Rex’s POV.
“Are you out of your mind, Rex?” Alice snarled angrily over the phone.
Clark sat down next to me as he remained quiet. He kept looking at me at intervals.
“You still have a whole month to convince Elena to return home. Can you stop being a dickhead?” She cursed angrily.
“Stop being a dick? If she wanted to return home, she would have done that long enough. Why stay back and fight for something that has no possibility of even working out? Huh, tell me, mother!!” I said in defense.
“You know, have you seen her lately? Dressing all sexy, taking so much time applying make-up and all that and worst of it all, who is she settling for? My own beach supervisor?” I muttered angrily as I got up from the chair I was seated on.
“And what about that?” She slammed. “Dressing sexy and trying to live her life shouldn’t be something you ought to take seriously. And I know Elena, she would never settle for just anyone.” Alice mumbled in a gentle tone.
I exhaled sharply as I raised my eyebrows. “Can we at least not talk about her for now, mother?” I gasped.
“Is that jealousy I hear in your voice?” She scorned as she chuckled softly.
“What do you mean by jealousy?” I questioned immediately. “And why should I be jealous about how she wants to live her life? I was just concerned about my two little adorable angels. You don’t expect me to sit back comfortably and watch another man raise my kids. Hell no, mother!” I rolled my eyes as I turned to Clark.
I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked at him. “What the actual fuck is funny here?” I said to myself as I looked away.
He chuckled softly. “It’s obvious you still love her, Rex. Why don’t you just go for it and stop acting tough?” He said in a whisper.
“I heard that, Clark.” Alice said cheerfully as she laughed.
“And he got an invitation from the Bohen’s family since he is now a major business man here in New Kingston.” Clark muttered as he looked at me.
“Are you being serious right now, Clark?” I slammed as I looked at him.
“An invitation from the Bohen’s?” She gasped out. “Rex, how come you never mentioned it to me?” She queried.
“Why should I go, mother? The Bohen’s family can’t be trusted and worst of all, they think I am Liam’s killer. What if this is just another of their plots to ambush me?” I said as I rolled my eyes.
“I know you can be stubborn and there is no way I can be able to convince you. The founder’s banquet!! That’s one beautiful party you won’t ever want to miss. A touchdown of the history of New Kingston and you get to meet different Alphas and business men as well that has influence. If not for anything, at least, do it for yourself.” She muttered calmly.
“You already know mother that I won’t go.” I exhaled sharply as I rolled my eyes.
“You could even go with Elena Toussaint, your beautiful and sexy, personal secretary.” Clark chuckled as he looked at me.
“Seriously?” I scowled. “You know, I sometimes wonder how you even became my beta.” I sneered.
He held his chest firmly like he was experiencing a heart attack. “Damn! That was hurtful. You just broke my heart!!” He said playfully which did nothing rather than to piss me off.
“I don’t have your time now. And mother, how do you expect me to convince Elena when the one person I came down with happens to be in love with Elena’s best friend?” I scoffed.
“What!?” She gasped and I could feel the excitement in her voice. “Did I just hear you say that Clark is finally ready to love someone?” She questioned excitedly.
“Seriously?” I rubbed my forehead, feeling frustrated now as I still couldn’t understand why they were fond of each other like he was her child.
“Not really, Alice. It’s just a platonic love.” He shrugged as he looked at me, then he frowned.
“You know you have to look out for yourself too, Clark? You are not getting any younger, Clark. You need to search for your mate now. At least, I can’t wait to carry your children.” She said calmly over the phone.
Clark smiled as he assured her that he was working towards finding his mate. They exchanged a few words before we called it a day and before we could even utter a word, a private number called my personal line.
I quickly answered the phone as I remained silent.
“Hello, Rex… King.”
The masculine voice seemed to reverberate in the room. It was husky and hoarse as well.
“I trust you are having a beautiful day?” He rhetorically asked as he continued. “I was hoping we could both sit down and have a drink and then, do a little catch up.” He muttered calmly.
I turned to Clark who had this surprised look on his face too.
“…But then, that should be at the banquet.” He shrugged. “I have some exciting information for you and maybe we could become allies too.” He muttered.
“Allies?” I sneered. “Who are you?” I questioned.
“The only friend you would ever need when your sworn enemy, Kingsley, comes at you.”
I couldn’t help but turn to Clark again. I signaled Clark to track down who the caller is.
“You don’t have to track me down.” The husky voice left a reverberating sound again as I felt my heart skip. “See you tonight, Rex!” He said briefly before ending the call.
“He has ended the call.” I slammed as I raised my eyebrows. “Whoever was on the phone must be from Cleveland, but… why the banquet?” I asked as I furrowed my eyebrows.
I couldn’t help my curiosity now as to who the caller was. I got up from where I was seated as I looked at Clark. “Get my car ready!!”
