Chapter 94

Book:The Virgin Wife Published:2025-3-31

Jason..
“Sophie.” I said quietly that it almost came out as a whisper.
“Jason.” She said, still smirking.
“Now that I no longer work for you, I suppose I don’t have to keep using honorifics.” She said with a smug smile on her face and I scoffed.
“You’re right.” I nodded in response.
“I feel suffocated breathing the same air as you, so I’ll keep it simple.” I said quietly.
“Why did you do it?” I asked and she shrugged in response.
“Who put you up to it?” I asked and she still didn’t budge.
“Are you pleading the fifth?” I scoffed and she giggled.
“You do know that you were caught in the act so there’s no way, you’re getting out of this place, ever!” I said sternly so she would understand but she still didn’t budge.
“Did someone pay you to do it?” I asked but she still didn’t say anything.
I sighed heavily.
She’s not going to answer huh?
Okay, we’ll do this the hard way then.
“I looked into your family when you first came around.” I said quietly and she raised her brows in confusion.
“You used to work for Alice’s family right?” I dropped the bomb and she shuddered.
“N-no, I-i d-don’t.” She stuttered and I smirked.
“Did Alice…” I paused and looked at her waiting for her to react.
Silence was taking over the room and she fisted her palm.
“Alice didn’t ask me to do anything, I did it on my own Accord!” She yelled.
And I laughed.
“I didn’t say Alice put you up to anything.” I reminded her and her face fell.
“So did Alice ask you to do that?” I asked and she paused.
“No.” She mumbled.
“Did Alice ask you to murder Eve?” I chose my question carefully.
“Murder?” Her eyes widened in fear.
“Yeah, murder!” I said putting emphasis on the word.
“I-i wasn’t trying to kill her.” She mumbled and I scoffed.
“You overdosed her with insulin!” I yelled loudly.
“You tried to kill her!” I snapped and she screamed.
“No!!!” She screamed loudly as tears streamed down her face.
“I swear, I didn’t try to kill her, I just…” She wanted to say something but she paused as if she came to a realisation.
“Alice gave you the insulin to kill her but you had no idea that it would kill her right?, She must have said that it would only make her sleep right?” I asked, speculating everything.
“No!” She suddenly snapped.
“Alice isn’t involved in this!” She snapped and I frowned.
She just won’t give in, would she?
“I did it on my own.”
“I swear, I did it on my own!” She said crying.
“Why are you telling a lie?” I asked angrily.
“If you tell the truth now, you’ll get a lower sentence, don’t you know?” Jade added.
“If she put you up to this, she’ll be an instigator to the murder and you’ll get a lower sentence if you were blackmailed into doing so.” I explained but she just wasn’t ready to tell the truth.
“Tell the truth Sophie!” I snapped.
“There’s no truth to tell.” She yelled angrily.
I could see that this conversation was going nowhere and so I got up from where I sat down and left the room with Jade. I could still hear her screaming – there’s no truth to tell.
She must be really scared.
But what if it’s not Alice and I’m simply barking at the wrong tree.
What if Sophie really did it herself?
I wanted to think that way but I just couldn’t help it.
Sophie couldn’t have done it herself.
The girl has worked in my house so I would know that she’s a really clumsy person.
Where would she have gotten the idea to pretend to be a nurse and who could have given her an insulin shot?
That’s something that could only be done by a very cunning person.
A sly person like Alice.
The only other person I can suspect if not Alice would be Mark.
Why Mark?
If I’m right about my speculation, he seemed to harbour a lot of hatred towards me and that’s probably because he has feelings for Eve but would he go the extra mile to end Eve’s life just so she wouldn’t be with me?
And that brings me back to my first theory – Alice.
Alice is the best suspect.
Everything points towards her but they’re all speculations. There’s no direct evidence that can lead us to her and the only person who can bring her in is Sophie but Sophie is refusing to talk.
She’s insisting that she did it on her own which I still stand by is impossible.
“Mr Coleman, I’m sorry that you couldn’t get her to talk, we are going to go through a thorough questioning with her and make sure she confesses who the real culprit is.” Dave said once we were out of the room jolting me from my thoughts.
“Thanks, I really appreciate that.” I said quietly.
“But what makes you think that this Alice person is the one behind the failed attempt to kill your wife?” Dave asked and I shrugged.
“She’s someone who bears a lot of grudge against me.” I mumbled quietly and she nodded in understanding.
“We’ll get back to you sir.” Dave said, giving me a salute and disappearing into the questioning room.
“She’s pretty.” Jade said once we weren’t there anymore.
“You have a girlfriend.” I reminded him and he laughed.
“Who says I can’t call a girl pretty because I have a girlfriend?” Jade said and I scoffed.
“Besides, Patricia isn’t my girlfriend, she’s my fling.” Jade said and I nodded in response.
“So you’re a big flirt.” I teased and she smacked me playfully.
“I’m not a flirt, I just don’t want to take my chances.” He said, making me laugh.
“So you’ll do all what couples do but you don’t want to commit, you’re a real jerk, aren’t you?” I said laughing and he frowned.
As we walked back to the parking lot where the car was parked, I couldn’t help but feel like I was being watched but I shrugged the feeling away.
I’m just being overly sensitive.
“I’m not a flirt, seriously.” Jade said and I mimicked him mockingly.
