Callie was forced to tilt her head back, feeling the sharpness of the blade.
“We are not the same kind of people.”
“Aren’t we?” Charlotte’s usual obedient demeanor vanished, replaced by a harsh expression. “We both grew up in the lowest rungs of society. Why is your life so good? You met Nelson first, living a life of luxury, and now you lecture me as Mrs. Oconnor!”
Charlotte never forgot the things Callie said as Mrs. Oconnor. She was kind, always helping her out of trouble with Marilyn. But Charlotte saw it as nothing more than condescending charity.
If she were Mrs. Oconnor, she could say those things too.
Callie understood now; her previous advice had been taken as reprimands.
“In your eyes, is the identity of Mrs. Oconnor so important? Without Nelson’s protection, I still have my own independent personality. What does he have to do with it?”
“Now that you have everything, of course you say that. I hate your hypocritical face.” Charlotte gripped the knife handle tightly, wanting to slash down but refrained. “But unfortunately, you’re about to lose all of it.”
“What are you planning…”
“Nothing much. I just realized something.” Charlotte straightened her back. “As long as you’re alive, Nelson will never look at me. So you can’t live anymore.”
She spoke as if discussing the weather, hard to imagine such words coming from a seemingly innocent woman.
Callie’s spine chilled. “If I die, Nelson won’t let you go.”
“He won’t know. I’ll take your place forever. Everything of yours will become mine. One day, he will love me and grow old with me.” Charlotte’s face showed an almost fanatical anticipation. “Even if he finds out, so what? I am the eldest daughter of the Ellison family, his youthful salvation. Would he really retaliate against me?”
Crazy, absolutely crazy! Callie couldn’t believe how deeply she had immersed herself in this role.
“Why are you nervous? I won’t kill you now.” Charlotte looked down at her with disgust. “I’ll let you witness our grand wedding before killing you.”
Callie said nothing, clenching her fists.
The bald man couldn’t help but speak up. “Isn’t it risky to wait? If Nelson finds her, everything will be over.”
“This is an abandoned site within the Ellison family estate, remote and hidden. He won’t find it.” Charlotte explained, throwing the knife to the ground. “She’s feverish. Give her some medicine; don’t let her die.”
“… Alright.”
Before leaving, Charlotte glanced disdainfully at the disheveled Callie. “I need to rehearse tomorrow’s wedding process. You better hold on and watch me marry Nelson.”
It seemed to be her obsession.
After they left, the bald man fed Callie some fever medicine and applied a hot towel to her forehead, his movements clumsy.
Her voice was hoarse. “How much did she pay you to make you work so hard?”
“Do people like you only see money?” The bald man pinched her cheek. “I’m doing this for loyalty!”
Loyalty… It seemed Charlotte’s friends or former subordinates were helping her.
Her phone had been taken away, making it impossible to contact the outside world. She wondered how Joaquin was doing and why Jamir had failed…
Would Nelson find her?
