Chapter 121 The Manipulator

Book:The Warlord Is Back Published:2024-5-31

Robin used to be homeless, but he had never been so lousy. Instead, he worked hard by collecting used water bottles and garbage to exchange some money.
He had two outfits, one belonging to himself, and the other was found in the garbage can. He had worn them for several years. Although broken, they were clean and tidy.
However, the beggars on the scene were dirty, as if they had never taken baths or changed their clothes. They were bony due to starvation. Lying on the floor, they stared at the sky in a daze.
They were all like zombies.
Robin didn’t intend to rescue them. First, he wasn’t THAT idle. Second, those beggars had already given up on themselves. They were healthy and grownups. Even if they worked as civil workers, they wouldn’t be hungry to death.
Robin didn’t think they were worth his compassion.
He tossed the man in the lead to the ground. The latter had been injured by Robin’s punches earlier. When he fell to the ground, he cried in pain.
“Stop howling! Who sent you here?”
Robin pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag.
The cherry on the cigarette was evident in the dark. Other beggars feared following them as they had no guts to do anything without the leader.
That was also Robin’s experience of being homeless before.
Elise used many measures to send them away, including offering them money. However, she failed because the beggars’ leader disagreed.
Once a beggar took the money and left, he would be beaten to death as long as he stayed in Stillwater. That was a rule among the vagabonds.
Therefore, Elise should have targeted the leader.
A while later, the man in the lead stopped howling. “No one sent us here. We came here ourselves,” the leading vagabond squeezed an answer between his teeth after exhaling to release his pain.
The next second, Robin stamped on one of his fingers violently. The sharp pang made the man wail mournfully again, “Argh! I… I’ll tell the truth…”
After all, he was a beggar and couldn’t tolerate much pain.
Robin seemed not to hear him. He took a drag of the cigarette, lifted his foot, and stamped on another finger of the beggar’s hand. The beggar cried piteously again.
“Argh!”
His face paled because of the severe pain, cold sweat oozing from his forehead. While howling, he begged, “I’m sorry, mister… I’ll tell you the truth… I will…”
Unfortunately, Robin ignored him. He lifted his foot and stamped on his third finger.
“Help!” the man cried out extremely loudly this time.
All the beggars waiting on the construction site heard it, their eyes full of fear.
However, they felt more frightened to check on them.
“I broke your three fingers. It’s the punishment for delaying my wife’s project. Now, tell me. Who sent you here? Make it clear. You still have seven fingers left,” Robin squatted down and said.
His words made the beggar tremble, his eyes full of horror. He realized the young man was a demon. To be exact, eviler than a demon.
The beggar’s three fingers had become bloody, all disabled.
However, Robin threatened to break the rest fingers.
The beggar dared not to fight back or lie. He stammered, “I… I don’t know who exactly. He asked me to report the status to her tomorrow. He stays in a small villa.”
“You don’t know who he is. Tomorrow?” Robin repeated, rubbing his chin.
No matter who the manipulator was, he aimed to make trouble for Elise. Anyone who wanted to harm Elise was Robin’s foe. He was indeed protective of his wife.
“How much did he pay you?” Robin asked.
He knew those vagabonds were driven by money.
“10, 000 dollars…” the leading beggar answered gingerly, gesturing the figure.
He was terrified by Robin as the latter was indeed a devil.
“10, 000 dollars? Well, I’ll give you a mission and pay you 20, 000 dollars. However, you must accomplish it successfully. Or you’ll lose the rest seven fingers.”
He violently intimidated the beggar but also offered him some reward., which was a frequently used tactic.
The leading beggar’s eyes lit up when he heard about 20, 000 dollars. However, Robin mentioned his seven fingers, and he shuddered visibly. He didn’t wish to obtain the 20, 000 dollars but only kept his rest fingers.
“Of course, you can refuse. However…”
Before Robin finished his words, the beggar nodded vigorously. “Mister, mister, I agree. I will do as you said. Please. Let me do it.”
He was afraid Robin would break his rest fingers immediately if he refused.
Then he would be tortured again.
“Good.”
Robin beamed at him, passed him a bank card, and returned home after telling him the mission.
The leading vagabond remembered the mission. Holding the bank card, he limped back to his companions.
“Our job has been changed. Someone gave me 10, 000 dollars. Let’s go to another place,” he said to other beggars.
He wanted to keep the rest 10, 000 dollars for his own. As in the last job, he told other beggars they had been offered 6, 000 dollars. Instead, he kept 4, 000 dollars himself.
That might be the reason why he had become their leader.
“OK,” his subordinates answered in weak tones.
However, the leading vagabond didn’t care. His subordinates were always like this. Therefore, he led them to enter a villa.
In the villa, David and Snowy were sitting on the couch. Holding a goblet with red wine, Snowy nodded at David and praised him, “I didn’t expect you to have such a trick, David. You sent the beggars over. I guess Elise must be scared.”
“I guess so, too.”
David sipped his wine with a triumphant smile.
A few days ago, Snowy updated him about Elise’s project status. David learned Landview Inc. had found engineers, employees, and funds.
Therefore, he couldn’t sit and watch without doing anything.
Once Elise’s new company succeeded, she would stabilize her position as chairwoman in Lands Corporation. In that case, David wouldn’t be able to replace her anymore.
Hence, he thought for several days and figured out a dirty trick.
He spent little money sending the vagabonds to make trouble for Elise. However, the beggars were willing to do it and delay the project.
Once the project couldn’t meet its milestones, Elise couldn’t accomplish it. Then she would be removed from the position of chairwoman.
In that case, David would naturally become the chairman of the board.
