Chapter 171 – Shift

Book:The Rejected Ex-Wife Published:2025-3-13

Chaos erupted as rogues poured into the Nightshade pack. The men who were supposed to kill Zeus were caught off guard and as a result, placed their focus on killing the rogues.
“Stop this foolishness at once!” Georgina growled at Darren who was berserk with the loss of his mate.
“Get out of the way, mama.” He said from the other side of the battle, “Get out of the way before you get hurt. He must die at my hands.”
Zeus lay on the ground, weak and very much alive. While they argued, he tried to get off the ground but it proved to be difficult.
“You can’t kill him even if you try.” Georgina stood in front of Zeus. “He’s too strong for you. Get out of the way before you get yourself killed. I didn’t train you to be this careless.”
Darren could not be reasoned with. Earlier in the day, he watched his mate die from the fifth surgery conducted on her.
All because of his demon brother Zeus.
He must die at his hands. He was done waiting for the perfect timing. He would take his vengeance and rightful place as the Alpha king after his brother was disposed of.
He would kill him today. No matter the costs!
Darren advanced towards Georgina with bared fangs. “I already told you. He killed my mate. He must die at my hands.”
“You are making a mistake!” Georgina growled and bared her fangs. “Let me handle things!”
Darren shifted into a large brown wolf midair and landed on paws. His wolf took gallant strides and killed anyone who dared to oppose or stand in his way.
Georgina’s men fought off the rogues that seemed to multiply by the wind, while Zeus slowly tried to get up. The fight intensified as Darren killed more warriors until he got to his grandmother.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said via mind link. “We don’t have to fight.”
“You must be mistaken. Killing Zeus is not as easy as you think.” Georgina snarled. “He has a lot of power within him. I can’t let him die with it until it’s safely transferred.”
“T-transferred?”
Georgina shifted into a wolf and strode with caution. “You have always been silly. Shy of the wits that make a great leader or king.”
“Whereas you only want to kill him, I want to do something more. The werewolf race would never be free from the threats of hybrids like Zeus.”
“Someone needs to protect us. I have spent the last few decades hunting down different covens, extraditing their powers and killing them.” Georgina confessed.
“Zeus is the first and last of his kind. The fire elemental. As soon as I am done with the rites, he’ll be dead.”
Darren lost it. “You already killed them! They couldn’t harm a fly in their graves. It’s useless keeping those powers. Or keeping witches around.”
Georgina tutted. “Small, small mind. This is why you can never be king. Your tactlessness and lack of foresight will be your doom.”
Just then, Darren let out a wild growl and leapt at Georgina. An intense battle began as they fought for dominance. The old Alpha female was nothing short of impressive as she battled her brash grandson.
Meanwhile, June’s wolf approached the pack boundary with his fangs bared. A terrible odour welcomed them into the Nightshade pack as they watched rogues ravage the area.
“What the hell?!” June thought as she watched from her wolf’s eyes. As soon as the others sighted Augusta’s wolf, they recognised her scent.
June watched as her wolf fought gracefully, diving into the war as it tried to find Zeus. The moon goddess’s words never left her consciousness and when she met the chaos, she knew they had to find Zeus.
Meanwhile, Georgina beat Darren to a pulp and forced him to submission. Her minions cleared the rogues around them and returned to their job of taking Zeus powers which would eventually kill him.
Zeus lay on the ground with his eyes red. His anger and frustration were visible until he sensed her. She was somewhere around. Close. Alive.
June entered the pack and met them at the training grounds. Surrounded by a lot of dead bodies. Wolves and rogues alike.
“Augusta..?” She heard a voice call from the ground. It was Darren. June felt Augusta react to him so strongly. A large amount of pain and agony flooded her body.
“Not now,” June said to her wolf who was slowly approaching Darren. “We need to get to Rafael. To Zeus!”
“We can always deal with him later.” She added, “We don’t have much time! Please!”
That seemed to do the job as the large wolf continued on its track to the others. Zeus laid helplessly on the ground as they once again tried to kill him.
Georgina watched gleefully. If things went well, Zeus would be dead and all the powers would be locked up in an orb which would be hers to keep.
She would become the Luna Queen and rule over the werewolf community. It was as simple as that. Darren was no fit for the position of Alpha.
Not anymore.
Georgina felt her presence first. She turned around and came face to face with a large white wolf that had the presence of an alpha.
Who was it? She thought as she bared her fangs, ready for a fight. “Let him go!” The unmistakable voice of June made its way to her mind.
Georgina stepped back in shock. Refusing to believe it. “Reveal yourself!” She roared. “Shift!”
June’s wolf was not in the mood. Her white fur was stained with the blood of anything that stood between her and Zeus.
June felt her heart fall into the pits of her stomach when she saw Zeus on the floor, staring at her with shock and very much in pain.
Georgina anticipated her first move. June moved to kill the men who thought it wise to hurt her mate but Georgina stepped in the way with her fangs bared.
In one second, she shifted into her proud wolf who was ready to kill. “Do not test me,” June heard in her mind, “Shift.”
Her warnings went unheard when June leapt towards Georgina’s wolf with an unexpected strike that sent her to the ground.
When Georgina’s wolf hit the ground, the others turned around, noticing the ruckus. “Focus!” Georgina said through the mindlink and got up to attack June but was a bit too slow.
June’s wolf tore right into her guts, tearing her stomach open with one bite. Georgina shifted immediately, badly hurt.
June headed for the others who stood with their backs faced to Zeus who couldn’t speak. The men focused on the white wolf, muttering chants that did nothing to June.
Within the twinkle of an eye, June’s wolf killed two of the men and was ready to finish the third when a silver knife pierced through the neck of Augusta’s wolf.
Zeus felt a sharp pain, worse than any he’d ever felt. He looked to the side and there he was. Darren stood with a crooked smile.
“We are finally even.” Zeus heard the words flicker into his mind and that was it. Augusta lay on the ground. Lifeless.
A loud earth-shattering growl which shook the ends of the earth erupted as everything went black as Zeus’ wolf took over.
