Time – 6:40 am
“We should have just taken up our mist forms instead of entering those junky cabs. They were so slow, and we know we would have gotten here faster than being constrained in that crappy machine.” Kane grumbled, walking beside his brother, Dobah, and Blenda.
“Quit grumbling Kane. We are here after all, aren’t we? Dobah queried. “Besides, don’t you think it will attract a great deal of attention if we should just appear in front of the hotel?”
“We don’t have to be in front of the hotel, Dobah. We can go behind and reemerge. No one would have known.” Kane pointed out, akin to aghast when Dobah shook his head.
“You don’t know that. This age is different from the centuries we have spent in different countries. I keep telling you this but you seem too reluctant to accept the harsh reality. For all we know, one of these teenagers might be with a phone doing some video or trying to sneak up on hoteliers. Someone could be making out or smoking at the back. Anything could happen. You should know and always remember that. This machine called the phone is more powerful that you give it credit for. You know, thinking of it now, I shouldn’t have let you sleep that long in the ground. It’s good that your lifemate is nearby, who knows what you would have done?” Dobah said, unmoved by Kane’s glares.
Although Kane thought his brother was right, after all his carelessness had scared his lifemate from him when she had seen him feeding off the man last night, he would be caught dead admitting that to his brother.. “We could compel them to forget…if someone had seen us.”
Dobah sighed. It was almost futile arguing with his brother. His brother never accepted defeat. Like his lifemate, he couldn’t wait to see the tamed version of his brother. Even though the male of his kind usually fought about it, at the end, they still released part of control to their lifemates. They just couldn’t help it, not when their light and happiness lies in them.
“You would not be able to compel someone you didn’t even see to capture you with a phone. And stop talking, the receptionist is looking at us weirdly. She must think that we are talking too much for a male folk. We should have just communicated through the mind path.” he said, looking away from the receptionist that was looking at them strangely.
Did the witch warn her about their coming?
Kane looked at the receptionist after his brother’s statement. Gauging her gaze, he was doubting that the lady who was probably in her early twenties was thinking about their loquaciousness. It was probably about the drama that he had caused last night. He sighed at the thought. Now, they would have something to tease him about.
The others were behind them, deeply quiet, especially Freya who had stopped teasing Yodah after they had stepped off the car. It was as if the realization of what was about to happen, what might be the case was about to happen.
If the woman was her mother, then that changes everything she had ever known. Perhaps she could ask about the identity of her father then. According to Aiden, their kind never mated with werewolves or witches, but only that could explain her identity. She was part their kind and part witch; and Kane had mentioned that the woman had used magic to protect them from him.
Even though she was nervous about the meetup, she hoped the woman was her mother. It would bring her search to a halt, and she would be able to convince Emma to come back.
“Hello, Mr… welcome back. I don’t think your wife will be forgiving you soon. You must have upsetted her a lot.” the receptionist said, causing the others, apart from Kane, to have quizzical looks. They didn’t know what she was talking about.
What is she talking about? Dobah asked Kane through their mind path.
But Kane kept silent. He inhaled deeply, and softened the contours of his face, recreating the sober face in turmoil which he had employed last night.
“But I still love her…what do you suggest I do? I have brought my family to help me plead with her.” he said, aware but not minding the stares from his brother and the others. They must be thinking he was crazy. He thought, pulling his lips in.
“Well, that would not be necessary.” the receptionist said, clicking a tab on her computer.
Kane furrowed his eyebrows, feeling afraid for the first time in many years.
“What do you mean?” he asked, almost stuttering at the end.
“Well, she checked out early this morning, around …well…let’s see…” the woman said, peering into her laptop. “She checked out around 5:45 am. Quite early if you ask me. And she was really in a hurry with her sister. I think they are twins if you ask me…” the woman said, muttering the last part to herself, but of course they all heard it.
Kane let out a deep sigh, staggering back a little.
“Did she leave anything at all, perhaps an address or a clue to where she might be heading? Did you perhaps overhear anything?” Blenda asked, stepping closer to the counter. “Please, this is very important. She means a lot to us.” she added, knowing that they had to get to Lucille or else her brother in law will lose it.
“Well, whilst she conversed with her sister, she mentioned something about a mooneway street…that they would find a friend there, a certain melvina…” the receptionist whispered, bringing her head closer to Blenda’s.
“Wow, thank you so so much. Accept this tip from us.’ Blenda said, smiling as she dropped a wad of cash on the counter which the receptionist immediately took and hid in her bag, her eyes going through and fro the lobby to see if she had been seen. She still loved her job.
