Elena’s POV
Marie’s phone buzzed repeatedly.
“Marie?” I called out in a loud voice as I looked at the kitchen. “Someone is calling your line, you better hurry and answer it.” I responded as I looked away.
“Was picking her even necessary?” I cursed as I forced the bread inside my mouth before sipping my tea.
“Are you being serious right now, Elena?” She scowled as she got back to the mini dining room, then she looked at my plate to see that I still had a handful of scrambled eggs plastered on my plate.
She picked up her phone as she looked at the caller ID. She raised her eyes as she stared at me for a while, with a smile that seemed to be gradually escaping from her mouth.
I rolled my eyes as I knew what she was about to say next.
“Come on, Elena!” She snapped as she finally had those broad smiles on. “This is him just being a gentleman and nothing more than that. Can you stop making it look like a big thing?” She queried as she looked at me.
Her phone rang again and this time, she immediately answered the call as she still had her eyes on me, and her smile seemed not to waver in any way too, which only did nothing rather than to piss me off.
“I got here a few minutes ago. Though this was you still trying to shy away.” He mumbled.
I could hear the excitement in his voice. I rolled my eyes, causing Marie to chuckle softly in a mocking manner.
“No, not at all.” She responded as she bit her right index finger. “I went in to get my handbag and umm, umbrella.” She said with a broad smile on her face. “Seems like it is going to rain today.” She said as she turned to look at me, winking her right eye as she smiled.
“Oh, yeah. But you won’t be needing that because I will be your personal chauffeur today.” He said in a husky tone and I found his excitement on the high side.
“Okay?” She chuckled. “Actually you don’t have to be.” She mumbled and I nodded my head in approval, because the last thing I ever wanted was anything that would bring me close to Rex and I still couldn’t get the one answer I have been searching for and that was, ‘which game are they playing here?’
“Actually, you know you might end up working late today and I can’t let you go home alone.” He scowled as he chuckled softly.
“Are you two serious now?” I snapped as I looked at her. “He is literally outside and you? You are inside and you two still intend to spend so much time talking over the phone? Huh?” I sighed as I got up from the chair I was seated on.
“I will be down in a jiffy.” She cut him halfway this time around as she looked at me before rolling her eyes.
“Come on, Elena. Why are you always dramatic when it comes to Rex and Clark? Trust me, Clark is definitely a good man.” She said in defense as she looked at me.
“I never said he was bad. I just don’t want Rex coming back into my life. He has already caused more damage already and I can’t let that happen again.” I groaned as I looked at her.
She remained quiet for a while as she looked at me. “Come off it already, Marie.” I chuckled softly as I looked at her as I poked her right arm. “I am fine. I’m sorry for always acting up, okay?” I said in an apologetic tone as I smiled at her broadly.
“I totally understand you, Elena. You don’t have to always try to act tough either.” She rolled her eyes, as she picked up her handbag and the umbrella that I hung close to the door.
She took the lead and I walked gently behind her as I kept looking at Clark who relapsed on the driver’s seat as he kept his entire focus on Marie.
As we got closer to where he had parked his car, he stepped out as he sat down on the bonnet, then he folded his hand as he wore a broad smile as his eyes were fixed on Marie.
“Why is he staring at me that way?” She said in a whisper as she tried maintaining her smile too. “I am definitely going to have my heart on the ground soon.” She chuckled lightheartedly, as she looked at me for a while before looking away.
“He is usually like that, I presume.”
I turned to look at her, confused by her last words. “Presume?” I asked as I rolled my eyes.
“I meant ‘he always looks seductive.’ Ahem!” She said, clearing her throat this time around as we finally got to his car.
“Good morning, beautiful ladies.” He greeted me as he stood upright now, as he now had his eyes on me.
Looking at him, I knew he had a lot to say to me but then, I wasn’t ready to let anyone reopen wounds that ought to remain dead forever. Rex was now in my past and there was no way I was ever going to let him in again.
“Good morning.” We greeted back in unison and Marie? She had this huge smile on her face.
We hopped in as he drove us down to work and the moment I stepped down, I didn’t even spare him a single second, as I found myself walking hastily inside the tall building.
I heard approaching footsteps too and finally, my name followed.
It was Marie. And still trying to leave and also give her a listening ear, I had bumped into a stranger, as I tripped off then one of my heels broke off
“F*ck!!” I whimpered as I shut my eyes and the last thing that remained with me as I fell to the ground was the passersby. “Why now of all time?” I cursed.
