Eve.
After Jason had left with the others, Max bombarded me with questions.
“Eve, what’s really going on?” He asked and I shrugged.
He got up from where he sat with Ethan and came to sit by my side. Ethan simply watched us in confusion.
“What’s going on?”
“Is someone after you?” He asked and I smiled.
“No, stop asking absurd questions.” I said quietly. I was no longer scared nor shivering. So it wasn’t hard for me to speak up.
“Then why were you so scared?” Max asked again and I sighed heavily.
“I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who has been scared out of their wits so why are you so bothered about it.” I said in a snappy voice hoping it would make him back down but he seemed unfazed.
“Yeah but I know you, you hardly get scared so what’s different now?” Max countered.
“I’m no longer like that, you know change is drastic.” I said tilting my head and smiling.
“I know what you’re hiding.” Max suddenly said and I laughed.
“Hiding?” I scoffed.
“What could I possibly be hiding?” I asked confidently.
“That envelope.” Max said and my countenance fell.
“W-what e-envelope?” I stuttered.
Why did I have to stutter? Ugh!
“That envelope you hid when you came over to Ethan’s place.” Max said and I shuddered.
“I didn’t bring any envelope over.” I tried to lie but my voice failed me.
” Can’t talk again?”
“Cat got your tongue?” Max scoffed.
“Max, there’s no envelope.” I said once I found my voice.
“Eve, are you really going to be like this?”
“I said I saw it.” Max insisted but I ignored him. Maybe if I’m quiet about it, he would drop the conversation and leave me alone.
Sadly, that didn’t go as I expected. Instead, he dropped the bomb.
“Who wants to cancel you?” He asked and my eyes widened like a deer caught in the headlights.
“C-cancel me?” I tried to laugh my way out but I stuttered.
“Are you really going to continue this?”
“Are you really going to keep denying it?”
“What if your life is in danger?” Max asked, his voice filled with concern.
“I’ll be fine, it was just a prank.” I said hastily.
“A prank that made you so scared like this?” Max hissed.
“Guys, what’s going on?” Ethan asked with confusion written on his face.
“I can explain.” I said and sighed heavily.
I think it’s best to tell someone than try to shoulder everything on my own.
Besides, it was only once. Maybe the person realised that it was a childish move to stalk someone and give them an envelope filled with their pictures with red X signs on them.
” It only happened once.” I said.
“It’s no big deal.” I tried smiling but it didn’t reach my eyes and Max seemed determined to hear the full story.
“What really happened?”
“How did you get the envelope?” Max asked sternly.
“What envelope?” Ethan asked, still confused.
“Ugh!” Max groaned in frustration.
“I found an envelope in her room that time when she was still over at our house, in the envelope, her pictures were there but they were either cancelled out with red marker or torn away as if to say I’ll kill you or I’ll end you.” Max explained quickly to Ethan who nodded in understanding.
“And you didn’t tell Jason?” Ethan asked me.
“No.” I shook my head.
“We weren’t close then.” I said truthfully.
“You weren’t close then but someone wanted to kill you regardless.” Max said loudly.
“Because of him.” He mumbled the last part.
“Not that I’m blaming him of course, I’m just saying.” He said immediately so we wouldn’t misunderstand.
“I know.” I said in understanding.
“So what happened?” Ethan asked, ignoring the whole thing Max just said.
“How did you get the envelope?” Ethan asked.
“And why have you not told Jason?” Max added but as I was about to reply, we heard another voice. The voice of the person we were just talking about.
Speak of the devil, and he will appear!
“Told me what?” Jason asked the moment he got here.
“Nothing, it’s silly.” I said immediately and Max frowned.
“It’s just Max being silly.” I lied and Max sighed heavily before getting up and walking away to sit by Ethan again.
“Why don’t we all sit down on the grass?” I suggested it before anybody could ask me anything.
We all sat down in a circle to eat our lunch.
Everybody was talking about one thing or the other but my mind was on what Max said earlier.
It would only be right if I tell him before it’s too late.
“Should we all head home after this?” Jason asked.
“Why?, What about fruit picking?” I asked frowning.
“I’ve already won, what’s the use of the last game anyways?” Jason laughed while Max huffed.
“You’re just trying to squirm your way out of this.” Max teased.
“Me?, That’s impossible. I’m a fast learner, there’s nothing I’m not excellent at.” Jason bragged.
“That’s true, Mr Coleman is ambitious and he always won every game we held once it was sports day at the company.” Patricia said and Jason nodded in delight.
“Whatever.” Max huffed.
“I’m lost, happy now?” Max pouted and I laughed.
“You’ll win next time.” Jason said laughing. We all bursted into laughter while Max hissed loudly.
“I’ll get you the tickets.” Jason said after we stopped laughing.
“I’ll get the tickets for everyone here.” He repeated.
“Tickets to where?” Jade asked since he and Patricia didn’t even know the rules of the game.
“Only the best concert in the world.” Jason smirked.
“BTS?” Patricia was the one to ask.
“I love the way you think.” Jason said proudly.
“You’re also a fan?” Max squealed in delight.
“Wait..”
“You’ll get us the tickets, what’s the use of the bet then?” Max asked.
“Just to show you how dashing I am.” Jason said and I cringed.
“Ewww…” Max said, scrunching up his nose.
“How will you get the tickets?” I asked.
“You’ll see.” Jason said with a smug smile on his face.
