“Mom!” Candace screamed the moment she saw Claire.
But the little girl soon stopped in her tracks. She frowned, taking a few steps back as she faced the woman.
Who was she? She was not Mom. But why did she look like Mom so much? Candace was anxious while staring at the woman before her.
The smile on Claire’s lips stretched. She walked forth and crouched down before the little girl, “What did you just call me, sweetie?”
“I… I’m sorry,” Candace hid behind Cody, “I recognized you as someone else.”
“It’s okay,” Claire almost cried as she finally got to see Cristelle’s babies after so many years, “What’s your name?”
Candace looked at Cody. Cody nodded.
Candace turned to Claire, “My name is Candace Bradley. Who are you? Are you Dad’s guest?”
“Yeah. My name is Selena,” Claire smiled warmly before she turned to look at Cody,
“What about you? What’s your name?
Cody nodded politely. “Cody. Nice to meet you.”
Frank was smiling as he was introduced to the babies. The dinner was served soon. After finishing the dinner, Candace took Claire upstairs to play puzzles.
Cody also followed.
Drew closed the door of the dining hall the moment they left. Frank knew it was time to talk. He turned toward Linford and cleared his throat, “Linford, you’ve already had two babies. Do you actually want to…”
“Yes. I don’t want any babies. Besides, the baby in Lana’s belly is not even mine. I can be sure we’ve never had sex. But why do the DNA test results suggest the opposite?” Linford asked.
Frank frowned.
Drew instantly said, “I swear that no one has ever changed the result, samples, or anything similar.”
“Well, if no one has ever rigged the result and you can be sure the baby is yours, Linford, allow me to ask you, do you have any identical twins?” Frank asked seriously.
Frank didn’t know many things about these big houses. He only cared about his experiments and patients.
Linford frowned a bit, “I did have a twin brother.”
Frank blinked, “Had?”
“Clyde passed away years ago. I don’t think he could get Lana pregnant.” Linford said grimly.
“Doctor Watson, know you’re one of the best. But you can’t make jokes like this. The baby can’t be Clyde’s,” Drew also said, looking a bit annoyed.
“Well, if the father is not your twin brother, then…. it can only be you if the result is authentic,” Frank sat back in his chair.
“I can be sure that I’ve never touched her. If the Father was my twin brother, could you use any medical means to prove it?” Linford quickly asked.
“I can do that. But it takes time and money,” Frank explained briefly.
“Good. Please try your best to find the result. Just take as much time and money as you need. I really need the real result,” Linford said genuinely.
Drew was still confused after Frank left the room, “Linford, are you sure you didn’t get anything? How could Clyde have a baby? He had gone for years. Are you sure you remember everything that happened after you got drunk that day?”
“Drew, you’re not getting foolish, are you? I’m your best friend, why can’t you trust me? I’m sure I did nothing to her. Clyde is the only possibility. I think he must have done something without telling us before he passed away.” Linford glared at Drew. He felt the truth was gonna be revealed soon.
Drew pouted, “But I was the one who collected the things he left behind. If something were wrong, I surely would have noticed that, wouldn’t I?”
“I want you to go back and find out if you had missed out on something back then. Would you do that for me?” Linford stared at him seriously.
Drew nodded before he left the room.
Meanwhile, on the second floor, Candace was playing puzzles with Claire, she didn’t even notice that Frank had entered the room.
Frank took his seat on the couch and looked at them with great interest. His eyes lingered on the little girl and Selena’s faces, wondering why their features shared so many similarities.
Cody knew the adults probably had finished their conversation the minute he saw the doctor. So he went downstairs to look for Linford. He accidentally heard Clyde’s name before Drew left the house.
Pop said Clyde had an accident when he was doing a mission. Could Clyde’s death have another cause? Dad surely sounded suspicious.
Cody walked into the room after he made sure Drew had left, “What were you guys talking about?” Cody asked, frowning.
“Doctor Watson is the most famous doctor in the world. We were discussing something about your second uncle a few minutes ago,” Linford mentioned calmly.
Cody took his seat on the tall chair, “Pop said Uncle Clyde had an accident when he was doing a mission. Is that the truth, or there’s something more?”
Linford looked grim, “I have a lot of doubts about your uncle’s death. But guess it had a lot to do with the grudge between the older generations. I hope you can stay out of this, Cody.”
He didn’t want anything dangerous to happen to Cody.
Cody wasn’t in the mood to banter with him today. He could understand how protective Linford was over him, his sister, and his Mom. He understood how difficult it must be. But he still couldn’t help asking. “Does Uncle Clyde’s death have anything to do with Mom?”
Cody was a genius. Linford knew he would never be able to hide anything away from him. He’d rather Cody was as simple and happy as Candace was. But clearly, he would never act like any normal five-year-old.
“Yes. That’s why these problems are so tricky. But you don’t need to worry about anything, Cody. I will take care of it,” Linford promised.
“Don’t underestimate me. I can probably help you,” Cody didn’t want to be protected. His Mom was in danger right now, and he just had to do something.
Linford knew the boy wouldn’t walk away without being a helper. So he sighed, “Fine.. I’ll give you a task then.”
He lowered his body and whispered in the boy’s ear.
After hearing what Linford said, Cody nodded heavily, “Of course. I can do that for you.”
