Mary Davies
My mum has refused to talk to me since this morning ordeal. I felt like a thief even though I didn’t steal anything.
But you stole Apples.
Yes, I agree with my conscience. I took Apples. I didn’t steal them, but I was accused of stealing them.
As I helped my mum make lunch for the Andrew’s in laws. I felt like I dirty rag. Everyone believes I stole, even my own mother believes I stole the jewelries. I know this was a set up. Jessica doesn’t even like me. I sighed heavily as I diced the potatoes on the chopping board.
I was being careful around my mum. I was hoping to open up to her about everything that happened between I and Hawk, but that would only ruin my relationship with her. She will feel so betrayed, having a thief and a slut as a daughter.
I groaned out loud, I didn’t mean to, but I was feeling pressed. If I don’t use the toilet, I might end up peeing myself. I have noticed my frequent peeing since yesterday and to be honest, it scares me a lot. I checked online for what might be the cause, and what I have been seeing was really scaring me. UTI is said to happen during sexual activity when bacteria from a partner’s genitals, fingers is pushed into the urethra. My phone is with my mum now, and I won’t even be able to read more on it.
“Just go, I will finish up here.” My mum said as soon as she noticed my predicament. I dashed off immediately, hurrying towards my mum’s room.
I only want to relieve myself and get back to the kitchen to keep assisting my mum. But immediately I sighted Jessica and her brother, Hawk. I knew trouble was looming. They were both standing at the stairway. It was like they were both waiting for me.
My hands became sweaty immediately, I know going to the kitchen won’t help me, because my bladder is on fire already. And still I have to pass the senior and junior tormentor. I walked past the both of them, I was holding my breath as I passed.
“And here she is, the thief of Baghdad.” I heard Jessica say in between laughter. I paused a bit and continued climbing the stairs.
“What do you mean?” Hawk asked his sister.
“She stole my Jewelries brother, I don’t know why mum keeps harboring thieves in our house. There is no doubt that are mother is also a thief, poor people are losers. And they should be treated like one, they should be feeding on our leftovers and be leaving outside this mansion.” Jessica replied her brother.
I was angry she called my mum a thief, that was really insensitive and I really can’t stand that.
“My mum isn’t a thief.” I said, turning around to face the siblings.
“Did I hear the fool say something?” Jessica teased.
“I can stand it if you call me a thief, but I won’t stand you calling my mum a thief.” I gritted out through my teeth.
“Oh yeah. You can stand that, because you are simply a thief. But listen to me, if your mum isn’t a thief. What is she? A slut?”
That made me see red, my mum! A slut!
“I know you lack manners Jessica, obviously you are a rich-spoilt brat who doesn’t know the difference between the good and wrong. I’m not surprised by your rude behavior and I don’t blame you.”
“And who do you blame?” I heard the familiar voice of Mrs Andrews behind me. I kept quiet immediately. This was not good.
“I never thought you were like this Mary Davies, what a chameleon. You change skin, I’m surprised I am seeing different types of the real Mary Davies. So, you have been pretending. I didn’t know you were thief, but I found out today. It’s nice to know you are a bully too. Don’t ever talk to my daughter like that. You should know your place in this mansion. You are a maids daughter and that makes you a maid also.”
“I could withdraw your scholarship or even throw you and your mother to the streets, but I won’t. There is no harm in giving you another chance. Be careful, do not test my patience. I’m having an important guests today. Don’t ruin this for me.” Mrs Andrews said, unshed tears blinded my eyes. I never thought Mrs Andrews was going to ever be like this. I was just reminded of how worthless I am.
“What is happening here?” I heard my mum’s voice.
“Your daughter here refused to apologise for her crime of theft, instead she is here bullying me because I asked for an apology.” Jessica said, pretending to cry. I gasped loudly. She was lying, the look on my mum’s face prevented me from saying anything.
“Apologize to the young girl. Now!” My mum commanded. I sank my teeth into my lips. This wasn’t fair. Hawk was here, he saw everything that happened, but he chose to keep mute.
“I am sorry, I apologize for everything you claimed I did.” I whispered softly.
“It’s okay,” Jessica said, sniffing.
“I apologize for what my daughter did ma’am. It’s all my fault. I failed as a mother.” My mum said, kneeling. Seeing my mum stooping so low before her employee made my heart sink.
“It is okay. Just make sure you don’t forget your place here. My guest will be here soon. Be ready.” Mrs Andrews said, walking away.

The guests were around, Mr Andrews finally came out of his study. The guests were important people. All I could gather was that the betrothal was all business, like a contract marriage to match the Andrews business with his in laws business. It was decided already. Hawk was going to marry the daughter of this important guests and take over the company.
Mum excused me, I know she was only trying to avoid me. It was evident she didn’t want to have anything to do with me at this moment. She was also trying to please Mrs Andrews.
I stayed behind, I avoided the dinning area and crept to the garden. The garden was quite, and that is what I needed. Solitude, peace of mind.
I inhaled the cool air as I raised my head up, staring at the misty cloud. I wish we were rich, truly if Mrs Andrews should withdraw the scholarship, it would be hard for me to finish up high school or even go to college. I really don’t want to be drop out. I have a lot of things to achieve in this life. I won’t ever let my kids go through all what I’m currently going through. I am going to work really hard. This is a hard time for my mum and I.
To achieve these things I know I have to set up plans I have to work on. Maybe looking for a part-time job might help, I was kind of frustrated because I hate being in tight position. One thing I learned from my dad was preparing a second choice. I have been depending on the Andrews and I knew having a second choice in case things don’t go well was the best thing to do at this moment.
But I was blank, I have no idea on what to do.
“Hey.” A voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked towards the direction to find a youngcyoung boy standing in front of me. He has a ginger hair and dust of freckles were splattered under his eyes. He was probably lost, his long legs made him look old.
“Hello.” I whispered.
“Is this your garden?” He asked, pouting his lips.
“No,” I replied.
“Adam,” I heard a tiny voice call out.
“Over here.” The boy replied. Just then, a girl with a peach dinner dress appeared. She looked kind of familiar. I rubbed my eyes and looked again. I gasped.
“Taylor.” I shouted.
“Oh my goodness, Mary Davies.” She whispered, eyeing my dress. Yes, I was still dressed in the maid uniform.
“Do you leave here?” She asked, scrunching up her face.
“Yes, I work here also. What happened, you just disappeared. I heard you moved away.” I replied.
“Yes, I travelled with my mum to get some works done on my body.” I immediately checked her out, Taylor wasn’t thick as she used to be. Did she do a surgery, I thought. I didn’t want to say an offensive word or stare too much.
“Is there a reason why you are here?” I asked curiously. She suddenly scoffed and flipped her hair.
“I’m betrothed to Hawk Andrews.” She said proudly, I thought she hated him and was scared of him.
“It happens that his parents needs my parents money or they might end up crumbling with no money. He is not my boss, I am his boss now.” She added, this was a different Taylor. This is an enigma to me. This Taylor is different from the one I met.
