Liam’s POV
“Bro, don’t grab my clothes like that. If you treat me this way, I’ll tell Dad!” Maya exclaimed hysterically, her sharp voice nearly shattering my eardrums.
I reluctantly seized her hands and hoisted her onto my shoulder, ignoring her protests as I carried her back home.
“Liam, is this what you find amusing? You’re Kevin’s beta and my brother. If you won’t help me, are you going to help those bitches who are trying to seduce Kevin?!”
Faced with my silence, Maya grew frantic, shouting my name, furrowing my brow.
“Maya, precisely because you’re my sister, I have to stop you from doing anything embarrassing or offensive to the Alpha.”
“How am I embarrassing you? Liam, do you think being a Beta makes you so great? Stop telling me what to do!” She retaliated by kicking her legs forcefully, almost slipping off my back. I opened the car door and dumped her into the passenger seat.
“Maya, I’ve warned you before. Kevin doesn’t love you; he loves Ella. By persistently following him like this, you’ll only get hurt,” I said sternly.
She laughed dismissively, adjusting her posture nonchalantly as before, arrogantly crossing her legs. “Bro, that dumb mute Omega is already dead. She’s nothing but a pile of bones at the bottom of the lake now. Why should I fear her? Besides, in terms of family background, beauty, or strength, I am the cream of the crop among the Blood Moon pack’s she-wolves. Kevin’s Luna can only be me.”
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, remaining silent for a moment before deciding to reveal the truth. “Maya, I have to tell you something. Alpha has found Ella, and she’s alive.”
And she’s no longer just a mute, her appearance became very beautiful.
“What? Ella is alive?” Maya turned to me in shock, her eyes filled with envy and resentment. “Impossible. She should have died with her damn mother five years ago. This can’t be true.”
I looked at Maya with regret and sympathy. She had been obsessed for too long, and I couldn’t let her continue to lose herself.
“Maya, Ella is truly alive. Alpha and I saw her at the Blue River pack. Alpha loves her deeply; she means more to him than we could ever imagine. You know how stubborn he is. He’s been unwaveringly searching for Ella for the past five years, and now that he’s found her, he won’t easily give up. So, Maya, please stop fixating on him. It will only hurt you.”
I wanted to comfort my sister, but she pushed me away, her emotions running high.
“So you mean Kevin is so angry tonight because of that mute Omega?!”
I silently acquiesced.
“So what if she’s alive? Do you think I’ll lose to that worthless mute?!” She exclaimed. “It’s ridiculous. I am the strongest female warrior of the Blood Moon pack. All the wolves in the pack know I am the most suitable she-wolf for Kevin. For the past five years, I’ve been by Kevin’s side. I am the woman who understands him the most!”
I opened my mouth to speak, then closed it again, ultimately saying nothing. Maya had been spoiled by our parents since childhood, always proud and arrogant. She would do anything to get what she wanted. She had hated Ella for a long time; in her eyes, Ella was worthless and couldn’t compare to her. So, I didn’t want to crush her by telling her that Ella was not a wolf to be underestimated.
Like Maya, I had also underestimated Ella before our encounter with her and Alpha at the Blue River pack. In my memory, she was just an ordinary she-wolf, her face even blurry. But later, I realized I was wrong. Ella was a true warrior-smart and brave. Even though her wolf wasn’t strong and she was ranked lowest as an Omega, she didn’t pity herself. During the years when no one paid attention to her, she focused on studying medicine and became a top pharmacist.
She would exchange her blood for the son of a hunter who had nothing to do with her, face the terrifying Illusion Grass alone for a colleague she had only recently met. I believe she must have many virtues that I haven’t seen. She’s beautiful yet unaware, talented yet humble, courageous yet independent-she is the best she-wolf I have ever seen.
Now, I completely understand why Alpha Kevin is so infatuated with her. As Alpha’s Beta, I wholeheartedly believe Ella is fully deserving of becoming Luna of our Blood Moon pack. So, I am well aware that Maya will find it difficult to surpass Ella’s place in Alpha Kevin’s heart. Furthermore, compared to most wolves, the alpha’s heart is the most ruthless; he only cares about his needs. Even if Maya has been his longest bedmate, he would not hesitate to abandon her to achieve his goals. As her brother, I don’t want her to get hurt in this love triangle and become the subject of ridicule in the Pack.
“Maya, I’m serious. I know it’s hard, but I hope you keep your distance from Alpha. There will be other men in this world who are more worthy of your love,” I said with concern.
But Maya just stared out the window without responding to me. Her disordered breathing clearly showed that she cared that Ella was the she-wolf who influenced Alpha to drink and vent tonight.
On the way home, Maya remained silent, sulking, refusing to speak to me. I sighed helplessly.
Back at the mansion, Maya stormed out of the car, slamming the door with force, creating a loud noise. I shook my head in resignation.
“Oh, Liam, my son, you’re finally back. How have these two months been?” Mother came out happily to greet me, while Father sat in the living room reading and studying something.
I just nodded to politely decline Mother’s eager hug and then turned to go upstairs.
Honestly, such displays of affection were too cheesy for me. I’m a reserved wolf, not fond of social niceties. Since childhood, I’ve only been interested in battle and military matters. Rather than spending time with family, I prefer executing the mission orders issued by the Alpha, to the extent that the wolves say I’m a wolf without warmth, straightforward and unyielding. That’s also why I replaced Ariana Moore as the new Beta.
“Liam, I heard Alpha Kevin returned to the camp last week. Weren’t you on a mission with him? Why are you only coming back now?” Father stopped me, complaining.
“Yes, I came back with Alpha, but I had some business to attend to last week, so I stayed at Alpha’s camp,” I said emotionlessly.
“Nonsense, he just didn’t want to come home and be with us boring family members,” Maya mocked.
Mother gave her a stern look, and she stuck out her tongue, continuing to complain, “He only cares about loyalty now, he doesn’t care about the well-being of his sister.”
“Maya, don’t speak about your brother like that,” Mother said.
“Hmph, I’d rather not have a brother like this!” Maya pushed me aside and stomped up the stairs in her high heels.
