Callie’s phone, which was in her bag, began to vibrate violently. She picked it up and saw that it was a call from Jaquan.
She wanted to ignore it immediately, but Nelson’s deep and commanding voice said, “Answer it.”
She gripped the phone tightly and hesitated for a moment before answering.
On the other end, she could hear Jaquan’s heavy breathing, barely holding back his anger.
No one spoke for a moment. After a while, Jaquan’s hoarse voice came through, “Did you and Nelson set me up?”
Callie frowned and looked at the man beside her. He remained expressionless.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Callie!” Jaquan’s voice rose, and there was a hint of tears in it.
She was startled and looked at Nelson again. He showed a restrained expression.
“Tell Nelson that I will settle this score. He should be careful.”
With that, he abruptly hung up. Callie threw the phone aside. “What did you do?”
Nelson looked at the sky ahead. “It’s almost dawn. Go back and rest.”
“Nelson!” Callie hated it when he acted like this. “You use me as a tool; you should at least tell me what you’ve done!”
The man finally turned his gaze to her, looking at her with pity. “I told you not to get close to these people, but you didn’t listen. Since you got involved, you should be useful, right?”
Callie almost dug her nails into her palms, trying to guess. “The only person who could make Jaquan lose control is Cyrus. Something happened to him, and you did it.”
Nelson neither confirmed nor denied it, continuing to fiddle with his prayer beads. “Grandfather’s death cannot be used in vain.”
Callie understood then. She leaned weakly against the seat. “Marilyn will be here today. It was your plan to let Sienna find out and deliberately attract Jaquan’s attention.”
Nelson smiled playfully. “Compared to her, you are more crucial.”
Callie was an unexpected part of the plan, but her presence was evidently more useful than Marilyn’s. She had distracted Jaquan and delayed him significantly.
Callie hadn’t expected her actions to become Nelson’s pawn. “What did you do? Did something happen to Cyrus…”
“Finding someone similar to replace him was complicated and took a lot of effort.” Nelson frowned at the thought. He looked at Callie. “He was too much trouble. I wanted him in prison, but he kept trying to escape. So now he’ll stay with me forever.”
As he said this, Callie felt a chill. She had thought Nelson didn’t retaliate because he was mourning his grandfather and had reservations, but she didn’t realize he had been hiding his malice until now.
He was still the vengeful demon.
Her fearful expression displeased Nelson. He reached out, grabbed her neck, and pulled her closer. “Scared? One day, you’ll thank me for my scheming today.”
His words were strange, and Callie narrowed her eyes.
The sky outside gradually brightened, and the streetlights went out. Callie felt exhausted and sat there.
“How did you know I would go to Jaquan?”
Nelson lit a cigarette and took a few puffs. “Reuben’s clues are with him. It was only a matter of time before you went to him.”
He really knew.
“How much do you know about Reuben’s whereabouts?” She asked cautiously, almost pleadingly. “Can you tell me?”
Nelson flicked the ash off his cigarette. “Not more than you.”
Callie’s heart sank heavily. He said, “So we need something to hold over Jaquan, don’t we?”
It was daylight when Nelson got out of the car and instructed Kieran to take Callie back. She had learned too much and was not in a good mental state.
