OLIVIA
My alarm clock beeped, jolting me awake. In a fit of rage, I slammed it off and buried myself back under the covers.
It was the weekend, and I had no intention of stepping out or engaging in anything remotely strenuous. My goal for the day was simple-stay in bed, switch off my phone, and avoid any calls that might ruin my peace.
It was also the first morning I would wake without Cyril next to me on the bed ever since he left the house and decided to move in with Rene.
Hypothetically, last night should have been awful. But to my surprise, it was the best sleep I’d had in a long time. I slept like a baby, uninterrupted, knowing there would be no pointless midnight fights. No one to jolt me awake over baseless accusations.
It was one of those nights where I would pay to witness for the rest of my life. As I slept, the thought of Cyril didn’t cross my mind.
That goes to show how much I’ve moved on from him. I can’t wait for the divorce procedures to be finally over to ensure my total freedom. That way, I get to spend more time with Adrian without being labeled as an adulteress.
Just when I thought my day was going to be perfect, I heard someone banging at my door. At first, I ignored the loud knock because I didn’t want anyone to ruin my day.
However, the knock kept coming regardless of how I tried to ignore it. This time, it became louder every second that went by.
I said to myself, I need to find out who wants to pull down the roof of my house.
I wore a more decent outfit that covered my cleavages before stepping into the living room to feed my eyes.
Even without asking, I knew it had to be Cyril. He’s the only one capable of displaying such a nuisance.
As I opened the door to welcome Cyril, I met a familiar foe instead. It was messier than I thought.
She forced a smile just to get my attention. I didn’t reciprocate her kind gesture because I knew she wasn’t to be trusted. I also figured out that her reason for showing up might not be genuine.
Why could she possibly show up when she knew so well that Cyril wasn’t home? It was a mystery I was desperate to figure out.
“Hi, Olivia,” Rene waved at me. I could only imagine myself twisting and breaking those hands of hers.
“Cyril isn’t here,” I rudely answered. I wanted to shut the door in anger, but she appeared to be faster than me and was able to force her way inside.
“I told you already. Cyril isn’t here. Have you come to finish up the dirty job your assassins started?” I yelled at Rene.
“What assassins? I honestly don’t know what you are talking about. Is there something I should know?” Rene denied it as she pretended to be in shock. I could see deceit and guilt written all over her face.
“Oh, I see,” I forced a wicked laugh and rushed to shut the door. I also hid the keys in my pocket should she attempt to snatch them away from me.
“Why are you shutting the door against me? What have I done wrong?” Rene freaked out. She feigned to be scared. Her antics did not move me. I was damn certain it was faked…
“I ask you again, Olivia. What’s going on? First, you mentioned some bloody assassins who wanted to hurt someone. Now you shut the door against me. Are you trying to abduct me or what? Please do make me understand,” Rene yelled back at me. She was slowly returning to her old self after seeing that her trick wasn’t effective on me the first time.
“Are you going to stand in front of me and pretend that you didn’t send those assassins to have me murdered yesterday? Look into my eyes and tell me that you’re innocent of all allegations, Rene,” I unleashed the bombshell.
“Excuse me? What sort of allegations is this? Are you aware that you could be prosecuted for that? How dare you accuse me of such? Do you have proof of that?” Rene denied it with all alacrity. She didn’t even wait for me to finish up with my question before attacking me.
What else was I expecting? That she would confess to her crimes? Hell no! Even at gunpoint, she would choose to get shot in the head rather than admit her atrocities.
I didn’t plan to confront Rene about the situation in such a manner. It was quite unfortunate that she had to walk into the lion’s den with her two eyes open.
As the heated argument ensued between me and Rene, another knock came in again. This time, it was none other than Kate, my assistant.
I wasn’t pleased that she showed up because I asked her to take the day off.
That was the least I could do to reward Kate for those times she came through for me. Not even a trip to the Bahamas would repay her benevolence towards me during my trying times.
However, her presence at this crucial time of my life changed everything. And she managed to show up at the time when I needed her the most.
“My assistant is at the door,” I said, turning back to Rene. “Now, I want you to repeat every damn thing you just said-to her face.”
Rene’s smug expression wavered.
“Who knows?” I continued, my tone laced with dark amusement. “The next knock might be the police, coming to drag you away. And trust me, not even Cyril will be able to save you.”
The color drained from her face.
This was it.
The moment I had been waiting for.
And the best part?
I wasn’t going to handle her alone.
Kate was about to walk in, armed with her fire, ready to burn Rene to the ground.
She was about to learn the hard way why it was a mistake to go after another woman’s husband.
And I was going to enjoy every second of it.
