“I heard you’re leaving, so I came to see you off,” Maxwell sighed, looking at her with a very affectionate gaze. “So thin, you’ve really suffered all these years.”
Callie frowned. “How did you know I was leaving?”
“… I heard.”
Maxwell smiled faintly. Although it was hard to discern, Callie understood most of it.
She trusted Regan, so it must have been Sienna who told them. They saw the letter…
Seeing Callie’s momentary sadness, Maxwell added, “My brother and sister-in-law aren’t well, so they sent me to see you off. Don’t overthink it; they care about you.”
Care about her… yet they didn’t even dare to see her in person.
Callie’s lips curved slightly. She couldn’t quite describe her feelings. Even if they met, what would she say? She didn’t know herself.
But she never imagined she wouldn’t see them at all. They… really weren’t coming to the airport.
“There’s ten million dollars in here,” Maxwell said sincerely, handing her a card he took from his bag. “My sister-in-law asked me to give it to you. Take care of yourself out there.”
Callie was stunned for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh. She didn’t even want the Ellison family’s assets; why would she want this ten million?
“Ten million?”
“Is it not enough?” Maxwell asked instinctively. “If it’s not, we can…”
“It’s enough,” Callie interrupted, feeling dazed as she took the card.
“That’s good. They’re doing this for your own good. Don’t take it to heart. Accepting it will put their minds at ease.”
A gleam flashed under Maxwell’s gold-rimmed glasses.
“Very thoughtful,” Callie nodded, then raised her hand and snapped the card in half, handing it back to Maxwell. “Thank them for me.”
Maxwell stood there in shock. “You…”
The boarding announcement echoed through the waiting room, reminding passengers of the flight’s departure time.
“If you get the chance, tell them to consider me nonexistent in this world.”
With that, Callie walked straight towards the boarding bridge, her figure thin and empty.
The plane took off at night, circling above Ylosea a few times. Through the window, she could see the bustling night scene outside. This was the city where she had lived for over a decade. Leaving it now, there was no turning back.
The Oconnor Group building in the city center was particularly noticeable, its lights shining the brightest at night, gradually becoming a dot in her vision before disappearing completely.
Perhaps due to her bad mood, Callie’s stomach churned suddenly. She held back for a while before she didn’t throw up.
She closed the window shade, plunging her view into darkness.
Meanwhile, at Oconnor Group, Nelson sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, his broad back lonely, his heart desolate.
Anthony entered hesitantly. “Mr. Oconnor, the plane has taken off.”
Nelson slowly closed his eyes.
She had left after all. From now on, no one in this world would understand his loneliness at the top. No one would be willing to give up everything to embrace his solitude.
Suddenly, his wrist vibrated, followed by the sound of beads scattering on the floor.
Anthony was taken aback.
The prayer beads had suddenly broken.
The beads she gave him for peace had broken without warning on the night she left.
After several seconds, Nelson suddenly went madly to pick up the beads. He knelt on the ground, clutching them as if holding onto his life…
“Don’t go…”
