Kamara’s POV
I was seated next to Nana’s bed when I slept off. I didn’t know how I did, but by the time I woke up, I saw Nana staring at me with a smile on her face. “Nana,” I mumbled with a slight smile. I hadn’t registered what was going on around, and then it finally dawned upon me.
“Nana!” I screamed, throwing myself into her embrace. She laughed gently with a slight wince, making me draw back quickly. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’ll get the doctor,” I said hurriedly, dashing out of the room and returning with the doctor and nurses.
“Madam Sanchez, do you feel any pain aside from where you’ve been shot?” The doctor said to her as she was helped up to take her seat. She shook her head negatively. “What about dizziness? Do you feel dizzy or lightheaded?”
“No, I don’t at all,” Nana replied, her voice breaking a bit, but despite just waking up, I could tell she was the Nana I recognized.
“That’s great. You should take some rest, and the nurses will watch over you for a few more hours before we decide if you’ll be okay.” The doctor nodded before bowing. He headed out of the room, and I hurriedly followed after him.
“Are you sure she’s okay? You said the chances of her waking up this soon were low due to the shock.” I said to him, and he nodded gently.
“We’ll run some tests, and we’ll get back to you on that, Ma’am. But as long as she doesn’t get out of bed and gets enough rest, she should be fine in no time.” He assured me, and I nodded with a smile before heading back to Nana, who was still looking around. And when she saw me, a bright smile appeared on her face.
“How long have I been out, sweetheart? How have you been? And how is the baby? Did Diego bully you while I was asleep?” She bombarded me with questions like she always did every morning once she saw me.
“You’ve been out for almost two weeks, Nana. And I’m good, aside from the shot I took, and it’s been healing. And no, Diego didn’t bully me, I assure you.” I assured her, and a bright smile appeared on her lips as she took my hands with a smile.
“I’m glad. And hope you don’t blame yourself for what happened. It’s not your fault, and it’s not Diego’s either, we just happened to have an unfortunate day, okay darling?” She patted my hands gently as I nodded.
“I understand you, Nana,” I said with a bright smile, hugging her hands gently as I couldn’t hug her to avoid hurting her.
We got into a little catching-up mode, and the doors to her room soon swung open, Diego barging into the room at full speed. As soon as he set his eyes on Nana, I could see the relief in his eyes. “Damn it.” He gritted his teeth, turning his back towards us.
“You can cry all you want, love.” Nana laughed, and just as she said, I could see Diego’s eyes damp.
“Don’t ever scare me like that, Nana. What would I do if you also leave me.” He said, kneeling next to her bed while she took his hands with a small smile. “You were going to leave before seeing my child that you badly wanted to meet? Won’t that be unfair?”
“I’m sorry for worrying you, Diego.” She laughed gently. “Come on, you’re crying in front of Kamara. I thought you wanted to be the strong man.”
He ignored her comment and just took her hand with a satisfied look in his eyes. That was the most relaxed he had looked since Nana had been admitted, and it really confirmed he loved Nana more than anything. I haven’t really asked anything about his past because I didn’t need it, but bits of it were already obvious through his relationship with Nana.
The rest of the day went by, and soon, tests came out that Nana was fine now, except she had to stay a few more days to be monitored. As Diego sat next to her, talking to her and feeding her during meal times, he felt like a completely different person than he always was with others.
I’ve only seen it in movies where the oh-so-mighty Mafia boss is weak before one he deeply cares about. It wasn’t totally surprising, but still surprising in Diego’s case. He seemed like he finally climbed down his high horses to reach our level, and he didn’t seem like one who would at all.
“I see you staring at your man, Kamara. Don’t worry, love, I won’t be taking him away from you.” Nana laughed, and I wanted to gag, but I just pushed out a fake smile.
“Oh, Nana, before that, he’s your grandson, so he has to take care of you,” I said to her before standing up. “I’ll be back,” I said, heading out of the room.
I headed towards the bathroom, but I heard Diego call out to me, grabbing my arm as he drew closer. “Ouch.” I winced, glaring at him, and he quickly withdrew his hand with an apologetic look. I wanted to snap at him, but I just kept it to myself as I raised my brow questioningly.
“I’m sorry.” He said, and I felt like I was hit by a huge bell when those words escaped his lips. If I wasn’t frozen on the spot, I would fall to my knees instantly. The oh-so-mighty Mafia boss once again came off his high horse.
“I don’t know what you’re up to by trying to play nice, but let me make this very clear. I don’t want to be involved in this ever again.” I said, pointing towards my arm. “And if you’re feeling guilty, drop it already. It makes me want to gag.”
“Right. But thank you. Thank you for staying by Nana’s side all this time.” he said, his tone soft, I didn’t know how to react. “When Nana is out, let’s go out. My treat.”
“Hold on, are you crazy?” I blurted.
