Cara’s POV
Miss my timing, my foot!
There was no way I was letting him leave without telling him.
Adonis jumped to his feet immediately.
“Get up, baby! We’re going back.”
“But I have something to say. You’ve not heard me out!” I argued.
“Cara, there might be a coup at the mansion. We need to get back immediately. Leave the food. I’ll get someone to pack it up later.”
He stalked back to the shrubs.
“Where are you going? Listen to me!”
I watched him disappear before my eyes and followed after him.
“Adonis,” I called cautiously. “Where are you? If this is a joke, it is no longer funny.”
I heard nothing in reply.
Did he abandon me here?
“Adonis! Where are you? Adonis, come out here right now,” I demanded, and the next thing I heard was an engine roaring to life.
I screamed, stumbling back as I fell on my butt.
They say be careful what you wish for.
The noise increased as Adonis drove towards me on a badass motorbike.
“Climb.” He yelled above the noise.
“You have a motorbike?” I shook my head. “No. You parked your motorbike here?” I responded with equal vigour.
“I was going to make sure you couldn’t walk home after the date, so I need a way to transport you.” He replied with a smug look.
I couldn’t stop the smile on my face.
My God. We were in a dire situation-I was in a dilemma, yet he was making me smile.
“Come on.” He shouted and I mounted the back.
In less than ten minutes, we were back at the mansion, and Luca was waiting for him at the door. The men were running around, and everywhere seemed chaotic.
“Adonis. Thank God you’re finally here. I’ve organized the weapons and strategies according to the plan. All men are fully armed and in position.”
Adonis nodded. “Thank you, brother. Let’s do this once and for all.”
“You need to hear me out, Adonis.” I puffed as I got to him. Short legs wasn’t it.
He groaned. “Bel, let’s talk about this later. The Grecos would be here any minute.”
“Cara, this is serious. Luca chimed in, and I put my hands on my hips, squinting my eyes at him.
“I want to talk to my husband! Shoo!” Then I turned to Adonis, “You listen to me.”
He eyed me with desire.
“I would’ve taken you straight to bed if it wasn’t for the circumstances.” He mused and sent Luca away.
But fate was against me. At that very moment, a truck drove up the driveway. Adonis stiffened.
“Get inside Cara.”
“No!”
His hard gaze fell on me.
“Did you just defile me? This is not a joke. Get inside! You!” He pointed to one of the guards. “Take her away.”
Then I was being pulled away from him. I struggled to free myself, but I guess my training was nothing compared to the men who had been training their whole lives.
“Adonis Listen to me. Adonis, I’m sorry. I was working with the Grecos. I gave them information about you, but it wasn’t harmful. That was before I began to like you,” I shouted into the air, and for a moment, the man holding stopped at the words I spewed, but I didn’t care.
The man whose opinion I cared about was the one I was being dragged away from. He turned and fixed me with a cold look. I had to second guess if he was the same man cracking jokes with me some minutes ago.
“Take her away.” He commanded. “We’ll talk about this later.
I knew that the last part wasn’t directed to the guard.
*****
I was stuck on the third floor, pacing about and I was losing my mind.
What’s going on? What can’t I hear a thing? I’ve tried peeking out through the window, but they weren’t in my line of view.
I nervously chewed at my nails.
My body shuddered involuntarily at the last look Adonis gave me.
The fact that he wanted me protected meant he still cared for me, right?
Or he wants to kill you himself, my subconscious piped up.
I ruined it all, didn’t I? At least he heard it from me. That was all that mattered.
But I couldn’t just stay in here and do nothing. I wanted to get out! I knew what was going on down there, but the guards at the elevator wouldn’t even let me leave the room.
There must be something. Something I can do.
An idea struck my mind and then,
I screamed.
They rushed in to find me rolling on the floor clutching my stomach.
“I need my drug. It’s in the kitchen, but you won’t know where it is.” My face scrunched in pretence.
The men worriedly glanced at one another. Caught between not letting me out of the room and saving me. Both options were under their boss’s instruction to protect me.
Deciding it was better to let me out so I could live than to lock me up and have me dead, three men formed a circle around me, and the last one assisted me as we headed to the kitchen.
All that remained was to divert their attention so I could run out, but I didn’t have to do anything. Because the sound of a gun being fired echoed through the room.
With wide eyes and parted lips, our eyes connected, and we all had one question in mind.
Who just got shot?
