Kamara’s POV
“And he asked me to grab something to eat out with him after Nana leaves the hospital. Can you imagine?” I scoffed, placing everything we’ve brought down on the counter. Chantelle and I came to the convenience store across from the hospital to get a few things and treats.
“Well, why not just grab something to eat with him?” Chantelle asked me, handing over her card to the cashier and it was accompanied by beeping sounds which I focused on instead of answering her questions. “Come on. Why don’t you want to have dinner with him? Because he’s mafia and you’d get your arm blown off again?”
I paused, turning to her with a scoff. “Come on, Chantelle. This is Diego we’re talking about. It’s only a matter of time before he gets mad again and starts snubbing me around the house. Our relationship is strictly as it is and I want nothing more.” I reminded her, grabbing our bags off the cashier’s counter as we headed out of the convenience store.
The question I had directed at Diego didn’t seem to bother him as he had walked away after making his point clear that he wanted to eat out with me. He practically left me with no choice even after I blatantly refused to go anywhere with him. Such a cocky bastard. Never hesitates to throw his weight around at every given chance.
“Ask him when you’ll be having that dinner. You don’t know, maybe this is where even a bit of change will be made. You know I do not like him. But if It means the rest of your pregnancy will be smooth sailing and you don’t need to bother about anything, then I am cool with it.” Chantelle said to me as we stepped back into the hospital.
“Are you trying to imply I start planning on becoming close to him? Attachment is never a good thing Chantelle. The only reason I’m here is because of my family. Even the family I’m doing this for, all think I’m in some New York fashion school chasing my dreams. What would they say if they knew I’m growing a literal baby in my body?” I asked her hissing as we stepped into the elevator.
I paused as I saw Fernando in the elevator. I hadn’t seen him in a while and whenever he came, I just heard Diego saying he just come. “It’s great to see you’re well, Kamara.” He said with a small smile before turning to glance at Chantelle.
“Did something happen between you two?” I asked her as we headed up towards the VIP floor where Nana was.
“Nothing much.” She replied, going through her phone. “So if we’ll be shopping for your date with Diego, I have a few places to go to. But I really doubt he would let you out alone after what happened recently with those rivals or were they enemies of his.”
“Why would he restrict my movements just because he can’t deal with his own issues?” I rolled my eyes before stepping into Nana’s ward. She was seated in bed, reading a newspaper while nodding gently. Nana might be modern at times, but there were still days when she decided to read the papers.
“Nana, we’re back,” Chantelle announced, rushing over to her bedside, and handing her some jellies. “I found these jellies in the convenience store. It tastes just like those ones we ate the other day.”
“You really should cut down on your sugar intake, Chantelle,” I mumbled but she heard me loud and clear, earning me an angry bark from her.
“What do you know? It’s not like you don’t eat any less than me. It’s just because of my godson you reduced your sugar.” She hissed, rolling her eyes as she tore the jelly open for Nana who just chuckled at our bickering.
“Alright, alright.” I nodded, turning on the TV just to keep myself busy. Everything had been boring since we were moved up to the VIP ward. It was just like any other day but with the fanciness of being in a hospital with rooms made of luxurious materials.
“Diego said he was going on a date with you tomorrow night, Kamara,” Nana called, making me turn toward her with widened eyes.
“Tomorrow?!”
“I thought he told you about it. He said he’ll be having dinner with you so I shouldn’t bother waiting for you two when I’m served dinner. Isn’t that really sweet of you two? You deserve a time together after what just happened.” Nana nodded with a proud smile and Chantelle agreed with her without any hesitation.
“Yeah, yes we were going on a date.” I nodded, turning towards my phone to see Diego’s message come in. It was the very first time he had ever texted me and not asked Fernando to do it instead. What he was up to, I didn’t know and I knew I couldn’t get used to it because he could easily snap back after the dinner.
Maybe he was just the type of person who repays favors even to those who owe him debts.
Dinner tomorrow night.
7 pm.
Fernando will pick you up with a dress.
Like I said, he was just trying to repay the favor of me staying with Nana and doesn’t have anything else tied to it. From what I’ve seen, he seems to love Nana a lot and it was the least he could do even if she was shit instead of me.
If I had been shot, I would probably have lost the baby too, and who knows what kind of complications would happen after that? I might end up unable to have another child again! All just because I want to pay the family’s debts.
A sigh escaped my lips as I rose from my seat, heading towards the restroom. I suddenly felt dizzy and a nauseating sensation as I thought of this. Am I really cut out for this kind of dangerous life? If Diego does anything wrong, I could easily be dead if his enemies did find a way in like those ones did.
Was this all really worth it? I should just go work hard and repay all the debts instead of agreeing to this.
It isn’t too late, is it? But would Diego even agree if I decide to pull out now? It’d probably be death in both ways.
