Chapter 85

Book:The Virgin Wife Published:2025-3-31

Max.
I couldn’t sleep a wink all night.
And so, Once it was seven in the morning, I got up, took my bath and got dressed before waking Ethan up.
He was really tired, especially since we stayed in the hospital until it was really late yesterday night.
“Baby..” I called quietly and he hummed in response.
“I’m going to the hospital.” I whispered quietly.
“This early?” He asked groggily.
“Yup, I’m worried about Eve.” I said and sighed heavily.
He opened his eyes and sat up on the bed.
“Should I drive you to the hospital?” He asked, rubbing his eyes.
“No, you don’t have to, you can’t just close your cafe.” I said quietly.
“I..” he tried to say but I shushed him.
“Baby, I love you and I want what’s best for you, I don’t want you to close down your cafe just because of me.” I said.
“I’m not doing it because of you, Eve is my friend too. We might have met because of you but she’s my friend and my employee.” Ethan said as a matter of fact.
“Okay fine but you have to go to the cafe and put up a sign or notice first.” I told him and he nodded in response.
“I’ll go now, see you at the hospital.” I said smiling and he nodded before giving me a peck on my cheeks. I blushed and got up from the bed.
I walked out of the house and took the elevator downstairs. Then I got out of the apartment complex and flagged down a taxi that would take me to the hospital.
When I got there, I quickly took the elevator to the second floor where Eve is staying.
I couldn’t find Jason’s mom when I opened the door to Eve’s ward. There was no one there.
I assumed she went downstairs, probably to the reception or cafeteria.
I walked towards the bed and sat down on the stool that’s close to the bed.
“Eve.” I said quietly as I looked at her sleeping figure.
“I’m here.”
“And I miss you, you need to wake up now.” I said in a broken voice.
“I can’t stand seeing you lying here like this, you’re my best friend and you mean a lot to me, it pains me to see you in this state.” I said and I felt a tear trickle down my face which I quickly wiped off.
“She’s in here.” I heard a voice say and I recognized it to be Jason’s mom but who is she talking to?
The door to the ward flew open revealing Jason’s mom and Eve’s family.
What are they doing here?
I frowned the moment I saw them but I got up nevertheless and moved away from the bed so they could see her properly.
“Oh! Eve.” Eve’s mom cried out and moved close to the bed making me roll my eyes at her drama.
“How did this happen?” Her father cried out, joining Eve’s mother in the charade.
Her brother Isaiah simply stood by the door with an unreadable expression. I bet he was probably sick of their pretence as well.
“It was an accident.” Jason’s mom said quietly.
“Please explain in detail.” Eve’s mom said still crying but I could barely see any tears on her face. It all seemed fake like it was all just noise.
“She slipped down the stairs and hurt her head.” Jason’s mom said quietly.
“T-The d-doctor.. said she might never wake up.” Jason’s mom said after a short sigh.
“What does that mean?” Isaiah was the one to speak up now.
“Is my sister going to die?” He asked, his voice filled with concern.
“No, w-we don’t know for sure.” Jason’s mom said in a broken voice and I felt a lump in my throat.
A moment of silence engulfed us and I could barely hold back my tears but the statement I heard a few minutes later made me angry rather than sad.
“What does this mean for us?” Eve’s father asked.
“What do you mean by that?” Jason’s mother questions in confusion.
“If Eve dies, are you going to take back all the things that you’ve given us?” He asked and my eyes saw red.
What’s that supposed to mean?
Is he supposed to be asking such a stupid question in this situation?
“Excuse me!” I said in a loud voice.
I looked at Jason’s mom who had a look of surprise on her face.
“It’s better to let someone think that you’re an idiot instead of opening your mouth to prove it.” I snapped and everyone looked at me like I dropped a bomb.
“Are you talking to me?, Are you insulting me?” He was surprised by my outburst.
“I’m not insulting you, I’m describing you.” I countered.
“Who the hell are you to talk to me that way?” He snapped back and I scoffed.
“Who am I? I’m Eve’s friend.” I yelled in response.
“And so?, You being Eve’s friend doesn’t give you the right to talk to me that way, I’m her father and I’m older than you.” He said, making me scoff even more.
Is this the time to be arguing about who is older?
“How old are you?, Oh wait, I take that back because you can’t count that high.” I said, frowning deeply.
“What an unusual person!” He mumbled and turned to face Jason’s mother.
“Please tell me, are you going to take back the things you gave us if Eve dies?” He asked again, making me even angrier than before.
“I don’t know what makes you stupid but it really works!” I gave him another comeback and he was speechless.
“You’re so rude and uncultured.” He yelled angrily and I rolled my eyes.
“Max, please..” Jason’s mom looked at me pleadingly but I was not ready to back down.
“You must be talking about yourself right?” I scoffed.
“I won’t talk to you because I can see that you don’t have the brain to think.” He said angrily and turned to his wife.
“Let’s go.” He said to her but she didn’t budge from where she stood.
“Let’s go!” He yelled angrily, making me laugh irritatingly.
“Brains aren’t everything but in your case, they’re nothing.” I said, frowning deeply.
“Why are you being so rude to me?”
“You have no right to say all this nonsense to me.” He yelled angrily.
“I have to talk like an idiot because that’s the only way you’ll understand me.” I said not backing down.
“We’re leaving, both of you, let’s go.” He said pointing at Isaiah and his wife. Eve’s mother left where she stood by Eve’s bed and walked up to me.
“My husband didn’t mean it that way.” She tried to explain but I looked away.
“He’s just worried about Eve.” She said, making me scoff in disbelief.
That’s how to worry for someone?
By asking what you’ll get when they die? If that’s what worrying looks like, then I must have gone to the wrong school.
“Don’t explain to that uncultured swine, he’s one of those weird kids that Eve made friends with.” He mumbled but I heard him clearly.
“Let’s go.” He said dragging her away with him and leaving the room. I followed behind them as they left the room and stood in the hallway.
“Stupidity is not a crime so you’re free to go.” I shouted loudly.
“Oh!, I’ve had it up to here with this gay boy!” He yelled angrily letting go of his wife to come and face me.
