Grace murmured softly, “I know, but it’s hard for me to accept. I can’t stop thinking about it. Even now, I still can’t completely let go. I dare not recall the past, It was like my proud parents had been a deception all along!”
Camille sighed silently, her voice hoarse as she said, “Maybe I feel indifferent towards them, so I don’t have much emotion. I’m sorry, but I might not be able to sympathize with you on this.”
Grace turned to face Camille, her voice gentle. “Camille, honestly, do you hate Dad and Mom? Do you hate me too?”
Camille paused for a moment and then asked lightly, “Why do you ask?”
“Because our relationship has always felt distant as if we’re not very familiar with each other. So, do you dislike us deep down?”
Camille pursed her lips slightly and spoke, “I don’t hate you. It’s just that Dad and Mom have always been cold towards me, so I’ve always chosen to be a quiet and low-profile daughter.”
Knowing that her parents didn’t like her, she also adopted a cold attitude. At first, it was indeed a bit heartbreaking. Not being liked by her own parents was a sad thing.
Grace sighed after hearing Camille’s words and whispered, “I’m sorry. I apologize on their behalf.”
“It’s not your fault. Why should you apologize?”
Camille replied calmly.
Grace pressed her lips together and said, “Because they might not have the chance to apologize to you anymore, so I want to do it on their behalf. They do owe you an apology.”
“I’ve already let go long ago, and I don’t hold any grudges against them.”
Indifference led to such calmness.
The two of them continued this topic for quite a while. After chatting about various things, Grace seemed truly tired and turned over to bid goodnight before falling asleep.
Camille lay in bed, maintaining a quiet silence. Her expression was particularly cold, and her heart felt heavy.
Tomorrow would be another day that could upset her.
In her heart, she had already come up with some answers. Upon careful reflection, it didn’t seem surprising at all because everything was destined. Camille couldn’t help but sneer inwardly, feeling helpless.
Camille sighed inwardly, her expression even more somber. The suffocating feeling in her heart was like a thorn in the flesh.
There were some things she wanted to ask before the results came out.
Early the next morning.
After waking up, Camille had breakfast with Grace before Grace left for work.
Camille had an appointment at the hospital in the afternoon but didn’t tell anyone about it.
Before that appointment, she had to go somewhere.
She quickly tidied up and then set off in her car.
It would take about an hour.
Upon arriving smoothly at her destination, Camille sat in the car without rushing out. She looked at the place in front of her and felt an indescribable emotion inside.
She pursed her lips slightly and took a deep breath before finally pushing open the car door and getting out.
She walked straight in and stated her purpose before waiting for instructions.
This process took about half an hour because she didn’t make an appointment beforehand. It would normally be impossible to see anyone without an appointment.
But Camille wanted to give it a try anyway.
She waited quietly. She didn’t have much hope actually. If she couldn’t go in there today, she planned to make an appointment and come again next time.
Just as this thought occurred to her, she received a result.
“Ms. Armstrong, he is willing to see you.”
Camille nodded in thanks and followed them into a small room.
She sat inside and waited. After a few minutes, the person she wanted to see arrived.
Camille remained seated without standing up. She simply looked at the person who entered. His face was cold and somewhat displeased as he said, “Where are your manners?”
Camille spoke in a cold tone, “Haven’t I always been like this? Besides, if we were really so polite with each other, wouldn’t you feel unfamiliar with me?”
After Camille finished speaking in a tone that was devoid of warmth, her face also showed an extra touch of coldness. She looked at the other person with apathy in her eyes.
The man asked indifferently, “What do you want from me?”
Camille snorted lightly and smiled faintly, “Dad, after all these years-do you have anything to say?”
That was right.
Today, Camille came to the prison to see Brody.
Under normal circumstances, it would be impossible to see him. However, due to Ayan’s influence, they allowed Camille to meet Brody this time.
After all, Camille’s relationship with Ayan in Hance City wasn’t much of a secret. Camille’s appearance wasn’t much of a secret either. Moreover, given their relationship, the prison guards made some exceptions for Camille.
Brody’s relationship with Camille became even more distant since Page passed away. So under these circumstances, Brody’s willingness to see Camille surprised her.
At her question, Brody froze for a moment before his expression showed some surprise. He asked calmly, “Did Ayan tell you?”
Camille frowned. For a moment, she didn’t understand his meaning but quickly caught on after a few seconds of delay before speaking up again, “Whether he told me or not doesn’t matter. After all these years, I’ve always had doubts. It’s just that it hasn’t been confirmed.”
She snorted lightly. Coldness flickered in her eyes as memories from the past resurfaced.
Recalling those memories wasn’t difficult at all.
Camille’s days in the Armstrong family weren’t easy. Brody was indifferent towards her. Although he wasn’t too strict, most of the time, he treated her as if she were dispensable-an unnecessary existence. What Camille couldn’t understand was that a normal father-daughter relationship, even if it wasn’t particularly close, still had some level of connection. No father should be so cold towards his own daughter.
However, Camille couldn’t feel even a trace of paternal love from Brody.
Page interacted with her quite often, but those were memories that Camille didn’t want to recall at all, so when Page passed away, Camille didn’t feel even the slightest bit sad-only indifference remained within her heart back then. She even found herself self-deprecating for having such a reaction, thinking of herself as a heartless and ungrateful person.
Ayan had comforted her for quite a while back then, and now, reflecting on it, she realized that she wasn’t truly heartless after all.
After all, if they showed her no affection, how could she be blamed for lacking in feelings?
