“I want some water.”
“Hold it!”
“If I die of thirst, I won’t be able to see your boss’s wedding.”
The bald man glared at her impatiently, then reluctantly picked up a bottle of mineral water from the ground and fed it to Callie bit by bit. “Didn’t you get enough rainwater last night?”
Callie felt a bit more comfortable after drinking. She looked at the bald man and suddenly laughed heartily.
The bald man was baffled by her laughter. “What are you laughing at?”
Callie couldn’t stop laughing. “You’re so young, why do you always pretend to be so fierce? You don’t even do a good job of it.”
It was clear that the bald man had been in the streets from a young age. His face showed signs of hardship, but it was evident he wasn’t very old.
Her words hit a nerve, and he kicked the chair violently. “Stop trying to get close to me! It’s none of your business!”
“You’re getting worked up,” Callie continued. “You haven’t done any real dirty work, have you? I can tell from your knife; it’s not even sharpened, just for show.”
The bald man was embarrassed again and his face turned grim. “If you want to die, I can sharpen it right now!”
“Are you Charlotte’s college classmate?” Callie analyzed, looking at him. “But it doesn’t seem like it. You don’t look like you’ve had a higher education.”
“You really dare to speak! Do you have a death wish?” The bald man was furious and grabbed her by the neck.
“You must have met outside of school. She must have done something significant for you, a huge favor, for you to be willing to risk your life for her, right?” Callie couldn’t stop herself; she already had a picture in her mind.
Whether she guessed right or not, the bald man’s expression became complicated, and his grip tightened. “What does it matter to you?”
“You hold my life in your hands, how is it not related?”
This reminded the bald man that Charlotte had instructed him not to let her die.
He suddenly let go. Callie coughed a few times and continued, “You never thought Charlotte would have the status she has today, did you? I bet she used to be quite timid and kind. Did you ever think she’d become like this, wanting to kill me?”
The bald man’s face turned fierce as he glared at her. “You took everything from her first; you deserve to die!”
Callie smiled.
“What are you smiling at?”
“Did she promise you that even if you killed me, she could find a way for you to get away unscathed? You believe her because you’re sure this place won’t be found.”
Callie understood. “I advise you to think carefully. This is murder. If you get involved, your life is over. Why go this far for a favor?”
“Shut up! Stop pretending you know me!” The bald man stuffed a cloth into Callie’s mouth to shut her up and said, “I’ve seen plenty of people like you, hypocrites.”
Quite loyal.
Callie appeared calm on the surface but was actually quite anxious.
She had no idea what was happening outside. The only thing she could be sure of was that this was the Ellison family.
As night fell, the cold returned. There was no light around, and Callie’s stomach growled as she overheard some lackeys whispering nearby. “Bro, we haven’t eaten yet; we’re starving.”
“Shut up! Food will be delivered.”
Just as he said, before long, Charlotte appeared with a flashlight in hand and a large bag of packed food. She handed it to the bald man. “Thanks for your hard work.”
“How is she?”
“The fever’s gone, but she talks too much. I made her shut up.”
Charlotte gave a playful smile and walked over to Callie, removing the cloth from her mouth. “It seems you’re quite defiant.”
