CHAPTER 456: SUSPICIONS

Curtis let out a deep breath as he climbed down from the high window which he had climbed earlier in order to see his mate, Claire, or rather instinctively watch her invisibility form move into her house.
When he thought that he had seen enough bizarre things relating to Derek’s mate, his own turned out to have magic.
Oh wow, what a twist. He thought, sliding down to the floor, the sleep totally gone from his eyes.
He had been dozing off, when the scent had first wheeled past his nose. He had tried to ignore it thinking that perhaps his mind was playing tricks on him in his subconscious state, but the scent had stayed, and he had no choice but to get up and know what was really happening.
When he opened his eyes and sat up on his bed, he had counted from one to twenty, and had counted his fingers, to be sure that he wasn’t still dreaming. The scent had stayed, and the time was just two a. m.
What could she be doing outside at this moment. He had thought, getting out of the bed. He had first peeped through his window, his mouth falling agape when he saw his mate, Claire, stroll into the garden with a luminous blue and yellow flame on the tip of her fingers.
He had shook his head first, and cleaned his eye twice, even went as far as pinching himself, but the result had remained the same. He wasn’t dreaming and he had just seen his mate handle flame like it was nothing.
Without wasting any more time, he had hurried out of his room quickly, his fast steps slowing down when he had gotten out of the house, making sure to rub the ointment which he discovered he still had; for he didn’t want to startle her or make her aware of his presence. He had been very curious about what she had been doing in the garden. Since she had rejected him, he had found her suspicious. And even though he had been unable to stop himself from helping her when Emma had blasted her across the wall, he had decided to be on the lookout for her, for he didn’t trust her or her intentions.
She was after Derek and the throne after all, and would do anything to have them. He had seen or rather heard the strong conviction in her voice when she had told him away.
Still, he wouldn’t let that happen, not if it jeopardizes the peace of the pack. He was already sure that his cousin would have nothing to do with her. And that’s why even though her scent was alluring and the memory of the kiss they had earlier had been playing out in his mind, he had steeled his emotions and the yearning of his wolf and had gone ahead into the garden after her, choosing and climbing up a tree which he had known would b a good spot to see all that he wanted to see.
He had stayed, watching her think, drinking in her scent and her beauty until she had jerked her head up and was beginning to look around.
That had been when he had connected the dots together that she had perceived his scent just then. Quickly, he had stepped down from the tree, but before he did so, he had seen her become invisible, that had been the worst shock of his life; the image remaining with him as he almost ran back into his room, knowing that she would follow the trace of his scent for the effect of the ointment had already worn out.
He had seen when she had turned back and left after almost catching up with him in the hallway, or rather had felt or sensed where she was since she was automatically invisible.
But courtesy to his swolf, he seemed to know where she always was.
Noiw sitting there, Curtis wondered what he should do. Should he tell his aunt and cousin that Claire was part witch.
Would they believe him? He had no proof, and he didn’t think there was any test that could be conducted to prove that.
Finally, he decided to tell his sister, Maya. She would know what to do about the matter. He thought, standing up from the floor. She could decide to tell Derek or whomever. That was up to her. These past few days had taught him that family was everything and people that you should trust – not the scum ones like his father though.
No, not at all. As a matter of fact, His father was another mystery he was trying to solve, and so no, he couldn’t trust him either. He would prefer to trust Derek’s friends, although he was beginning to have a feeling that something might be wrong.
When he had been back from the forest that night, having gone to think on his next step and moves, concerning his father, his pack and his mate, he had noticed some deadly silence among Derek and his friends, Melvina included. He had asked his sister, but Maya had said that she was in the dark just as he was.
She had just returned from Ava’s place where she and Eva had gone to stay for awhile, probably planning on how to bring Emma back. But Shane had promised to let them know the next day, piquing their curiosity the more since Derek and his mother hadn’t been in the position to talk, Anthony included.
For a moment, he had thought his uncle , Alpha Peter, had died, but then he had his voice call out to his aunt, and had exhaled in relief then. Now, he couldn’t wait for the morning to reach, couldn’t wait for the heavy information to drop.
Although, he hoped that it wouldn’t be as devastating as the fact that his mate had rejected him, not caring to know at first who he was or what he looked like. Her curiosity just now to know him was null and void. He had already decided to forget her, and hope for a second mate, a second chance from the goddess.
