Jason.
Currently, I was on my way to the police station.
I’m guessing that saying – there’s a light at the end of a tunnel was true after all.
Detective Dave called me earlier to tell me the good news.
She said the forensics said that it would take a month or so to determine the state of the body found but I’m glad it didn’t take that long.
She called me earlier that they found something and that I should head to the station right now.
I’m very glad she’s involving me with the case.
Well, there’s no way she can’t involve me in it when the chief and I are acquaintances.
Since I didn’t take my car to Max’s place, I had to flag down a taxi to the station.
We soon arrived and I paid for the fare before coming out and dashing into the station.
“Good afternoon.” I said to the officer I saw standing by detective Dave’s desk, I’m guessing that’s her partner.
“Afternoon, and you are?” He said with raised brows and I chuckled before extending my arms for a handshake.
“I’m Jason Coleman.” I said cockily and his eyes widened.
“Pleasure to meet you.” He said changing his countenance.
“Yeah.” I mumbled quietly with a smirk on my face.
“Mr Coleman.” Detective Dave said drawing both our attention to her – her partner’s and mine.
“You said you had something to tell me?” I asked and she nodded.
Then she gestured to the seat in front of her desk asking me to sit down. I did as I was told while her partner still stood by my side.
“So Sophie confessed.” She began and my eyes widened.
“She did?” I asked a bit too excitedly.
“Yes, she did.”
“I told her that her brother had been found but not in the state that she expects.” She explained and I raised my brows.
“So you told her that her brother was murdered?” I asked and she nodded.
“You can watch this CCTV footage if you want more details.” She said turning her laptop to face me and pressing the play button so I could watch her conversation with Sophie.
“Why did you bring me back here?” Sophie whispered but I could hear it clearly.
I’m guessing this is an upgraded version or an expensive CCTV.
In the video, Sophie looked gaunt and her hair was dishevelled. She looked nothing like the cook I used to know.
“There’s something important you should know.” Detective Dave said to her.
“I already told you that Miss Alice didn’t ask me to do anything, I did it on my own. I was jealous that Eve had it better than me when we are both from poor roots.” Sophie said and I scoffed.
“This isn’t about Eve, it’s about your brother.” Detective Dave said and Sophie’s countenance changed.
“Is he alright?, I hope the job isn’t too stressful for him.” Sophie said quietly.
“Job?” Detective Dave asked but Sophie looked away.
“He looked like he was abused.” Detective Dave mumbled quietly and Sophie snapped.
“They said he wouldn’t do it!”
“They said he’ll just dance!” Sophie yelled.
“So you’re saying your brother is a dancer?” Detective Dave asked and Sophie looked away again.
“The audience must have wanted to talk to him in person…” Detective Dave’s voice trailed off and Sophie snapped once again.
She was too troubled to notice that she was being baited to tell the truth.
“I told him not to do it, talking to him in person must have meant that they wanted more from him.” Sophie said with a quiet voice and her eyes were already filled with tears.
And detective Dave had a confused expression on her face and then a minute later, she understood.
“Dwayne worked at a stripper’s club?” Detective Dave asked and Sophie sighed.
“Was he beaten up that bad?” Sophie asked.
“Detective, you see my brother’s gay but he’s scared to come out to my parents, he told only me about it and he’s a virgin too.” She chuckled.
“If someone told me that nineteen year olds at this time can be virgins, I would never believe it, especially since he’s a boy and all.” She said smiling and she looked a bit like the Sophie I used to know.
“I just hope he wasn’t beaten up that bad.” She said with a bitter laugh.
“Sophie, there’s something you must know.” Detective Dave said quietly and Sophie hummed in response.
“Dwayne’s… dead.” Detective Dave said, trying to sound as sympathetic as she could.
“What?” Sophie whispered.
“He died a few weeks ago.” Detective Dave said.
I was expecting Sophie to scream or throw a tantrum but she simply sighed heavily.
“She killed him, didn’t she?” Sophie mumbled.
“Alice.”
“She killed my brother, didn’t she?” She repeated a little louder than before.
“After I promised to keep my mouth shut on how she has tried to kill Eve countless times with her brother, she still killed my brother?” Sophie raised her voice and that’s when detective Dave pressed pause on the video and I looked up from the laptop to face her.
“The rest of the video is just her confession about how she was blackmailed to kill Eve, using her brother.”
“And the countless things she has been asked to do by them but have failed.” She explained.
“Okay.” I nodded in response.
“So what now?” I asked and she sighed.
“She confessed but there’s no evidence of all these things.”
“We can bring both of them in for questioning but if they don’t admit to their crimes, there’s nothing much that we can do.” She said quietly and I scoffed.
“Even with Sophie’s confession?” I asked with a slightly raised voice.
“Yeah.” She mumbled.
“Although, I already asked the forensic examiner to run a test on his fingernails and to trace the DNA other than his on his body.” She said,
“So what did they find?” I asked curiously.
“I checked the database and the DNA belonged to Mark, Alice’s older brother.” Detective Dave said with a smirk and I sighed in relief.
“You should have said this first.” I said laughing.
“So aren’t you going to arrest him?” I asked and she chuckled.
“He’s already been apprehended and is on his way to the station.”
“The only problem is that the cause of the death wasn’t the rape nor the assault, it was because of an injury to the head which means that he was either hit with something as strong as a bat or he fell down on a hard glass surface.” She explained and I hummed in response.
And as if on cue, the door opened revealing the one person that we were talking about – Mark.
