RENE
I watched Cyril sleep like a baby after he had devoured the food I made for him. The only thought that came across my mind was to stab him and take pleasure while he bled to death slowly.
However, the plan might seem stupid eventually because I wasn’t legally married to Cyril yet, nor had I gained access to some of his assets.
I glanced at the wall clock and realized it was 9:30 PM. Sleep has suddenly become my foe. How can I retire to my bed with my two eyes closed, knowing that my mission was yet to be accomplished?
I thought Cyril was gonna leave immediately after he shared the devastating news with me. But no, the son of a bitch decides to find solace in me. His presence made it difficult for me to go visit my mother. I wouldn’t want him suspecting that I was up to mischief.
As I thought of an escape route, I heard a buzzing sound on my phone. I hurriedly turned down the volume of my phone to avoid waking Cyril up.
I realized that it was a text from my mother. She hasn’t been able to reach out to me all day. And at the same time, I haven’t called her all day either.
“Why didn’t I notice that? I must have been engrossed with what has been happening lately,” I mumbled.
I was inclined to speak to my mother over the phone but not in the presence of Cyril.
As much as I tried to convince myself that he was fast asleep, he might wake up immediately and catch me red-handed. And when that happened, my mother and I would be spending the rest of our lives in jail.
To confirm that Cyril was truly asleep and not just pretending, I waved my hand across his face. I did it countless times just to be certain he wasn’t faking it.
Luckily for me, Cyril didn’t even blink a bit. That was the first time I’d seen him sleep like that. Although, it didn’t come as a shock to me. For someone who has a rough day, I expected him to sleep for 24 hrs.
I couldn’t bring myself to answer the phone due to the immense pressure on me.
I exhaled and said to myself, “Rene, you can do this. Just stay confident. You got this under control. Your mom might be mad at you but don’t let that weigh you down.”
By uttering those words, I became fortified and clothed in the garment of self-confidence.
I called my mother again and dashed to the balcony to answer the phone. It was only a matter of time before Cyril sneaked out from nowhere and caught me in the act. No amount of explanation would make him believe that I was telling the truth.
I shut the door from outside, too, just to be on the safer side before calling my mom over the phone again.
I wouldn’t want Cyril to be in this suspicious situation. Let alone see me calling my mom at such an odd hour. To worsen it, I had to sneak out to make the call. It’s going to be the worst day of my life. He would have every reason to believe that my mom and I were plotting evil against him.
“Hello, Rene,” my Mom answered the phone and held her breath. It’s as though she was programmed to say those few lines.
I didn’t pick any offense, and neither was I mad at her because I thoroughly understood the situation on the ground. I would certainly act like my mom if I was in her shoes.
I did her dirty.
Something I can’t tolerate being thrown at me. I was pretty lucky that she agreed to speak with me over the phone. Others won’t have bothered.
“Are we going to stay like this for eternity, Mom? Is this a breathing competition now? For you to have called earlier, you should have said something rather than keeping quiet,” I snapped, outrageously frustrated that she refused to speak. I thought she was going to get straight to the point.
“If you don’t speak up now, I will be forced to end the call. Have you called me all day? Have you forgotten what’s at stake? Do I have to remind you? Or is it because I didn’t yell at you?” My mom threatened me with a thick voice.
For the very first time in my life, I got to see Mom yell at me. She always treats me like a queen.
“Please, don’t hang up on me. Please stay put. I still want to speak to you. I promise to speak this time.” I hurriedly spoke. The only thought that came to my mind was pleading immediately just to calm my mom’s nerves.
I wasn’t with her, but I could sense the anger burning inside of her. If given the chance, she was going to devour me and get away with it.
“I’m here now. Spill it already. I have other important business to tend to, and you’re wasting my time.” my Mom sighed. I could hear her heart beating faster from where I was.
I also glanced around just to be certain that Cyril wasn’t coming from anywhere. That would ruin my plans. Imagine being the villain of Cyril and Olivia. The consequence would be worse than a death sentence.
“We’ve got a problem, Mom. Cyril fell out with his lawyer,” I hurriedly spoke. I was losing it already and needed to do something to save myself.
“I don’t understand what you are saying. Does it mean that he won’t be getting a divorce from Olivia anymore?” My mom asked for clarification. Coincidentally, that was the exact question I asked Cyril when he initially told me about his fallout with his lawyer.
“Yes, Mom.
He feels bad about it too.
I’ve been trying to console him all day,” I reported.
“Babe, where are you?” I heard a voice that sounded like Cyril calling me from a distance. Some footsteps could be heard too.
Initially, I tried to ignore the voice. But when I heard him call my name a second time, I realized I needed to act fast.
“Mom, I need to go. He’s here already,” I quickly ended the call and rushed to the kitchen, pretending I had gone to get water.
I was this close to being caught.
I would have doubted it if anyone had told me Cyril would be up. The fact that he called my name saved me.
What if he had walked in without calling out?
What a night it has been!
