Callie was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, isn’t he the heir of the Quinn family, a well-known figure? Your tone doesn’t seem very appropriate.”
“What’s inappropriate about it?” Callie understood. “When I first met him, he was just a pampered rich boy who was capable of nothing and needed people to coax him. He didn’t even want to be the heir.”
She spoke as if she knew him very well, with a tone that revealed a mix of helplessness and some weariness.
Regan fell into brief contemplation. It was only today, from their conversation, that she realized how familiar they were with each other. Very few people in this world dared to speak to Jamir like that, and Callie was one of them.
“What are you thinking about?” Callie called her back to reality. “Your phone is ringing.”
Regan belatedly took her phone out of her bag and answered it. “What’s wrong?”
Whatever was said on the other end made Regan’s face turn pale, and she stood up abruptly. “I’ll be right back!”
Callie also stood up. “What’s wrong?”
“Marilyn slit her wrists.” Regan’s lips were pale. “I need to go back immediately.”
Callie frowned in surprise and grabbed Regan’s arm. “I’ll go with you. The Ellison family needs someone to stabilize the situation right now. You have to step up, and I can help with whatever needs to be done.”
Regan hesitated for only a few seconds before nodding.
Marilyn had slit her wrists in the ancestral hall. When she was found, there was blood everywhere, and she was barely alive.
Ahmad almost fainted upon hearing the news.
Everyone was rushing back.
Callie arrived at the Ellison family home with Regan. Several cars were parked at the entrance, including one that belonged to Nelson.
The most renowned doctors in Ylosea were gathered there. In the spacious room, doctors were checking various data. Sienna sat beside the still-unconscious Marilyn, while Nelson stood on the other side, gently comforting Charlotte.
Isaac leaned against the doorframe. When he saw Regan arrive, his gaze fell on Callie behind her, and his expression turned hostile.
“Why did you bring her here?”
This voice caught Nelson’s attention. He turned his head, his gaze landing precisely on Callie.
Regan showed no fear. “Callie gave me a ride.” She stepped forward and asked, “How is she?”
The doctor glanced at the data and sighed. “From what we can see, Miss Ellison had suicidal thoughts due to emotional instability. Her family needs to prepare for emotional counseling.”
For half a minute, no one in the room spoke.
Regan felt somewhat awkward. “We will take note of that.”
“Yes, Miss Ellison seems to have claustrophobia. She should never be placed in a small, confined space again.”
Sienna finally spoke up. “Marilyn never had this problem before. How could this happen?”
“We can ask Miss Ellison about it when she wakes up.”
The doctor left, reducing the number of people in the room. Nelson patted Charlotte’s shoulder. “She’s been saved, so there shouldn’t be any more danger. The main thing now is to talk to Mr. Ellison about canceling Marilyn’s punishment.”
As he finished speaking, his gaze briefly landed on Callie before quickly moving away.
Sienna took it in and clearly felt heavy-hearted. “I’ll go talk to him. You all stay here.”
In a room full of people, Callie was the only outsider. She leaned against the door, observing Marilyn’s complexion closely. It didn’t look like she was faking it; the scars on her wrists were deep.
But for someone as opportunistic as her, how could she willingly give up her life? It didn’t make sense.
