Edith’s POV
I woke up feeling sore everywhere and thirsty.
I blinked a few times before calming down and looking to my left side.
Talic was sleeping on a comfy chair, leaning his head against the edge of the bed. The room I was in was the very room he had given me, and that made me feel relieved. The spell had worked perfectly; I was so sure about it because I was still alive.
I slowly sat upright and looked at him with a smile.
It must have been horrifying for him to watch me take red Otis and lose my life right after that. But how did he know that the spell was complete? Did he cry a lot for me? Just that thought made me want to comfort him.
I moved my hand and brushed his hair softly as the beautiful tingles spread throughout my body.
No, I had to distance myself to make it easier for the rejection. Although my heart was getting in my way, my mind was still telling me otherwise. I needed to escape before he could talk me into staying.
He shifted a bit and groaned softly. When he blinked a few times and opened his sleepy eyes, I felt my heart pick up and beat rapidly. I hated to admit it, but he was perfect the way he was. I hated his past so much because of what he had told me, yet I couldn’t help myself but want to accept what he was offering me.
“Edith,” he called softly when he looked up.
“Yes, I’m back,” I answered in a low tone.
He quickly moved forward on the bed and hugged me in his embrace tightly with a heavy sigh.
“Talic, I’m okay and alive,” I said honestly.
“To hell with that, even though it’s a relief. I was worried sick about you, and I almost killed the healer who stood in my way of getting to you. To be honest, I never ever want to go through that in my whole damn life again. Please let this be the last time you attempt to resurrect the dead,” he said loudly.
I smiled and then hugged him back.
“I will do my best to make it the last time, so please don’t panic or feel bad over what happened,” I answered and then pulled back.
No one in their right mind wanted to live forever, unless those greedy or selfish who wanted to have it all. I was immortal, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t die.
When using the resurrection spell and incantation, one had to be very careful. Any mistake resulted in instant death, be it immortal or not. The price of learning the dark spells back then was my family; this time, I was careful because I knew if I were to continue, another price would be needed.
He moved his hand to my cheek and smiled sadly.
I knew there was nothing I could do to make it better for him, yet I was ready to at least make him feel a little relieved.
I leaned in and kissed his cheek lightly.
He frowned in surprise when I pulled back and sighed softly.
“Fine, I guess I’ll have to believe you,” he whispered as he went back to sit on his chair.
“Yes, please do,” I answered and then moved to get on his lap as he widened his eyes in shock but did nothing to stop me.
He reluctantly welcomed me into his embrace and leaned against the back, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me closer.
I closed my eyes, enjoying his warmth.
I didn’t want to break the silence yet I had to say it.
“Is Lillian awake?” I asked.
“I don’t know, and I don’t care about her, Edith. To me, what mattered the most was you. I stayed by your side and made sure not to leave you, even if it was for a second. It may sound clingy, but you are all I have right now,” he answered as I sadly swallowed hard.
His human was trash, and he kept forgetting that. Just because he acted like his world revolved around me, it didn’t mean it did to Harvey.
“Thank you, but we need to see if Lillian is awake,” I said and then moved back on the bed.
He frowned deeply, then stood up and extended his hand towards me.
I moved and grabbed it, getting to my feet.
“Talic, there is something I want to tell you,” I said seriously.
He looked at me and then nodded.
“When I crossed the line of death, I did find Lillian, but she wasn’t as you said. The Luna I found was very different. The first time in life I was scared to face her because she gave off this deadly aura. She was very dominant and intimidating. Her very being was telling me to back down or get killed,” I said honestly.
He smirked and then leaned in and kissed my forehead.
“You have had it rough, Edith. Lillian is not like that, and never in a million years had she ever intimidated anyone,” he answered when he had pulled back.
“Talic, you don’t understand, she’s not an omega no matter how I look at it!” I exclaimed.
“It doesn’t matter, Edith. What matters is seeing the Alpha on his feet,” he answered, making me feel annoyed.
His loyalty was towards his Alpha, yet here I was trying to convince him how Lillian was dangerous.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that I was worried about you,” I muttered.
“I know, but no matter what happens, everything will work out well if the Alpha gets back on his feet,” he answered and then began walking as I followed.
How was I not putting up a fight or trying so hard to convince him how Lillian would target him? She wouldn’t kill him, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t make him do something against his will.
Why was it so hard to just tell him she was an Alpha? Was it because I felt guilty doing that on behalf of Lillian? She was the only one with the right to do that. If she didn’t want anyone to know, I would be hurting her.
When we reached the bedroom where Luna and the Alpha were, we waited for a second outside, then walked in.
Both Lillian and the Alpha were still lying unconscious side by side, and the healer was standing close to them with a concerned expression.
“How is everything?” Talic asked when he approached her.
“The Alpha seems to be stable for now, but the Luna is still dead,” she answered as she glared at me.
“That’s because it will take some time for her to come back. It may not be believable, but my spells are always spot on and effective,” I said, then glanced at the clear floor where the magic circle was drawn.
I was about to say something when I heard a loud sigh. I quickly looked at Lillian, who was breathing softly.
“Luna!” The healer exclaimed and quickly went to her side, kneeling down and grabbing her hand.
Lillian blinked a few times, then opened her eyes. Everyone was tense in the room, and I too felt uncomfortable because her aura was that of death.
Talic quickly went to his knees without a word and bared his neck as the healer did the same.
It was very clear to them that Edith was a female Alpha that was way beyond their rank and status.
I smiled and kept myself in check as she slowly sat upright and looked at the Alpha who was lying next to her.
She looked at me, then rolled her eyes and stood up.
“Prepare a few she-wolves to tend to me, that’s an order,” she said, and without wasting time, the healer rushed out.
I could feel it, how everything was going to change for the worst.
