Jason…
The moment I saw Eve letting go of my hands and falling to the floor, my heart sunk, and I felt my world crumble.
“Eve!!!” I screamed her name and the crowd kept talking and yelling.
Everybody was confused and everything was in shambles and chaos.
This was supposed to be a great moment. My moment.
I felt a tear slip down my face, but I knew this wasn’t the time to be crying. Especially not with Eve on the floor.
“Call an ambulance, Jade!” I yelled, even when I could see him fumbling with his phone.
I held Eve to myself as the confused crowd took pictures of us.
I’m betting the next thing that would be on the news is-Girl faints from grand proposal. Or something similar, perhaps.
It wasn’t until five minutes that the ambulance arrived.
They put Eve on the stretcher and asked me to follow them to the hospital.
On my way to the hospital, I kept praying to God to just let her survive whatever this is.
We just got to be together, I can’t lose her now.
When we got to the hospital, they took her to the ER for a checkup and asked me to wait.
Jade soon arrived and rushed into the hospital, only to find me pacing about waiting for the doctor to come.
After pacing around for about twenty minutes, we saw the doctor coming out of the room.
“You can go and see her now.” The doctor said with a smile.
“What’s wrong with her?” I asked, still confused as to why she fainted.
“She’s under a lot of stress, which is not good for, especially in her state.” The doctor explained.
“I don’t understand.” I said truthfully.
“Mister…” The doctor paused, unsure of what to call me.
“Coleman.” I said.
“Mr. Coleman, we’ll run a few tests on your wife and get back to you, for now, you can go and see her, although she’s still unconscious.” The doctor said to me and I nodded.
“She’s been transferred to another room, so she can be monitored carefully, the nurse will escort you there.” The doctor said leaving to go and do whatever he was supposed to be doing.
Especially in her state? What exactly is that supposed to mean?
“I heard there’s going to be a shooting star tonight.” The nurses who were to escort me to Eve’s room discussed among themselves.
I sighed heavily.
Today was the best day to propose to Eve properly because that way, we could go and see the shooting stars together, and it would be all lovey-dovey. I never expected this to be happening instead.
I opened the door to the regular room which Eve was in.
I entered the room and went to her bedside. I didn’t even notice how pale she was looking. This is all my fault.
If I didn’t fuck up in the first place, we wouldn’t been in this mess.
I drew the stool close to the bed and sat down.
I took her hands from under the duvet and held it in mine.
“Eve, I’m sorry.”
“This is all my fault.”
“If only I had been a better man to you, we wouldn’t be in this mess.” I said to her, feeling downcast like never before.
“Oh my, a shooting star!” I heard someone say from the hallway.
“Eve, did you know that the orbit of a meteor is, in fact, very short?” I asked, even though she couldn’t answer me.
I knew she was listening because they say even a comatose patient can hear what people are saying, how much more an unconscious person?
“During that period of time, it feels like it’s going to fly out of the sky.” I chuckled.
“However, the meteor is attracted by the gravity of the earth from the start to the end. So it eventually approaches the earth.” I said, squeezing her hands softly.
“It’s just like you and me.” I said softly.
“Since when I met you, you’ve always been the one who is harnessed by unknown potential, and I’m truly grateful to you for that.” I said quietly as I felt tears dripping from my eyes.
“I hope you will wake up, so I can do the same.” I said and moved closer, kissing her forehead.
“What’s going on?” I heard someone yelling in the hallway, and I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me who that was. I removed Eve’s hands from mine and left the room, only to meet Max and Ethan just right outside the door with a scared jade trying to explain the situation to them.
“You’ve finally done it, haven’t you?” Max said the moment he saw me.
“Done what?” I asked, unsure of what he was accusing me of.
“Tried to kill her!” He snapped as he charged towards me, only for Ethan to hold him back.
“That’s not what happened!” I said with a slightly raised voice.
“Oh, it’s not?, Then explain why she’s lying unconscious in a hospital bed!” Max yelled angrily.
“I… I-i don’t know.” I muttered quietly.
Max was able to push through Ethan’s hold and run towards me before giving me a punch angrily.
“You son of a bitch!” He yelled afterwards.
“Max, calm down, she fainted, she’s not dying.” Ethan said, dragging him away from me.
I felt blood in my mouth from the punch I just received. I didn’t punch him back because I knew I deserved it anyway.
“It’s all because of this idiot that Eve’s in that state, Ethan.” Max said in a broken voice, and I couldn’t help but understand him.
“It’s not his fault, I was there.” Jade stood up for me and I felt grateful.
“Jade’s right, I was there too, Eve simply fainted because she was overwhelmed.” Ethan tried to comfort Max, but he wasn’t having any of it. He was ready to charge at me once again until we heard the doctors’ voice.
“Gentlemen, calm down, this is a hospital!” He said sternly, making Max calm down and give me a death look.
“Doctor, have you found out what’s wrong with my wife?” I quickly asked, but I heard Max scoff.
“She’s no longer your wife.” Max scoffed.
“Max…” Ethan mumbled.
The doctor cleared his throat, grabbing our attention once more.
“The patient is fine, in fact, she’s very much alright.” The doctor said,
“She is?” We all chorused, slightly relieved.
“Then why did she faint?” Jade asked, bringing us all back to the issue at hand.
“That’s because she’s…” The doctor paused, making my mind go wild.
“She’s what?” I asked, desperate to know.
