They entered the room one after the other, ensuring no one saw them.
Nelson stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his shirt already off. A long scar snaked across his broad shoulders, bleeding and seemingly reaching the bone.
A doctor soon came in and examined Nelson carefully, his expression grim. “Mr. Oconnor, have you been injured in this same spot before?”
Callie gazed at him calmly and heard him respond with a simple “yes.”
“It might be serious. After a basic treatment, you should go to the hospital for an X-ray as soon as possible.”
Nelson neither agreed nor disagreed. “Just apply the medicine first.”
The doctor took out a bunch of medications. Callie couldn’t wait any longer. “I’ll do it. You can leave now.”
The doctor hesitated but nodded and left after seeing Nelson’s expression.
In the spacious hotel room, only the two of them remained. Callie moved behind him and gently applied the medicine to his wound.
“Those were Owen’s men. Owen has set his sights on me and might cause you trouble,” she said quickly.
The man’s chest was exposed, looking particularly alluring in the mirror. He stared at the woman working carefully. “Why would he trouble me? We are already divorced.”
The word reminded Callie, and her hand shook slightly, spilling more medicine. Nelson frowned slightly.
“You saved me, so naturally, they will trouble you,” Callie said with a faint smile. “They might even suspect you still have feelings for me.”
Nelson was uninterested and didn’t appreciate the joke.
Callie’s smile faded too, a hint of mockery in her eyes.
“Did those men say anything when they came?”
After applying the medicine, Callie bandaged his wound. “They said that after I left, Owen went to great lengths to find me and probably took it out on Jaquan. He nearly lost his life.”
That was the only useful information.
Nelson’s expression froze slightly upon hearing the name. He closed his eyes. “The person in the photo is Jaquan.”
Callie no longer tried to hide it. “When I saw him that day, he was indeed covered in injuries and had taken drugs. He was in no condition to have sex with me.”
Nelson opened his eyes. “Who took the photo?”
“… I don’t know.” Back to the original question.
“Owen…” Nelson muttered the name thoughtfully. “He let you go. Why didn’t Owen kill him?”
Callie was stunned. “Their relationship is complicated. Maybe he still has some use.”
He met her gaze through the mirror. “Jaquan was taken in by Owen at a critical moment but ended up betraying him fatally. If I were Owen, I wouldn’t leave him alive.”
His words were sharp, like a knife raised and lowered, making Callie slightly tremble.
“Keeping him alive for further use? For what?” She finished bandaging him. “You suspect Owen, but this doesn’t benefit him.”
“The lack of benefit is the biggest suspicion.” Nelson put on a new shirt without buttoning it. “If something happened to you, who would be the biggest victim?”
Callie frowned. “Besides me… it would be you.”
It was aimed at Nelson!
Everyone knew that Nelson treated Mrs. Oconnor exceptionally well; she was his weakness.
This move hit right at the sore spot.
A deep chill emerged in Nelson’s eyes as he suddenly asked, “Did Jaquan ever try to break through a checkpoint with you?”
He was referring to an incident at the Anbusea highway entrance.
“… Yes, but we didn’t succeed.”
He chuckled lightly, lost in thought. “Indeed, you’ve been through life and death together.”
