Chapter 39

Book:The Virgin Wife Published:2025-3-31

Eve..
The breeze was blowing steadily making me feel cold under the duvet especially since I was still naked under it.
Still closing my eyes, I touched the other side of the bed and I couldn’t feel the warmth there anymore. I rolled to the other side of the bed and truly, he wasn’t there anymore.
I opened my eyes and sprang up from the bed.
I looked around and noticed the windows were open. I must have forgotten to close them again.
I sighed heavily as I tried to stand up from the bed but I fell back due to the pain in my v region.
How could he just leave like that?
No good morning?
No words exchanged?
How could he?
I felt tears pool to my eyes and I wiped down the one that threatened to roll down my face.
No! I won’t cry again.
I won’t just stay still.
I thought we both wanted this?
I need an explanation.
I forced myself out of bed and closed the window before removing the duvet, bed sheets and pillow cases and changing them to a new one – sky blue with a hint of baby pink. I took a warm bath in the tub so I could at least walk properly.
I took the dirty sheets to the washing machine and placed them inside to wash them.
The maids were the one who did the laundry but I didn’t want them to know about this especially since Jason ran away this morning.
I just can’t believe that he actually ran away from me this morning.
Am I that unlovable?
Eve!
Don’t over think, just talk to him first.
I climbed the stairs shakily and stood at the last step contemplating whether I should barge into his room and demand an apology.
I was just about to walk to his room when I saw his room open and him walking towards me.
I turned and wanted to run away when I stopped at the middle of the stairs.
Why should I run away?
What did I do wrong?
I took careful steps down until I got to the last step in the descending order.
He walked down the stairs and stood there facing me.
We continued looking at ourselves and I expected him to say something but he just kept looking at me.
Then he looked down and stared at the floor.
Was he embarrassed?
Did he not enjoy it?
Why won’t he just speak up?
Is it so hard to speak up?
I wanted to talk but I couldn’t.
No, I won’t.
I gave him my everything yesterday but if he won’t see that then I won’t say anything. I looked away from him, turned and walked away to wherever my feet were taking me.
He didn’t even run after me which meant that he had nothing to say to me.
Instead he left the house.
I walked until I realised I was in the garden again.
I looked around and I noticed that a few new flowers were added and I could recognize some.
“Are you here to paint again?” I heard grandma Nini say behind me and I turned to face her with tears in my eyes.
“Oh child..” she said as she pulled me into her embrace.
“There there now.” She comforted me.
I sobbed for a short in her embrace until the tears stopped coming and I only felt dejected.
“I don’t know what happened but it would be fine.”
“I don’t want to get used to seeing you cry in here every time.”
“Whatever you have going on with Jason will be fine, he’s just in a bad place for now.” She said explaining, making me confused.
“I’m sure you know that the company is in a tight spot for now.” She said and I nodded.
“Worse of all is that, an employee was the one who leaked all those to the media and tried to sabotage all that Jason had worked for to get there.” Grandma Nini said, making me frown.
“Is that what he meant yesterday night?” I thought but I nodded in understanding to Grandma Nini.
“He’s not avoiding you.” She whispered but I shook my head.
“You don’t know that.” I mumbled as I walked away from the garden.
“Young love.” I heard her say as I walked away from the garden.
I went back to my room and changed into more appropriate clothing.
And then I called a cab to pick me up. I told Grandma Nini where I was going and she allowed me since there was nothing I was doing at home anyways.
The cab took me to Max’s boutique and I came down as soon as I paid for the fare.
“Mrs Coleman, welcome.” The girl at the reception said and I raised my brows.
“Oh, Max said you were married and we should address you as Mrs Coleman from now on.” She explained noticing the look of confusion on my face.
“Nevermind, just call me Eve like you always have.” I said to her and she nodded.
I smiled and went straight to Max’s office knowing where it was.
He was sitting on his swivel chair with glasses on and looking intently at his iPad that he didn’t notice me walk in.
“Max.” I called his name and that seemed to make him look up.
“Girlfriend!!” He squealed as he got up and gave me a tight hug.
“Ouch!” I hissed as I was still feeling pain in my v region.
“Oh my goodness, sorry.” He said immediately disengaging from the hug.
“It’s fine.” I said sitting down on the couch but he kept looking at me.
“You look different.” He said, still staring intently at me.
“Girl, did you have sex with someone?” He squealed after a short while.
“Shutup!” I snapped and he hissed before sitting down.
“Am I wrong then?” He asked, crossing his legs.
“No, you’re not.” I said quietly.
“I’m not!” He said in another high pitched voice and I shot him a glare.
“Why do you look so dejected then?”
“Do you regret it?”
“Was it bad?” He asked.
“Or is it because it wasn’t with Mr loverboy.” He teased me.
“It was with Mr lover boy.” I mumbled and he squealed again and if not because he’s my best friend. I sweat I could have shut him up with a slap or something similar.
“So you had sex with your husband, finally!” He said giggling like a child.
“Why don’t you look happy about this?” He asked after noticing the dejected look on my face.
“He left.” I said quietly.
“What?, He left after sex with you, oh my, were you that bad?” He asked and I glared at him even more.
“No stupid, he left this morning, he didn’t wake up beside me.” I said with my voice shaking and tears pooling to my eyes again.
“It’s not a big deal.” Max said and I frowned.
“It’s not a big deal?” I mumbled with the tears threatening to spill.
“Okay, it’s a big deal, I would freak out if Ethan did that to me but fill me in on the details first.” He said and I told him everything.
“Okay so what you’re saying is that, he came to you for comfort and you ended up having sex?” He asked and I nodded.
“He was drunk.” I added Incase he missed that part.
“Okay, he got drunk and came to you for comfort and then you had sex and he even asked for your consent.” He said and I nodded since he got it right this time.
“Then it’s alright then.” He said after thinking for a short while.
“It’s alright?” I asked, wiping my tears.
“Yes, you know what they say- in wine, there’s truth.” Max said but I wasn’t understanding where this was going.
“He was drunk, if he was interested in his mistress, he would have gone to her but he came to you instead. ” Max explained but I still didn’t get it.
“What does that mean?” I was still confused.
“He didn’t go to his mistress because she’s for pleasure and she means nothing to him, it means that he considers you his wife.” Max said, clapping at his theory but I was still frowning.
“That didn’t explain why he left this morning.” I said quietly.
“You said he had to go somewhere and his secretary betrayed him so that explains it then.” Max said and I smiled a little.
“Doesn’t matter.” I said, still smiling.
“Let’s just give him the benefit of doubt, if he doesn’t give you an explanation then we’ll deal with him together.” Max said, making my smile wider.
“You’ll deal with him?” I teased.
“Ofcourse.” He laughed and I was feeling better already.
“Thankyou.” I said feeling as if a burden was lifted off my shoulders.
“So how was it?” He asked and I raised my brows.
“How was what?” I asked.
“The sex, silly.” He laughed and I blushed.
“It was good.” I mumbled.
“Good good or great good?” He asked and I laughed.
“Great good.” I mumbled, feeling embarrassed.
“That’s nice then.” He said getting up and doing the happy dance as he said in a singsong voice.
“My best friend is no longer a virgin!”
“La la la la la”
“La la la la la.”
“My best friend is no longer a virgin!”
He kept singing, making me laugh until my stomach hurt.
After dancing and singing for a while, he sat down and I smacked him playfully.
“That was hilarious.” I said in between laughs.
“That dance made me hungry, let’s go grab a bite.” He said walking out of his office while I trailed behind him.
We walked down the street to a restaurant that he claimed to have discovered a few days ago.
One thing that was fervent about Max was his constant discoveries of great restaurants and bars. He had a knack for those kinds of things.
We entered the fast food restaurant and sat down by the window.
“Can we get a menu here?” Max yelled and I had to tap him to shut up.
“We have to yell.” Max said and I frowned.
“It’s rude.” I whispered quietly.
“No, it’s not rude, the owner is partially deaf.” Max said and I nodded.
“Sorry.” I mumbled.
“No need, I understand, it’s rude in most places.” Max said quietly and yelled again and this time I laughed.
The owner who was also the waiter soon came with a menu.
She was a bit old and she apologised for the wait.
Max was the one who placed the order.
We talked about other things for a short while and our meal was served.
The sight was marvellous to see.
“What’s this?” I asked Max after the owner had gone back to where she was before.
“I think it’s braised chicken spaghetti with cheese.” Max explained excitedly and I couldn’t help but feel excited too.
“Is that a thing?” I asked.
“Why don’t we find out?” He said, taking his fork. He took a bite and hummed.
“Delicious.”
“The cheese is just soooo…. Cheesy.” He said, making me laugh hard.
I took a bite too and I could relate to what he was saying.
The meal was amazing but it was soon cut short when the news that has been on mentioned Jason’s name on TV.
“The person behind the fall of Jason tech.” That was what caught my attention.
I looked up to face the television properly.
“What do they mean by fall? The company is still standing strong!” I said angrily.
“Hey hey calm down okay.” Max said, noticing my anger.
“The person behind it?” Max read the headlines.
“Clinton McCarthy worked as a personal secretary and driver to Mr Coleman and yet he tried to bring his boss down, what could be the reason for this?” The anchor who seemed to be the one leading the show asked the other anchor but I wasn’t listening again.
“Clinton?” I thought as my mind stopped at the name I heard.
“Jason’s driver was the instigator?” I thought.
“Oh my goodness.” I thought as my heart sank.
“I have to go home.” I said standing up abruptly.
“Calm down Eve, Jason’s probably not home and from what happened between both of you, I don’t think he’ll come to you.” Max said, making me sit down back.
“You’re right.” I said dejectedly.
“It’s alright, I’m sure he’s fine.” Max tried to cheer me up.
“Eat up, you’ll need your strength.” Max urged me and I nodded as I continued to eat the delicious food.
