“However, he didn’t know much. Someone asked him to drug Elise. However, after that, he was almost murdered, which scared him shitless. Therefore, he hurriedly left the town. Shortly after, he heard his coworker had died in jail, so he kept a lowkey life.”
“We used certain techniques to find his former phone number. One calling log was between him and David Houry. However, he couldn’t remember if David called him.”
Robin sent Jeff to find out the truth about the incident seven years ago, so Jeff did it. After several days, he only made little progress. After all, it had been such a long time that many clues had vanished.
“David Houry?”
Robin leaned against the back of the chair and put his legs on the desk. While shaking slightly, he added, “This matter must have something to do with David Houry, but he shouldn’t be the one sending the killer. He’s not that bold.”
The incident seven years ago was a riddle. Although the policeman had found the person who drugged Elise, they failed to find the manipulator behind it.
Robin wondered about the person’s purpose and why he set Elise up.
“Lands Corporation’s market value was over 2 billion dollars. After that incident happened, which companies benefited the most?” Robin asked.
“Many companies. Back then, Lands Corporation was one of the top 20 companies in Stillwater, with a promising future and countless internal innovations. If it had continued developing, it would have become one of the top five companies locally with great influence.”
“Therefore, after that incident, the top 20 companies in Stillwater benefited from it, and so did Hill Corporation. It suddenly became one of the top 10 enterprises locally. Earlier, they were just ranked among the top 40,” Jeff told Robin the details.
He had been pretty busy carrying on the investigation in the past few weeks.
“Keep on your investigation then. Check each one who benefited from this matter. Remember. Don’t expose my identity to avoid alerting the enemies.”
From the investigation results, Robin realized that the manipulator must have thought setting Elise up could benefit him and his company. Therefore, Robin let Jeff check the beneficiaries, hoping to find more details.
Besides, the enemies were in the dark, so Robin let Jeff investigate secretly, which was a common strategy in a war. If Robin was exposed by accident, he would either end the enemy’s life or scare him away.
However, both methods meant he made a mistake.
“Yes, Mr. Bailey,” Jeff answered, nodding vigorously.
“By the way, how about the aftermath of Lucas Corporation?” Robin asked.
He let Jeff handle it.
“I’ve finished everything. As you ordered, I also let Reginald Lucas go with his father. However, I found a woman checking us, especially you, General Bailey.”
Jeff recalled something.
“That woman, right?”
Robin turned around, drifted to the window, and pointed down at a woman sitting at a bus stop. Among the crowd, she looked pretty common.
“She wore a white hat. When I arrived at the company, she had been there. It’s been half an hour, and all the buses have passed, but she still hasn’t gotten on any. From time to time, she lowered her head and let the hat cover her expression. It’s an anti-reconnaissance means. Unfortunately, she isn’t cautious enough.”
Robin shook his head as the woman had exposed many flaws.
“Yes. That’s she.”
Jeff recognized that woman as he was also a military elite. He added, “The woman’s name is Lacey Willis, a policewoman of Stillwater police department. She’s short-tempered and has won first prizes in combats, armament drills, and gun-shooting competitions. Her team was the top team in accomplishing missions. She’s the captain of an individual special force team.”
“Her supervisor has reminded her not to get involved in certain things, but she still watches you. By the way, according to her profile, she was righteous with a strong sense of justice. She was the most famous policewoman in town,” Jeff continued.
“She’s an excellent policewoman but too young, too naive.”
Robin withdrew his gaze.
Later, he went downstairs and continued to work as a security guard. A quarter before knocking off, he went to the bus stop across the road, sitting on the bench at the bus stop.
A minute later, a young woman wearing a yellow t-shirt and denim shorts that exposed her long and fair legs walked over. She sat next to Robin.
Lacey was confused. According to her observation, Robin always got off work at six o’clock. However, he left his office 10 minutes earlier today.
She glanced at Robin and withdrew her gaze, faking being an ordinary passerby. She felt puzzled as she checked Robin’s background but failed to find anything. Instantly, she sensed something wrong.
Lacey thought Robin was a dandy with a unique background. However, she wouldn’t let him harm the people and society.
Therefore, Lacey studied Robin’s profile in the database. Although she was on vacation today, she purposely watched him. According to his profile, he went to work and got off from work consistently according to the required office hours, so he was never late for work or left early.
Much to her surprise, he left his office earlier than usual.
Lacey guessed something must be wrong.
As an excellent policewoman, she was detail-oriented. Suddenly, a voice sounded next to her, “Nothing special. My daughter wanted to try the donuts with new flavors, so I’ll make a detour to buy them before picking her up. I took a 10-minute off and knocked off earlier than usual. Calm down.”
His words explained why he had left his office earlier.
Suddenly, Lacey realized something as Robin took the initiative to explain it to her. She wondered if she had been exposed.
“Ehn. You are exposed.”
Robin sighed, “In the morning, you wore trousers and a white hat. Now you changed into shorts without a hat, and your hairstyle was also changed. Your disguise seemed to be successful, but you forgot one detail. You must have disguised yourself as a college student, right?”
“However, you didn’t wear anything that showed you were a college student, like a bracelet or a necklace. You should know a female college student usually has a boyfriend, so she pays a lot of attention to her appearance.”
“I guess it’s because you entered the police school for college and focused on studying all the time. You should have no boyfriend at college, so you didn’t pay attention to those details.”
“Am I right, Madam?”
Lacey almost stopped breathing upon hearing his words. She couldn’t believe that was how she had been exposed.
She won many first prizes over the years and was proud of herself. Therefore, she couldn’t accept that she had been exposed so easily.
However, Lacey realized something the next second and asked, “Wait a minute. What if I disguise myself as a college student from the police school bypassing here? Why didn’t you mention it? Or did you forget this possibility?” Lacey asked.
Robin stood up and darted at her. “I didn’t mention the possibility because I set you up to let you expose yourself.”
