they would go. She immediately raised her hands in agreement, but then asked, “Will Dad be there this time? Leslie misses Dad.”
“He should be there,” Elise replied.
“Yay! I’ll get to see Dad again,” Leslie exclaimed, not understanding the nuances of adult speech. To her, “should” meant he would definitely be there, so she was very happy and excited.
“Uh… never mind.” It was then that Elise realized she had misspoken. The ball was for people associated with Lamonia Security and Mr. X; there was no way Robin would be there. She didn’t even know where he was at the moment. However, seeing Leslie so happy, Elise didn’t say anything more.
An hour later, Elise and Leslie set off. When they reached the entrance, two cars happened to meet – a red Porsche and a black Jeep. Elise was in the Porsche and Robin was in the Jeep.
“Boss,” Elise recognized the license plate and greeted him.
Then the Jeep sped away and even changed direction.
“What’s going on?” Miranda, who had joined them halfway, was also in the car, dumbfounded by the scene. Elise had greeted Mr. X, who then sped away without even rolling down the window, changing direction as he fled. This was strange.
“See, I told you, Mr. X is really avoiding me,” Elise shrugged and pouted helplessly. It was true; several times when it was her turn to see Mr. X, something would happen and she wouldn’t get to see him. He was definitely avoiding her, but she had no idea why or how she had offended him.
“Don’t overthink it. Maybe Mr. X has some business to take care of over there. What kind of person is he to be avoiding you? Let’s not worry about it and find a place to park,” Miranda forcefully explained, but by the end, even she began to doubt herself. This really seemed like Mr. X was avoiding Elise, for no apparent reason.
At that moment, in the Jeep parked in a completely opposite location, Robin was smoking a cigarette, his eyes filled with mixed emotions. He had just seen his wife, but unfortunately couldn’t approach her. Otherwise, he would have loved to give her a passionate kiss. He missed her terribly.
“Sir, actually…” Jeff Reczek wanted to say something.
“No need for ‘actually.’ We only have one day left. Tomorrow everything will be revealed.” Tomorrow was the day Mr. X would destroy the three families of Stillwater. Those so-called monsters hiding in the shadows would come out, and he could finally go home. It had been almost seven days since he left home, and it was about time.
“By the way, has Walter Wraith made any moves?” Robin asked.
“Yes, and big ones. He sent his son abroad, using all his connections and even foreign forces. We couldn’t intercept him,” Jeff Reczek said, somewhat frustrated. This was considered a mission failure.
But Robin didn’t dwell on it. Walter Wraith had been operating in Stillwater for many years. Sending someone away was certainly within his capabilities. As long as Walter Wraith himself didn’t leave, it was fine.
“Sending away his only son… Walter Wraith, are you preparing for a desperate fight? Or are you giving up resistance? Still, I tend to think you’ll fight, because after all, you’re a genius.”
