“Mummy, I remember everything.”
Edith saw the woman smiling warmly as she looked at her. Edith felt the gentle touch of the woman’s hand. Edith did not smile back but shed tears as she looked at her.
“Oh, my little girl. I’m sorry, dear.”
Jovanka took Edith into her arms. She had wanted to meet her little daughter for so long, and only now was her wish realised. Edith was unconscious and almost lost her life.
“I’m sorry that I had to leave you when you were so little. But you don’t have to worry anymore, dear; you can always bring me a visit,” she added.
“Why does my life have to be like this, mummy? Why do they all want me? What did we do to them?” asked Edith as she sobbed with tears already running down her cheeks.
“Hush, don’t say it like that. Edith, every creature that lives in this world must have its own destiny and purpose in life. Destiny is never wrong, and neither is the person who determines that destiny. Maybe you’ve met your grandmother. Your presence in this world has a purpose, and it has to do with werewolves. The Moon Goddess and your grandmother wanted to protect us, Veela, by bringing us together with werewolves.”
Jovanka rubbed Edith’s head. She sensed that Edith was much more settled now. Edith tightened her hug on her mother. She was so happy to see her mum again, even if it wasn’t in real life.
At first, Edith thought she was dreaming, but her mother’s presence was so real. It was just that they were in the borderless place where Edith had met her grandmother. She was sure that it was the pendant that had brought her here again to meet her mother.
For a moment, Edith didn’t want to go back. She wanted to be with her mum without having to go through the things her destiny had in store for her. When her mother convinced her to stay with her family now, it made Edith think twice.
She always thought her mother was the toughest woman who could always get through every problem in her life. Although her childhood memories are too hazy, Edith believes that her mother has a big role in every journey of her life according to her destiny. She concluded that she had to be tough like her mother, fighting to defend her family until her death.
“You should know, we Veela do become strong and weak because of the feeling. You can become very strong because you love your immortal mate, and you can become very weak if your immortal mate dies. That’s what happened to me; I couldn’t live without your father.”
“I understand, mum,” Edith said as she lowered her face.
“There is one thing I want to tell you. That hybrid named Kai-you can trust him. He likes you, but his imprint on destiny is not you. The Moon Goddess has another imprint on his destiny. Can you keep this a secret, dear? I eavesdropped on your grandmother and Selena’s conversation.”
Jovanka covered her mouth to stifle the amusement of her own words. The next second, she was back to her normal mother mode after a brief moment of being a seductive veela. Edith realised that part of her did have a seductive nature. Edith took her mother’s hand one last time before she woke up. She hugged her mother tightly to feel her gentle touch, like when she was little.
“I’ll go first, mum. I’ll visit you once in a while. Thank you for being the best mother to me.”
Jovanka smiled at Edith and nodded in understanding of Edith’s decision to regain consciousness.
“Hurry up; Seth is waiting for you to wake up. He’s like a lunatic.” Jovanka said as she blinked one eye.
Edith opened her eyes. The first figure she saw was Seth, who was already shedding tears beside her. Just as her mum had said, Seth looked a mess, even with tears welling up in his eyes. Edith touched Seth’s face to show that she was fine.
“Thank to Moon Goddess, I thought I’d lost you,” Seth said as he loosened his hand from Edith.
“You’re not dead, so I can’t die. Did you forget that, dear?”
“What a stupid wolf!” said a voice Edith recognised.
“Shut up, you bastard! I didn’t allow you to be here to mock me,” cut Seth.
Edith straightened her seat as she saw Kai across the gurney, leaning against the wall of the room.
“Kai… you guys…” Edith looked at Seth and Kai in turn.
“Edith is awake; you better leave before I break your jaw!” Seth said this without looking at him.
“I helped his Luna, but what do I get? He’s still arrogant!” said Kai in a dismissive tone.
“On behalf of Seth, Alpha Red Crescent Moon Pack, and myself, I would like to thank you very much, Kai Gregory.” interrupted Edith to reduce the tension between the both of them.
“His name is Malachai Henderson, just so you know, and he’s a big liar,” Seth said in a provoking tone.
“He does owe me an explanation; tell me who you are, Kai.”
“You can strangle him if you’re upset with him, baby.”
Seth felt he had the upper hand, and without needing to be provoked by him, Edith had already started staring at Kai. So Seth just had to watch what interesting scenes would happen after this.
Edith was already starting to get annoyed when she saw Kai’s misbehaviour when Edith looked at him. Edith thought of following Seth’s suggestion to strangle Kai. She stretched her hand forward and a second later Kai was already lifted into the air and hovered a few inches off the floor. Edith stepped forward and locked Kai hanging in the air with a movement of her hand.
“I’m sorry, Edith.” Kai said hoarsely.
“Tell me everything!”
“I love you.”
Edith tightened her fingers so that Kai began to cough in the air. Kai raised his hands up, signalling that he was giving up. His throat hurt because Edith was choking him. Behind Edith, Seth just laughed at the interaction between them.
“My name is Malachai Henderson, Emma is my mother. I used to be a warrior in this pack, but I was cursed to be a vampire by a witch as a punishment I had to receive from Alpha Kellan, Seth’s grandfather. I’m a hybrid and I once wanted your blood to turn me back into a werewolf. But that’s not going to happen because only the last descendant of a veela can reverse the curse, whereas you already have Seth’s child and I’ll never be a full werewolf again.”
Edith still did not let go of Kai, she felt that there was still something that Kai had not said.
“I’ve said everything, Edith. Please, I can’t breathe.”
“Vampires don’t breathe, you arsehole!” Seth added in a loud voice.
“I breathe, my heart beats, and I bleed. I am a hybrid. You’re either deaf or stupid, Seth.”
“Who are they?” Edith asked Kai in an empathic tone.
