“Aren’t you going to move away from the door. One would swear that you are afraid of me.”He said when he saw that she showed no sign of moving.
“I wish I was maybe I wouldn’t feel the way that I feel right now. Thank Maria for me would you.”She said walking over to the balcony praying that he would leave, her thought was short lived when she felt his presence behind her only a few feet away. It was a cool night and if things had been okay between them she would’ve turned and went straight into his arms just to feel the security that she always feels there. A beautiful cool night.
“How are you feeling now?”He asked her.
“It’s not like you give a damn!”She spat at him.”We all know you just care about the baby.”She could feel that he’s keeping his anger in check but she didn’t care, she’s the one that’s suppose to be angry he has no right.
“Don’t say such things. I care about what happens to you despite of what you may think at this moment the baby isn’t the only thing that I’m concerned about. Your life is also important.”
“I beg to differ.”She said under her breath.”What are you still doing in here, aren’t you going to go and have dinner.”
He moved closer to her and she could feel he’s right next to her, if she can turn around their faces will only be inches apart. His arms came around her and she froze, it feels like forever since the last time when she was in his arms even though he had held her this morning. He’s warm and she so badly wanted to lean in him if he kept on holding her like this then she’ll eventually give in and let her mind and body over rule her heart.
“Just go Nicolas.”She begged.”Please… I beg of you, let me go.” She’s fighting with her inner self.
“What if I don’t want to. What if I wanna be with you tonight… are you still going to ask me to leave.”Her power to resist him is fading slowly, she had vowed that she won’t fall weak and that she’ll fight him, but Nico just has a way of weakening her defenses. Her mind and body is overruling her, her heart is telling her to move away but her feet refuse to listen. She has swept her hair to one side of her face leaving her neck exposed and when she felt his breath on her skin when he spoke it made her whole body shiver with need.
“I know you’re still angry at me and you have every right to be, but don’t push me away tonight. I’m staying regardless of what you’re going to say.”He lightly kissed her exposed flesh on her neck.
“That’s not asking nice.”She whispered.
“I wasn’t. Now come on you need to eat your dinner.”He turned her and put his arm around her before leading her to the bed, where he let her sit down and eat.
“Are you just going to sit there and watch me eat.”
“I can always feed you.”He offered.
That’s the last thing she wanted although she wouldn’t mind if he did.”No thank you.”She said instead. It was chicken soup with double cornbread, smoked mozzarella and sundried tomatoes on the side was spinach salad with warm brown butter dressing. Half way through the meal she said.
“It’s delicious, Maria sure knows her stuff.”
“Mom prepared it. She wanted to make something nice for you.”
“Your mom is an amazing woman.”She said.”She’s been nothing but good to me I don’t know how I’ll ever repay her.”
“I know how you can.”She said from the door and both of them turned around. Nico immediately got up.
“Mother.”He said.”What are you doing here?”
“Now I’m not allowed to see my daughter in law.”She told him.
“That’s not what I meant.”
She walked further into the room.”How was my cooking I hope you and the little one enjoyed it.”
Reina smiled.”It was delicious Mrs Garcia. Thank you.”
“You know what you can do for me. How about you call me mom.”
Reina didn’t know what to say at that gesture.”I-..”She began.
“Don’t over think it, from now on I expect you to call me mom and that’s final. Do I make myself clear.”
Reina nodded and got up to hug her.”Thank you…. for everything.”
“Thank you for changing my stubborn son. Just a pity he’s in denial but don’t worry he’ll realise it… soon. Now get some rest She kissed Reina on the cheeks and then she went over to Nico and kissed him too before leaving. Reina could only wish that she can change a man like him only in her dreams can she pretend that all is well between them and that they’ll be a happy family soon enough.
“It must’ve been a privilege to be raised by your mom, you guys as a family must’ve been fun. I know your mom, what kind of a man was your father.”
“You need to get rest.”He said flatly.”I’ll take your tray downstairs.”
“Why do you always avoid talking about your past and family, especially when I ask about your dad… you… you just shut down.”
“What right do you have to question me. I don’t answer to anyone.”
“I’m in love and married to a man I practically know nothing of, how dumb am I.”She went to go lay down.
“Why are you so interested about my past.”
“Because I wanna know who you are as a person, where you come from. I wanna know all the stupid things like what you did when you were in high school, how many girlfriends you had, what your favourite food is, or how your life was like when you were growing up or what your favourite colour is. I wanna know all those small little things that seem irrelevant for you, I want to know it all so that one day when our baby will ask I’ll be able to tell them what kind of a man their father was. What’s so wrong in wanting to get to know you.”
For a long time he didn’t say anything they both just stared at one another. It’s like staring into a cold dark room that is empty inside, he seemed lost, broken for some reason it’s as if he’s entering into another place. Her heart ached for him cause she can see the pain and hurt he’s hiding deep inside, somewhere within he’s a good man she has seen that.”Some things are meant to be left alone. Can I get you anything else.”
“Will you be able to give what I want.”
